A Sip of Rio

Liam Young has a problem – he’s booked a romantic holiday to Rio de Janeiro months ago, but when he breaks up with his boyfriend, all his plans fall apart. Not only is his dream holiday slipping through his fingers, but Liam is sick and tired of getting his heart broken.

Blaine Reed has a solution that can save Liam’s plans. Recently divorced, Blaine needs a break, and a couple of stress-free weeks in Rio with a sexy guy like Liam sounds like heaven.

Liam and Blaine hit it off right from the start, becoming good friends even before they’ve left London. Despite their efforts to ignore the simmering attraction between them, it boils over when they end up sharing a room in one of the most romantic cities in the world.

Being together in Rio is easy, and it’s exactly what Liam needs – no feelings, no drama, nobody getting hurt.

Until someone does.

When the holiday bubble bursts, it’s up to them to find a way to be together outside of Rio’s seductive magic.

My biggest inspiration for A Sip of Rio is Rio de Janeiro itself.

I first visited Rio 2 years ago when I got invited by my Brazilian publisher for the release of my first book in Portuguese. I was shattered after the eleven hour flight, and yet I was caught in Rio’s magical presence from the very first step I took outside of the airport. I can’t even try to explain it. I guess it’s something that needs to be experienced in person.

I tried to capture that first awe inspiring cab ride from the airport to the hotel in A Sip of Rio, when Liam is looking through the cab’s window, his body tired, but his eyes big with wonder. That was me. I could barely keep my eyes open during the passport control, but once we started driving through Rio I was wide-eyed with excitement even though it was night.

Or maybe because it was night. The lights from the favelas twinkling on the hills all around the city as if overflowing stars from the sky; the imposing presence of Christ the Redeemer watching over Rio, the statue visible from every corner of the city.

It was an entirely different world and it was pulling me in, luring me to get to know it better.

And so I did. I spent the next 2 weeks exploring the city, from the usual touristy sightseeing tours of Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf, where I spent my time split between admiring the views and battling my fear of heights much like Blaine, to fulfilling a life-long dream of seeing a football match at Maracana and hanging out with people who quickly became good friends.

That’s the thing about Rio – everyone is welcome there. People I’d only messaged on Facebook a few times not only welcome me in their group, but made me feel as if I belonged there. I’d never been hugged so much in my entire life.

I knew I was going to write a book set in Rio the very first day I arrived. Even before I set foot on the silky sands of Copacabana and Ipanema; even before I saw the bombeiros (that’s firefighters for us English speakers, but doesn’t bombeiros have a much cuter ring to it?) running on the beach shirtless every morning at 7am; even before I ate some of the most delicious food I’d ever tasted.

Even before I fell in love with Rio.

I miss it every single day and can’t wait to go back. And maybe write a few more books about it.

Liam stirred next to him, turning gingerly and moving to snuggle in Blaine’s arms. Laying his head on Blaine’s chest, and wrapping an arm around his waist, Liam made a content little noise, his breathing slowing down almost immediately.

Blaine smiled as he looked down at Liam, calm and relaxed, seeking comfort in Blaine’s arms. His stomach did a little flip at the thought of Liam seeing him as something more than a holiday fling, but not being ready to admit so yet. They still had a few more days left here, maybe Blaine could make him see that what they had didn’t have to end when they got on the plane. He had this crazy idea taking root in his mind about how they could make this last, and how they could make Liam’s dreams come true.

But it was scary to voice it out, and even scarier thinking about Liam’s reaction. What if he laughed in his face and dismissed it as nothing more than a fantasy?

Blaine sighed, kissing the top of Liam’s head as he fiddled with his phone one handed, activating the camera app. He snapped a photo of them, Blaine looking up at the camera while Liam slept peacefully in his arms.

On an impulse, he sent the photo to Hayden, adding underneath,

I think I’m in trouble

He put a blushing emoticon at the end of the sentence, not that Hayden needed that clarification. He’d get what kind of trouble Blaine meant just by looking at the picture. Even to Blaine’s eyes it looked intimate, raw, and way too intense to post on social media.

Hayden replied with a meme of a guy who had pink paper hearts stuck on top of his eyes, with the caption: ‘Heart eyes, motherfucker’.

This is you right now ^^^

Blaine laughed quietly, shaking his head. He texted back, clutching his phone tightly and eagerly awaiting Hayden’s response.

What am I going to do?

Keep him.

Was it really that easy?

About Teodora!

Hi, my name is Teodora and I live in London with my husband and my son. I’ve been writing ever since I can remember, but it became my full time job in 2010 when I decided that everything else I’ve tried bores me to death and I have to do what I’ve always wanted to do, but never had to guts to fully embrace. I’ve been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and an interior designer among other things, but as soon as the novelty of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing. Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It’s the only time that I’m truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten minutes at a time – my son has a bigger attention span than me.

When I’m procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Nintendo Wii game by a very inventive kid
