Excerpt

Nate wanted to argue, but he couldn’t bring himself to upset Mark. He parked the car and waited for Mark to give him some idea what he wanted to do. But Mark didn’t speak. He just got out and headed towards the bar. Nate hurried after him, catching up with him at the counter as he ordered his first double whiskey. He downed it and ordered another. As he went to order his third, Nate stopped him.

“This isn’t a good idea.”

“Where were you on my wedding night?” Mark growled. He took his third drink and moved away from the bar. There were guys playing pool and a few couples sat prodding forks at piles of starchy food. Otherwise, the bar was quiet. Mark picked a secluded table away from everyone and, for a moment, Nate wasn’t even sure if he was welcome. He ordered two beers and decided to brave it.

When he placed the beer in front of Mark, Mark’s face softened. His tired eyes searched Nate’s face frantically. The man was clearly still traumatized by what had happened.

“How could he do this to me?”

“Danny doesn’t think, he just does things. Stupid things. He didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“You always defend him.”

Nate shook his head. “I don’t defend him; I just understand him.”

“I should have never married him.”

Nate couldn’t argue with that. “Why did you?”

Mark glanced away, as though he was trying to hide something. “I loved him.”

“What about now?”

Mark finished his last whiskey and looked at the empty glass with longing. “I don’t know. Can you just stop loving someone?”

Nate felt a stabbing in his chest at the turn of the conversation. This was dangerous ground—too dangerous for Nate’s liking. He took a mouthful of beer to steady his nerves.

“What do you think he’d do if I cheated on him?”
