Chance to be King
Sue Brown
After working nonstop for two years, actor Eric Pawlowski desperately needs a respite from his grueling schedule and the crippling migraines that come with it. Thinking that a few weeks in a secluded cottage is just the thing, his vacation gets off to a rough start when he almost mows down the only other guy who lives on the remote road. Fortunately Thomas is quick to forgive, and soon he, Eric, and Eric’s two dogs are palling around like they’ve known each other for years.
But when Eric witnesses Thomas coldly order a lost stranger off his property, he starts to question how well he knows him. Despite a mutual attraction that has Eric cursing every time a well-meaning member of the nearby small town interrupts their attempts to get intimate, Eric wonders if acting on his desire for Thomas will get him involved in a situation he shouldn’t be in. When his rented cabin catches fire in the middle of the night and the firemen call it arson, it confirms Eric’s suspicions.
To keep Eric with him, it’s up to Thomas to come clean about who he is… and his involvement in a decade-old web of tragedy and revenge into which Eric has unwittingly walked.

Review: Firstly, I am going to say this, I think that the main characters, Eric and Thomas are wonderful and they definitely have the “spark” between them as soon as they meet. Their story is enjoyable. I really loved the complexity and development of their characters. There is also a mystery and suspense component to the story that is really easy to get into. Although the characters are instantly attracted to each other, it was also interesting to see them get to know each other as people, even when there is life threatening danger and they flirted before getting some facts straight.
That being said, the romance part of the story seemed incidental. The mystery of Eric discovering who Thomas is and about his story is the main part of the story. Knowing for sure that they get together is just a little bonus. It seems pretty clear from the start with their sizzling chemistry that they’ll get together. The bigger question is, will they stay that way after all the shit comes to pass? Despite the attention being on Thomas’s personal history, I felt that we weren’t cheated in any way of not finding out as much about Eric’s back story – although the scene with his agent and speaking to his mother on the phone is funny. As a reader, I think I learnt a lot of Eric as he tried to puzzle his way through Thomas’s life.
Just to get this out of the way, there are a few parts of the story which have just niggled at my mind. Firstly, the title, where the hell does it come from??? Eric is an actor and when the mystery of Thomas is solved, it’s nowhere near related to the title either! Secondly, after flirting for a few days (I think there was kissing, too), Eric is surprised that Thomas is gay and Thomas is on the offensive when he announces to Eric that he is gay. Odd, but I suppose I can let it slide for now. And I have to admit that I thought that the book started off a little slow for my tastes. But you’re like me, keep going because it quickly becomes a wonderful read and not at all boring.
I never read the first edition, so I’m not sure what has actually changed between revisions. Nonetheless, this is a good book and despite my few issues I will go back and reread it one day. On a final and very random note, a minor character that intrigued me was the cop, Mark – I really want to know his story! But it is Eric’s dogs, which also save Eric’s life and steal the show every time they appear.
Based on the sample provided I think I will be a fan of Sue Brown.
