Battle Stations

(Alliances 02)
by

Chris T. Kat

The fight to eradicate the Tash’Ba breeding stations continues, with spunky Commander Berit Turner and his Nadisc mate, Tom, in the thick of things. Sometimes it seems as though they’ll never locate and destroy them all. And there’s always the fear that the Tash’Ba have something else, something worse—if that’s even possible—lurking ahead.

As if things aren’t bad enough, Berit’s less than stellar past is threatening to bite him in the ass, and they’ve received alarming new information. The Tash’Ba Queen needs to use Earth as a place to hatch the egg of her successor. And if what she says is true, the new Queen will be even more voracious and cruel than her predecessor.

Berit, along with his team—Tom, Carson, Niyara, and Fleur—must do everything in their power to stop her. If they fail, Earth will be lost forever.

Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Chris T. Kat author of Battle Stations (Alliances, Book 2).

Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than any others? Love? Action? Romance? Tragedy?

I love writing romances, and I also love writing action scenes, which is why I had a blast writing the Alliances series. I was able to combine action scenes with a growing love story.

As much as I like to write explicit sex scenes, I need to be in the right mood for those. If I can’t feel the desire between the guys, I just shut my laptop and try again a day later.

Scenes in which one of the main characters is hurt are the hardest for me to write. They’re emotionally distressing and take a big toll on me, so I try to avoid them. I’m all for the fluff and cuteness! 🙂

What do you think makes a good story?

A good story for me includes characters I care about, as well as a realistic plot and realistic relationships. I need to feel the emotions of the characters, really get in their head. When they’re excited, I need to feel their excitement, not just read about it. When they’re scared, I need to read faster, and feel my heart thumping because I want the character to survive or get out of a tight situation unharmed.

Make me feel and I’m sold on the story. That’s what I try to do when I write my own stories as well, though it’s harder to do than to say.

Do you hear from readers much? What do they say?

No, I don’t hear from readers much. When I hear from them, it’s when one of my stories touched them. From what I’ve gathered, they like the realism of the relationships, and the guys’ often humorous conversations.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

Battle Stations is my 18th published work. Over the next months, I’ll publish two more books. For a while, I’ve been rather prolific but this is changing. Not because I don’t have ideas, but because my time is so limited that when I have some free time, I spend it with my family or read instead of writing.

My favorite book… that’s a tough decision. Usually the one I’ve just finished is my favorite book, so it’s hard for me to say which one is my all- time favorite. Silver Lining comes to mind because that was a very emotional and taxing book to write. My last novella, Despite the Odds, was a wonderful book to write because of the main characters. But I guess the two Alliances books, Breeding Stations and Battle Stations, are my current favorites. I’ve wanted to write a science fiction story with lots of suspenseful / adventurous scenes for a long time, but never thought I could pull it off. As soon as I started listening to Berit, the story flowed, and I could barely keep up with typing. I love those kinds of stories!

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

That depends on the season. When the weather is good, I like to be outdoors and putter around in the garden, go hiking, or ride the bike. I’m also a big cross stitch fanatic, so I do a little bit of that almost every day. I also enjoy crocheting, or whatever craft piques my interest. My main hobby, however, will always remain reading. Depending on my work load, I read one to five books per week. 🙂

I’ve written a flash fiction story (“Survival”) that features Berit and Tom. The story is set between Breeding Stations and Battle Stations and you can read it at the DsP blog: http://dreamspinnerpress.com/blog/2015/10/15/bugs-hisses-free-fiction-survival-chris-t-kat/

Excerpt

Veering to the left, I allowed myself a quick glance over my shoulder. Not that I saw any chance of the elgoth having lost interest in me, because those fucking beasts never lost interest once they’d set their sights on prey, but sometimes a new prey might attract them more, which I’d have welcomed right then.

My lungs burned and my leg muscles smarted like hell from running like a rabbit through thick brushes and overgrown ferns. I even zigzagged around. Too bad I couldn’t find a rabbit’s hole to hide in.

I had no idea where Tom, Carson, and the rest of the team were, either.

We’d been separated before—it happened when gigantic Tash’Ba war beasts decided we looked good enough to eat—but I’ve never liked it. No, scratch that. Every time it happened, it put the fear of God in me. A gust of warm breath, mingled with some spittle, sprayed my neck. I squeaked and swerved to the right, vaulting over a stunted tree trunk. Seconds later, wood splinters sped past my head, and I lost my footing on the vibrating ground.

I sprawled facedown in the mud, panic sending bolts of confusing messages through my body. Maybe… maybe if I kept completely still, the elgoth wouldn’t touch me? The first time I’d made the acquaintance of one of these towering forty-foot-tall creatures, Tom had instructed me not to move, because they wouldn’t be able to locate us.

It had worked on Ligador and a couple of other breeding stations, but last time a team member tried this approach, the elgoth had roared and ripped him apart. All Tash’Ba war beasts seemed to be altering their tactics, making them even more unpredictable than before.

The mud around me sloshed, almost causing me to inhale some of it. I suppressed the urge to cough and kept my mouth shut as tight as I’d ever done, even though a whimper threatened to spill over my lips any second.

Another gust of foul breath struck my neck. My hair stood on end, my muscles locked in some kind of rigid stupor. That was it. I’d end my life as a morsel for an elgoth.

A blast echoed from the south, and the beast’s breath vanished from my neck. Gunfire followed the blast, and voices filtered through my terrified haze. They’d run right into the elgoth if I didn’t warn them. But… if I moved, or raised my voice, the elgoth would bite my head off. Literally.

Review: Well this was another rollercoaster ride from start to finish. Smartass Berit, his mate Tom, and best friend Carson with his mate Niyara, are still fighting to destroy the breeding stations of the Tash’Ba queen. Each one seems to be getting worse than the last one as the beast seem to be changing and becoming more vicious and cunning.

This time more is revealed as they learn the Queen is heading to Earth and her plans for it. Also traitors are among the humans.
This was so fast paced. I was just turning the pages to find out what would happen next. I was engrossed from start to finish seeing what more was in store for Berit and his mate and friends. And plus to see what next off the wall comment Berit would say.

Berit really is a favorite character of mine. He is so over the top at times and really cannot keep his mouth shut. Berit also does not see himself as strong or really all that brave. But his biggest strength is that he keeps doing it and keeps fighting.

Tom and Berit’s relationship has grown some too. Berit still is not completely comfortable with everything. But he is also making an effort to learn. He is willing to give Tom things he needs. Berit understands that the Nadisc are protective and possessive of their mates. Sometimes Tom needs reassurances too and maybe just to be asked if something Berit is about to do is OK. And yes there is more tail sex, which is still surprisingly hot.

I felt this book tied things up nicely on one hand, but also left enough unanswered questions about Berit and other situations that I see at least another book being needed. Or at least I want more.

I truly enjoy the interactions of these characters and the world the author has created. I want to know more about how Berit and Tom’s relationship progresses and how the other relationship of his friends go.
