Review: This book is part of a series and must be read in order. Raven and Tanis’s fledgling relationship hits its first hurdle when Raven travels to Tanis’s home, Tanis’s past conquests are brought to the fore and though Raven can accept his past Tanis struggles with his demons. Aiyan and Kaden’s relationship is going from strength to strength and they support their family and friends as more revelations are brought to light. Aiya and Sawyer’s relationship thrives even though they have to keep their forbidden love secret, but a revelation reveals an evil that has lurked for years in the House Gaeland. As Cillian tries to gain new support in the Outkasts to bring down the House Gaeland and to make his family pay, his family are facing secrets that will rock the truth they have always believed.

T.M. Smith brings us back to the dystopian world where being gay is the norm and being straight has you cast out, as we join the family of House Gaeland again secrets and lies are uncovered, relationships strained and sacrifices made. We join all the happy couples as they sail to their new family’s homes: Aiyan and Kaden travel to Kaden’s family home while Aiya, Sawyer, Maeve, Tanis and Raven travel to Tanis and Maeve’s home, the story switches between the couples as they each deal with their relationships and what they have to face.

This is a great story where we see the storyline develop more, the underlying thread involving Cillian is expanded upon and new developments are revealed that are quite shocking, these new revelations make you wonder what will happen next as the family reel from the shocking news. While that storyline grows throughout the story we also have the plot involving Aiya and Sawyer, it makes me wonder just how they will overcome the opposition that they are bound to face. Tanis and Raven’s relationship has a bit of a bump as Tanis faces his past encroaching on their present but Raven is made of sterner stuff. There is wonderful lovemaking between the couples and plenty of it, so full warning to those (like me) whose eye’s bleed at girly bits there is mf sex! But there was lots of yummy male on male bits as well 🙂

Newcomers to this series are strongly advised to read Opposites first as all the world building and introductions to the characters are done in that first story, you will be lost if you jump straight into this one. Now while I admit to thoroughly enjoying this story especially as the plot thickens there was one thing that kept popping in my mind… the mapping test and Aiya: Cillian failed the mapping test and was exiled to the Outkasts within hours of his birth but Aiya who is obviously straight is still with her family, it has left me with questions such as; didn’t they do the test on her? Was the test result, if she had one, wrong? I can’t wait to see if those questions will be answered.

I recommend this to those who love dystopian worlds, fantastic characters, secrets emerging, evil showing its face, love overcoming the past, hot steamy sex and a stunning ending that leaves you hanging in suspense.

A Labor of Love

Happy Labor day everyone, and thanks for stopping by MM Good Book Reviews today for their stop on my Appearances blog tour.

We all love a good love story, so I thought I’d share a little insight into the main love story in Appearances, Raven and Tanis. These two really have taken on a life of their own and become fan favorites. In Opposites we saw them meet and fall in love. We saw how Raven fought his feelings until Tanis forced him to face them, and then asked Raven to spend the rest of his life with him. So this is where the ‘Happy Ever After’ reel should roll, right? Not so much. I wanted to show something different in this relationship than what I wrote with many of the other characters and their stories.

Raven and Tanis are very different people with different lifestyles and morals. They want nothing more than to just love each other, but they are going to have to work at it. It was a bit of a challenge for me as a writer to spin a tale for them that had some drama and angst in it. I wanted to show that even though Tanis is this larger than life personality, this warrior that is defined by his strength, that he still had a weakness. When doubt creeps in, how will Raven handle it when he had to face uncertainty from the start?

Between surgery on my wrists over the summer, and trying to wrap my brain around exactly how to convey this journey I wanted these two people to go on to my readers, the story was a little slow to start. But once I figured out what direction I wanted to take with them, the words just poured out of me. What I hope I’ve done, and continue to do, is show that both men are strong but vulnerable. Their story truly is a labor of love for me.

A lot of sleepless nights, blood, sweat and tears have gone into this book. And I hope you all love it as much as I do!
