Elizabeth Noble & The Imperfection of Heroes!

A great big thank you to MM Good Book Reviews for hosting me today!

We love our heroes and superheroes and we want them to be, well, heroic. Heroes are supposed to be above reproach, not make mistakes or do questionable things. They aren’t supposed to disagree with each other when facing an enemy.

The problem with perfection is no one is perfect.

Every day, men and women who’ve dedicated their lives to uphold the peace throughout the world face Catch-22s regarding how to protect their people, country and innocent lives. How far do you go to stop an assassination or terrorist attack you know is being planned?

In book one of The Vampire Guard, Code Name Jack Rabbit the characters face exactly those sorts of difficult decisions.

The main characters in this slightly alternative urban fantasy universe are vampires and a werewolf. These two species are afforded much longer lifespans than their human contemporaries. A werewolf lifespan is on average 250 years, and vampires verge on being immortal. This gives a person a very different perspective on life. Just like the human species they share their world with, the members of these two species have ideals and beliefs. They love their country, root for various sports teams, and like different toppings on their pizzas, just like the rest of us. By joining The Vampire Guard, they dive into the world of terrorists, espionage and international intrigue. Paranormal beings working together and in secret to protect the world and keep innocent humans, werewolves and vampires alike safe.

Their unique physical abilities also gives them an almost superhero status. They run faster, heal quicker, can’t be seen on camera and have heightened senses of smell and hearing. They shouldn’t have to resort trickery or deceit to obtain information and catch the bad guy. Yet, they do. The reason is simple, often those bad guys are werewolves or vampires and have the same abilities.

The four men of Operative Team Jack Rabbit, Forge, Blair, Declan and Lucas, face the harsh reality of their job: to protect innocent lives, their own beliefs and morals are tested in a very powerful way. Obtaining information from an adversary who is just as dedicated to his cause is no easy task. It’s also one that brings to the forefront ideals and beliefs of each man. Without giving away spoilers, suffice to say these men don’t always agree on the best methods to use. Two of the men are older and more experienced, they’ve seen much more of man’s inhumanity to man, fought in numerous wars and struggled to make their part of the world safer. As a result, they’re ready to take more drastic steps to stop some very bad people.

Heroes (and superheroes) need flaws. They need to make hard choices and sometimes disagree on the best course of action. They need to be wrong from time to time. Without those life experiences they can’t become heroic. Saving the world is a great idea, but real heroes need to make some very difficult choices and take drastic action to achieve that goal. What makes a hero is the ability and willingness to sometimes go above and beyond and then live with the consequences of their actions.

Were their choices always right? Heck no. Did they achieve their goal of protecting those unable to protect themselves? Yes. Is everyone going to agree with their means? No, they’re not. As a writer I’m influenced by the world around me. Bad things sometimes happen and I recognize the fact that those whose lives are dedicated to putting an end to crime and terrorism have to use extreme measures at times. These people are the ultimate heroes. Writing stories with such elements and not addressing what are sometimes personally devastating choices that must be made by heroes would be wrong.

There are no true white or black hats, simply varying shades of gray. Those villains always truly believe they’re doing something grand. Our heroes sometimes come from shady backgrounds. The difference is heroes defend the innocent, villains use them as an end to their means. The members of the Vampire Guard make mistakes while trying to defend the world from those that seek to do it harm. However, they always support each other through the personal and emotional consequences of those mistakes. It’s part of the very strong glue that binds them as a team.

Catching the bad guy often requires heroes to push the boundaries and test the limits of a hero’s morality. Every hero needs a small inner villain to channel when the need arises and the ends must justify the means.

That’s why we need imperfections in heroes. It’s not the ability to run faster or change into a wolf that make the members of The Vampire Guard heroes. What makes them heroes are their imperfections.

Forge nodded. “I get it. With a little….” He held up one finger and frowned. A quick look around the room and Forge’s gaze settled on a man and woman. Lucas leaned closer so he could hear what was being said through Forge’s earbud.

“We can’t identify that couple. They weren’t here earlier, and they’re not on our list. Do you know them?” It was Samuels’s voice.

Lucas met Forge’s gaze and shook his head. Forge turned so it looked like he was talking to Lucas and said, “No, neither Dr. Coate nor I recognize them.”

Tapping Forge’s forearm, Lucas dipped his head at Declan and grinned.

“We’ll get you some ID. Give me five minutes,” Forge said. He pressed the earbud and removed it, dumping it in his pocket. The wristband followed a second later. “It’s better they don’t know about this part.” He stood, straightened, and whispered, “Declan. See the woman in the red dress and the man with her at my three o’clock?”

Across the room Lucas watched as Declan casually turned, gaze sweeping the area before he tugged on his sleeve once.

“That’s a yes,” Forge told Lucas. Using two fingers he pretended to reach into Lucas’s pocket, then said quietly, “On both.” Reaching out, he put one arm around Lucas’s shoulders and guided him toward the door near where the couple stood. “You must have gotten a bad crab cake.”

Lucas made a big show of slouching against Forge and making retching noises. A few people looked at them and moved out of their way. He got a glimpse of Declan leaning in to talk to Blair. Then they both looked at the spot between Forge and Lucas and the couple.

Coughing and holding his stomach, Lucas stumbled away from Forge and into the woman. “Oh, I’m… sorry… I….”

The woman turned and with lightning speed Forge reached out and bumped her elbow, causing her to upend her drink all over herself. Lucas’s gaze shifted to Declan and Blair. They were in one spot across the room, and in the next instant the exit doors across the room swung shut.

“The ladies’ room is right through there.” Lucas pointed the way. He tried wiping her off with napkins he snatched from the bar, but she stormed off, her gentleman friend following her.

Forge took his elbow and nodded to the exit. “Come on.”

Lucas had to quickstep to keep pace with Forge. They left the ballroom for the hotel’s main corridor leading to the lobby. Forge looked one way and Lucas the other. Snagging Forge’s sleeve, Lucas said in a low voice, “Over there.”

They walked as quickly as they could and still appear casual to a smaller conference room across the hall and down a bit. The minute they slipped inside, Declan shut the door softly. It was dark inside, but the meager light coming under the door from the brightly lit hallway and the glow of Blair’s phone was more than enough for all of them to see by. Declan held a phone and both a man’s and woman’s wallet.

Blair held out a second phone to Lucas. “Hold this, will you?” As soon as Lucas took that phone, Blair retrieved the other one from Declan and did something to it. He looked up after a few seconds and grinned. “Cloning them.”

About Elizabeth

Elizabeth Noble lives by the adage “I can’t not write”. She can’t remember a time when she didn’t make up stories and eventually she learned how to write them down. A part of every day is spent living in worlds she created that are filled with intrigue and espionage.  Using a real love of scifi and urban fantasy highlighted by twisty plots she crafts stories taking place in a slightly altered version of our world.

When she’s not chronicling the adventures of her many characters Elizabeth is a veterinary nurse living in her native Cleveland, Ohio. She shares her little brick house with an adorable canine princess and her tabby cat side-kick. Elizabeth is a fan of baseball, basketball (go Cavs and Indians!) and gardening. She can often be found working in her ‘outside office’ listening to classic rock and plotting her next novel waiting for it to be dark enough to gaze at the stars.

Elizabeth received several amateur writing awards. Since being published two of her novels have received honorable mentions in the Rainbow Awards. Her novel Jewel Cave was a runner up in the 2015 Rainbow awards in the Gay Mystery/Thriller category.
