The Witch Stone

(Court of Ash and Thorn 01)
by

Jasmine Hong

One of the unfortunate truths in life is that if someone dumps a war on your doorstep in the small hours of the morning, well, you’re kind of stuck with it. Especially if that war comes in the form of a mostly naked man and he just happens to be one of the most powerful beings in the city.

And your ex.

Another unfortunate truth: No matter how poorly things ended, you’re going to wind up scraping him up off the cement and dragging him in off your doorstep. And, of course, that’s when the real trouble begins.

Review: I have only read a couple of books by this author, and let me say that she was quite a surprise. I had not taken the chance to read the blurb of this book, so when I first started reading it, I had thought it was a m/f paranormal romance. So you can imagine my happy dance, when I turned around and grabbed the blurb for the book. I will admit that I am not a fan of the main character having previously being mated to a female. For me it just comes off a bit weird to see him go from a female to a male mate. After I realized that Rachel was in love with Sara, I actually started to like her quite a bit. She was feisty that is for sure.

Cam is the alpha wolf who had at one time been mated to a human female. His wife had been killed sometime ago, but pain like that never fades away like one would expect. He had also hidden a part of himself that he had forgotten. So you can imagine himself when he realizes a possible bonding moment with his beta, Gareth. He needs a good kick in the pants.

Gareth has been in love with his alpha for many years, but hid that part from everyone. When Cam’s wife died, he knew that Cam would forever love her and not with anyone else. That is until one sweet full moon. Now all they had to do is to fix the rest of their problems.

This story was pretty cool, but very lengthy. It just seemed that a lot of details that could have been left out to make it a good read. It didn’t keep my attention like it should have. I normally get into a book and can’t put it down, but this one did the opposite. Now like I said, I did like Rachel, but it felt like more of the book was focused on her then on our budding romance. It took away from the story itself. Also his late wife’s name was mentioned way to much to even think that it was possible for our guys to get together.

When I read a romance, I want to focus on them and the possible dangers around them. Not on other people and their desires or thoughts. Also I can’t believe Cam went from hot to cold with his lust for Gareth. It came off to fast and not really build up to it. The chemistry between the two was sweet and hot, but was not off the charts like it should have either. I will admit that while it is a very good book it is not one of those types I would read more than once. Now if the book was more about our guys then that would have probably been a bit different.

(The Rowan Harbor Cycle 03)
by

Sam Burns

Fletcher Lane wants to protect people. It was why he became a deputy. A month ago, it was why he killed a vampire who kidnapped one of his friends. Now, that death has started a cascade effect that’s tearing his life apart, leaving him possessed by magic that whispers to him in ancient Gothic.

While he’s already fighting for control of his own mind, he has to hold it together when strangers come into town looking for the dead vampire. They say they’re bounty hunters, but Fletcher knows that’s a lie. They’re the same kind of murderers who killed Fletcher’s mother. When one of them puts up a kind front, Fletcher knows that people who hunt the supernatural can’t be trusted. However nice Conner Mason seems, the worst thing Fletcher could do is fall for his act.

This is the third of nine books in The Rowan Harbor Cycle, not a standalone. It continues where the second book left off. Fletcher and Conner will return in book six to continue their story, so this book contains a HFN, not their HEA.

Blurb: Drake isn’t looking for justice. He’s not interested in doing what’s right. He’s after one thing and one thing only: revenge. That means taking down the Boredega drug cartel—and the shadowy, seemingly invincible man who heads it—even if he goes down with them.

Drake plans to destroy the cartel from within, and he uses his nightclub, Semblance, as a front for money laundering and drug trafficking. He’s sacrificed almost everything to complete his mission, and just as he’s getting close, he’s derailed by flirtatious bartender Scotty, who offers Drake a glimpse of the happiness he’s missed by pursuing a personal vendetta. Scotty might be irresistible, but Drake has come too far to turn back now. He’ll have to find a way to keep Scotty safe, fend off persistent prostitute Natasha, feed tips to the authorities, and edge his way closer to the upper echelon of the cartel, where he can finally strike. He’ll need to do it all while keeping his intentions covert—and he’s not the only one at Semblance with secrets.

Review: Drake has dedicated his life to one thing and one thing only: Revenge. The reason for wanting this revenge is heartbreaking. I really felt for Drake and the loss he still feels years after. I found him to be brave and resilient when faced with danger at every turn.

The Bordega Cartel is responsible for a lot of deaths throughout the years. Their leader who no one knows is ruthless in his business. He takes out any threats to his organisation. The manner of interrogations were horrifying.

Scotty is the easygoing bartender at Semblance, the club Drake owns. He is sweet yet tough when he needs to be. I found the love interest between Scotty and Drake to be endearing yet terrifying at the same time.

This is a fast paced story with all amounts of twists that lead to a dangerous path for the lovebirds. Danger is all around and at every turn throughout this riveting story. I read it in one sitting as I could not put it down. My favorite part was what happens at the end. It made me smile with tears in my eyes.

Highly recommended.

Blurb: The hardest thing a rebel can do isn’t standing up for something — it’s standing up for himself.

Life takes delight in stabbing Gus Scott in the back when he least expects it. After years of running from his past, present and the dismal future every social worker predicted for him, Karma delivers the one thing Gus could never—would never—turn his back on; a son from a one-night stand he’d had after a devastating break-up three years ago.

Returning to San Francisco and to 415 Ink, his family’s tattoo shop, gave him the perfect shelter to battle his personal demons and get himself together… until the firefighter who’d broken him walked back into Gus’s life.

For Rey Montenegro, tattoo artist Gus Scott was an elusive brass ring, a glittering prize he hadn’t the strength or flexibility to hold onto. Severing his relationship with the mercurial tattoo artist hurt but Gus hadn’t wanted the kind of domestic life Rey craved, leaving Rey with an aching chasm in his soul.

When Gus’s life and world starts to unravel, Rey helps him pick up the pieces, and Gus wonders if that forever Rey wants is more than just a dream.

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: From the beginning, I figured both of these men were from nasty homes. Gus more than Rey though. Rey’s father was from what I gathered an abusive asshat but had a great mom. Where as Gus’s past life was cringe worthy. The guys had saved Rey and his mother from their burning home, and then the story just jumps. They hook up, Rey ends it with Gus, Gus sleeps with a female and boom three years later he finds out he has a son.

To Gus his life was just not life worthy, he had been dumped pretty much by everyone. However the one man he loved was what hurt the most. Now there is a second chance for them both. Add in a three year old son, and things might just be changing for them all.

For the guys, they had some amazing friends. One big family I guess one would say. You learn how they all became brothers and what that means to them. For me the story was rocky and jumped around to much to not get confused by it. There was great potential but to me it was just a bit boring. It did not catch my attention like it should have and I felt bad for that. It just came off very long winded and I hate to admit it, I skimmed over several parts to it.

The flow of this story just didn’t move right. This is definitely not a fuzzy fun piece, but a serious type of story. I hate to admit it, but I did not like the story, nor the characters and had trouble just getting into it. As of right now, I do not even want to contemplate reading the rest of this series. I am sorry but his story was not for me.

Little does Max know, some shades have found a way to walk among the living as wraiths. These evil wraiths know Kody has been slated for death, and they have another, darker purpose for him.

Review: I have to say this story threw me when I started reading it as I never read the blurb. I only saw the genre so snapped it up. I was not expecting a story of a character, Kody, who attempts suicide only to be saved by Max, a reaper who died when he was sixteen. The religious aspect and those that seemed to hound Kody for his lifestyle really made me sad.

Kody’s mom just pissed me off at first when she sent him off to a camp to be cured from his gayness. His dad seemed to do whatever his mom told him. This is an emotional story of Kody, eighteen, who just wants the hurt and pain to go away. my heart went out to this young man and I kept yelling that it will get better you just have to wait it out.

I was glad Max was there for him. The other thing to the story is Max and his group of reaper friends and the supposing battle with the others in the paranormal realm. His leader Slade is vague when it comes to questions about this subject.

All in all it was an interesting and emotional read.

Review: Nineteen years ago a life was taken, a life was changed forever and another one’s soul was damaged. Micah had just been trying to be a man when he was still just a child. Everything was pulling at him and he took his boyfriends keys. Him and his best friends were being normal teenagers but it ended in tragedy. It cost him more than just a year of his life, it cost him his home. He made a promise to never come home, but now he was being forced to do so. He had to protect his sister and nephew.

Daniel’s life had changed nine years ago. His boyfriends choices destroyed them all, but when he was caught in a life and death struggle, he too decided it was time to go home. He had taken over the medical practice back home but still had to deal with his past. Then to his shock, Micah had came home.

This story felt so real and made one think that they were right there with them. A town broken from the death of a loved one, a broken family, and so much pain that it felt like you were tasting the acid from it. When you are young, pain festers and comes out in a different way. You tear down each others worlds only to find out that the truth is so much more. A young nineteen year old dead and another whose life had been changed by loosing his leg and being scarred from the fire is deep, but then you have Micah who had been charged with it all. He just wanted to protect his family and find peace.

I have read several stories written by this author and have always knew that I would be getting a story full of feeling and heart. It caught my attention from the moment I started reading and kept it all the way to the end. It was a fascinating story with so much sorrow and anger, then regret and love. When we are teenagers we don’t think of the actual ending to certain things we do, but what these people went through was so much more. I will warn you that you will need tissues available.

R.J. Scott has an amazing ability to give you a story that holds so much meaning in it and will make you smile in the end. I enjoyed reading this book and can not wait to get my hands on the next book.

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: Each book in the Dark Knights collection features a new romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and cross over characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order. This series is a branch off from Brac Pack, Zeus’s Pack, Christian’s Coven, Brac Village, Demon Warriors, Wolves of Desire, Brac Pack Next Gen, and so forth. I would start this series by reading the first Book in Brac Pack.

The Dark Knights were formed to get rid of the hunters and now that the leader of the hunter were dead, things are getting harder. Devil is one of the knights but he only took the job to save his life. His pack had wanted him dead and the chance was a good one. To bad he wasn’t really a killer and one of the names on the list was a man he owed. A man who saved him, and the man who was his mates ex. Should make it easier I suppose.

Ryan had been dating Jeff for a few months, till Jeff dumped him by text. His best friend was the one that decided to get him out of the house and straight into Devil’s arms. However there are many surprises that Ryan doesn’t know yet, and boy can you imagine his expression when he does find out.

I came across Lynn when her first book for Brac Pack came out, and she was a favorite ever since. Her stories have quite a bit of humor in them, especially when Cecil gets involved. It is like a ride that never ends. They have a serious tone to it, but more humor then serious. I get a kick out of them and always look forward to the next one. Now if only there were humans who treated their love like the men in these books treat theirs.

I got a kick out of this and would definitely recommend it.

Review: This story is mostly about the fault and the many names he has been throughout his life. We are also given a preview of how he became the Vault in the first place. I loved that.

Conrad’s character was rather complex at times given the many name changes and the circumstances surrounding this. I loved the story as I got an in depth look at the man and all he has been through.

The actual romance does not take place right away and it is someone from Conrad’s past. My heart broke for these two men who were denied a life together due to the beliefs of the time. I so wanted to shout that it was not fair to these men.

All in all I liked this story much better than the first book.

Great read.

Sanderson Beets had escaped the Moonlight Market to attend college, hoping to settle into a normal life, maybe meet someone and fall in love. To obtain that new life he made a dangerous bargain. And when the sinister woman known as the Weaver of Dreams is involved, second chances always come with strings attached…and sacrifices. Review: Cory and his sister Poe have had a hard life. Poe had been injured in the same accident that had killed their parents. Cory took over taking care of Poe, basically giving up his life. Poe had been badly burned and her soul was wasting away. Then she found the magic in the Moonlight Market.

Cory was a senior in college and was trying to get to know Sanderson. However Sanderson had a dark secret. He was a carne, but he had to give something up to be able to go to school and have a different life. But payment time was coming up. When Cory showed up looking for his lost sister, Sanderson was to give him to the weaver. But his heart shows him a different direction.

This story starts with sex between our two main characters but nothing more. They might have had a chemistry, but it was hard to tell with this story. More anger, pain and stress is what you get with this story. The ending was actually better then I had expected, but I will admit that I wished I had never read this story.

It has a dark tone to it, and if I had read the blurb first, I would have never even gave it a chance. This is one of the creepiest stories I have ever came across. The story itself is well written and the plot is extremely good. The problem is there is no connection with the characters at all. Why give up a life, if the dang idiot girl is over the age limit. The old weaver is just a witch, and we all know where witches end up.

This is one of the worst stories I have read and I am afraid that it has made it difficult to even think of reading another book by this author. I hate to admit it, but this story was definitely not for me.

by

Lane Hayes

Nick Jorgensen is a quirky genius. He’s made a fortune in the competitive high tech field with his quick mind and attention to detail. He believes in hard work and trusting his gut. And he believes in karma. It’s the only thing that makes sense. People are difficult, but numbers never lie. In the disastrous wake of a broken engagement to an investor’s daughter, Nick is more certain than ever he isn’t relationship material.

Wes Conrad owns a thriving winery in Napa Valley. The relaxed atmosphere is a welcome departure from his former career as a high-rolling businessman. Wes’s laid-back nature is laced with a fierceness that appeals to Nick. In spite of his best intention to steer clear of complications, Nick can’t fight his growing attraction to the sexy older man who seems to understand him. Even the broken parts he doesn’t get himself. However, when Wes’s past collides with Nick’s present, both men will have to have to decide if they’re ready to lean into the ultimate fall.

Blurb: A fairy-tale vacation—if he can get the ending right.

American nurse Finch Mason steps beyond the comfort of his orderly life and takes a dream trip to England, complete with a National Trust Pass so he can visit numerous historical sites. At the first one on his list, he’s warmly welcomed—and told he bought a pass good for two.

Finch doesn’t hesitate to offer the pass to Benedict, a handsome Brit also there on an outing. They spend a magical week touring the countryside, and while it’s too soon to get attached, Finch wishes their time together would never end.

Then Finch finds himself stuck abroad with no money, and he has no one to turn to but Benedict. Benedict is happy to help, but he also owes Finch some answers—such as who he really is and why he was at the estate where they first met.

Review: Two For Trust is by Elle Brownlee and published under the Dreamspun Desires imprint. I have already read this book and so unlike when I read the book (going into the book completely open minded since I wasn’t sure if I’d read anything by the author in the past, still not sure by the way), I knew what to expect when I listened to this one.

I was looking forward to the OTT drama and romance. I was looking forward to the whole “Lord of the Manor” type of thing, bordering on a Mr Darcy like personality that is totally attractive, especially if you’re into take-charge, strong aristocrats. I used to be addicted to ready regency romances with rakish Marquises and devilish dukes, so I was more than happy to pass time on my flight to visit family and friends with this audio.

The story is about American nurse, Finch, and the charming Englishman, Benedict. (Yes, I’m sure some of you are thinking Benedict Cumberbatch and sniggering, I know I did that a bit).

Sweet guy with a tragic past, Finch, is on his dream holiday of a life time in England. A mix up in ticketing leaves him with a double pass for one week instead of one pass for two weeks. Handsome Englishman, Benedict, happens to be at the National Trust Site Finch is visiting when he finds out this information and Finch happily invites Benedict to take on the second pass. However, this being a romance fiction, it is all too obvious that there is more to Benedict than meets the eye. After the week finishes Finch feels he is ready to part ways, though there is a definite spark between the guys. But when all his belongings are stolen, Finch has no one but Benedict to turn to – which is where he learns the truth.

OK, I really did enjoy reading this book, I truly did, but I didn’t fully connect with the characters. However, I think that Andrew McFerrin’s narration injected enough emotion that I liked this book far more in audio than I did when I read the eBook. There isn’t a lot of hot and heavy romance (in fact there was no sex), which I would expect from a love at first sight sort of trope, but it was nice to see the guys get to know each other for a week before getting all angsty.

If you’re into sweet, old fashioned and very English types of stories, this might be your type thing. For those that hate insta-love (and I know there are lots of you), you’d probably do best to stay away from this one, particularly since there is no actual sex going on as well (I personally find insta-love tolerable in even the worst cases if there is hot sex).

Review: I have mixed emotions about this story. On the one hand Mercer and what all has happened to him throughout his life to where he is now and what his mission is, is really interesting. On the other hand, I really do not want to say this, I thought Brinley, Mercer’s love interest, was over the top. I mean who actually acts like that. I kept rolling my eyes and wishing it would stop especially when tough guy Mercer joined in.

So needless to say I did not enjoy Mercer and Brinley at the beginning of their relationship. It was too corny and over the top for me. Now add in danger from Mercer’s boss, a mysterious man that Mercer knows from his past and battle scenes that I enjoyed and I was happy.

The Vault was fascinating. I was floored because it was not what I thought it was going to be. So I was pleasantly surprised. Well written story that I only enjoyed a portion of.

O.k. read. Sorry but Brinley and Mercer’s beginning ruined it for me.

Tobias Walker grew up hearing about white knights and princes riding in on a white horse to save the day. That was until his father died and he was forced to live in the basement of his stepmother’s home. Then he was forced to face the harsh reality of life—fairy tales didn’t exist.

Finch Jarsdel had recently retired from England’s infamous SAS. Had he known he’d sit in his flat all day binge watching the telly, he might never have left his special forces unit, even if his heart had no longer been in it. When he received a phone call to chase down Bigfoot, he thought the guy was touched in the head. But with nothing else to do, Finch headed to a small town in North Carolina called Cedar Falls.

Review: Each book in the Cedar Falls collection features a new romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and cross over characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order.

Future Warning: Jesse is now Mayor and he is out of control, all in a good way. He has decided that there needs to be a place that hunts Bigfoot. He has asked one of the residents for a clue on who to hire. Finch is in a dark spot, so when Jesse calls offering him a chance at a fresh start he jumps at the idea. He just had not expected that he would be hunting for bigfoot in the future. Nor did he expect to find a sexy man that he would want with all his heart.

Tobias has had a rough life. When his father passed away, that left him with his step-family. A step-family from hell. I sure do hope his step-brother gets his ass kicked in the end. So when a very hot man makes a move on him, well you can imagine what he does. Things are going to get real interesting real fast.

Excitement, adventure, true friends, hot sex and well you can just guess what is in this amazing package. It caught my attention from the start and kept it all the way to the end. Shea is an awesome author with a great imagination that will keep a reader entertained.

I had a kick out of reading this book and can’t wait to get my hands on the next book.

Review: Carlos is a hard worker and takes his job at the ranch seriously. When an old flame shows up Carlos takes it upon himself to show the man he is not the way the man remembers.

Jules and his stepson Albert move to Mercy under stressful circumstances. Upon learning that the ranch has horses Al is ecstatic and quickly becomes a part of the everyday hustle and bustle of it. Jules on the other hand is wary due to Carlos being his ex lover and the man who broke his heart.

A truly wonderful and sweet story about forgiveness, love and second chances. I loved that Jules did not give in right away and made Carlos prove he was a changed man.

Great read.
