A year ago Casey Kelley lived in a Temple, a secluded school required for mages until they were ready to decide if they wished to stay in the safety of the Temple or if they wanted to venture out into the world. To prove herself she was given the task of defeating a powerful necromancer. Not everything had gone the way it was supposed to.

But now Casey is living her life with her girlfriend and her dog like any normal couple, a quiet, though sometimes boring, life that she had been looking forward too after the events of last year. Until an old friend shows up at her door to tell her dark elves have planned an attack on the Temple and asks her to help him stop it.

It isn’t just the Temple the dark elves want to destroy, it’s everything. After centuries of being forced to live in underground cities and being seen as mere animals compared to those on the surface they’re ready to start a war. And Casey has to build an army to stop them.

Nikolai Joslin!

This is the second book of the trilogy I started in high school, The Fires of Destiny. When I was in high school I was always looking for more LGBTQ+ books and stories to read and found the genre lacking, especially in Fantasy Fiction. So I started writing Life Beyond the Temple which was about magic in a modern day setting, elves, and saving the world but also had girls falling in love with other girls. And with Cold Front I’m excited to continue Casey’s story, both in romance but also in being a much needed hero for her world. She has always been a very strong mage but with the trials now before her she’ll need more help than just the friends she made a year before. And as if a war with the dark elves wasn’t enough, old ghosts come back to haunt her, tensions with her friends rise, and getting this many different kinds of people to work together always comes with problems.

Nobody answered. Instead they all looked away, avoiding my gaze.

“Grandfather, please.”

“Casey,” he started tentatively, “I think you should leave. Come back tomorrow, and we will talk more on the subject after we have discussed this amongst ourselves.” He was sending me away but still trying to tell me he would talk on my behalf.

“No, this isn’t something you can shut me out of. I’m supposed to be leading the men and women who are fighting to protect a place they had never seen before a few days ago. Many of them will probably die protecting you. I need to know you are on my side for this.”

“Casey, you have to understand, this just isn’t something we can readily believe. Dwarves? Pixies? Underfae? A war of all things? What’s next, dragons?” He reached out to touch my shoulder, but I jerked away.

“I’m not lying to you, Grandfather. I’ve seen these things with my own eyes.”

“I’m not saying you’re lying, I just—”

Suddenly we heard glass shattering as it fell to the floor, and the whole building began to shake violently. Screams came from down the hall, and the door was flung open once more. A small, thin silhouette stood there, panting and visibly shaking.

“The-there’s something going on outside,” he stammered.

“It is just an earthquake, child,” Senior Laquin answered, a fake smile plastered on her face but fear in her eyes.

“No, it’s not. It-it’s magic. They bl-blasted a hole in the wa-wall. There a-are dark elves everywhere, ma-ma-ma’am.”

I spun on my heel to face her. “I wasn’t lying.”
