Agate: Then and Now

(Stones of Power 04)
by

M.D. Grimm

Time travel. For mages, it violates their number one rule: what the Mother has written, let no one unwrite. The Mother writes the destinies of the creatures on the world of Karishian. If her writings were undone, it is feared that Creation itself could be undone. The Dark Mage Morgorth takes this rule to heart, but there are others who do not.

Morgorth is about to claim a stone of power when it is stolen from him by a female mage he hasn’t seen in decades. As they struggle for the stone, she activates it, and Morgorth is unwillingly plunged into another time and another place. It isn’t long before he realizes what time he’s found himself in and there are a few familiar faces.

Most notable is a much younger version of Aishe. His mate.

Living with a tribe who will be massacred, caring for a young lad who will become his mate, and fighting a battle against a mage who can travel from past to future at a whim; Morgorth’s life has never been easy but now he must contend with the will of the Mother. Unable to change the future and the tragedies of Aishe’s life, he must decide what his role in his mate’s past will be, and ask himself one vital question: how does one defeat time?

Excerpt

Even as I felt the air around her began to tremble and heat, I only had a split second to make a decision. I lunged forward, trying to grab the stone again. She jerked her arm away but I managed to grab her wrist just as she activated the stone’s power. I didn’t have time to change my mind as a silver dome formed around Drasyln, as the stone seemed to open a vortex with a gravity I couldn’t fight. I was being suffocated, compressed on all sides. My breath left my lungs, my muscles seized and wept. My last thoughts were of Aishe, and if I would ever see him again.

In my efforts to prevent this exact event, I realized I’d just broken the cardinal rule of a mage. The Number One rule my mentor Master Ulezander had ever taught me.

What the Mother has written, let no one unwrite.

Atcoatlu was an agate. It was the stone of time.

Review: This story is part of a series and must be read in order to enjoy the full storyline.

When a new Stone of Power is discovered Morgorth is notified but just as he is about to claim it it’s stolen by a female mage, Drasyln, a mage he knows well from years past. As they struggle for the powerful stone the mage activates it and they are both plunged into the past. Morgorth finds himself stranded in a time he isn’t supposed to be in but maybe the Mother knows better when he stumbles across a much younger version of his mate Aishe.

Staying with a tribe you know will be massacred and getting to know his future mate has Morgorth conflicted, does he confess all he knows and change the future or leave it well enough alone? He also has to save the tribe from the current threat of Drasyln and her desire to get her hands on the dangerous Ruby they protect, but how does one beat time?

This is a fantastic addition to the Stones of Power series, some of the questions we were left with from the previous books are answered and it’s amazing to see how far reaching the authors story arc is. This story is from Morgorth’s POV so we see everything through his eyes again, we find out that he is actually afraid to confess the extent of his dark past to Aishe but he gets side-tracked from his confession by the discovery of a Stone of Power. When he gets dragged to the past he discovers that Aishe kept a secret from him.

Morgorth and Aishe are just as we remember them, Morgorth living his life how he wants to while trying to ignore the damning prediction that he will be a Destroyer, only Aishe is safe from his wrath. Aishe is still the strong warrior who helps to mitigate some of Morgorth’s instant wrath but can be just as fierce when protecting Morgorth’s interests. They make a fantastic couple and are perfectly suited to each other. But it was fantastic to see the young Aishe before he became the great warrior, he was just so cute.

The storyline is brilliant with Morgorth being shown to be human as he is plagued by his conscience, the way that he so wanted to say something so he could change Aishe’s future loss but unable to because it would change the future really does tear him up. I thought the way it was written was perfect, the way that we see Morgorth’s slightly vulnerable side and later Aishe’s compassion and understanding.

The action in this story is again wonderful, it is perfectly written so it’s just enough without being over the top. We have fights and slight battles between a power hungry mage and Morgorth and Aishe’s tribe, it’s very good without it being unbelievable. We find out more of Morgorth’s past when he confesses all to Aishe so we discover more of this complex character.

I recommend this to those who love fantasy, brilliant mages, incredible warriors, a fascinating storyline, a love that stands through times and troubles and hints to what they face in the future.
