Creature Feature 02

Rise of the Revenants by Poppy Dennison

Vampyres are on the loose in Detroit, and novice hunter Taz Cohen is on the job. The mission seems simple: stop the vamps. But Taz knows nothing about the mythical creatures, so he’s in for the fight of his life. Then he meets insanely attractive construction worker Darren Foster, who jumps into the battle with both feet. Sparks and bullets fly as they struggle against the vampyre horde and their attraction to each other. Avoiding gruesome death from the undead might be easier than shielding their hearts from each other.

Legacy of Blood and Death by Rhys Ford

For Javi Navarro, Detroit will become another blood-splattered city in his rearview mirror after he puts its dead back into the ground. Expecting an easy hunting job, Javi instead finds a kiss of ancient vampyres on the hunt for a descendent of their long-dead creator.

Reclusive Ciarnan Mac Gerailt abandoned his family legacy of blood and death magic after it nearly destroyed him. Unfortunately for Ciarnan, the Motor City can only be saved if he resumes his dark arts and joins forces with Javi Navarro, the hunter who brought the vampyre apocalypse—and hope for the future—straight to Ciarnan’s front door.

Behind the Scenes of Creature Feature 2

One of the most fun things about collaborating with other authors is having someone to bounce ideas off of. The push and pull of the creative process normally only happens in our own head, but when Rhys Ford and I began working on Creature Feature 2, I knew magic was going to happen. From the beginning, the story of hunters Taz and Javi came together even though they happen in separate novellas.

Much like the first volume of Creature Feature, Rhys and I have each written our own stories, but this time, we have a prologue and epilogue that ties the two novellas together. My hunter, Taz, is tasked with finding the descendant of a mage who may just have the ability to save Detroit from a kiss of revenant vampyres who’ve escaped from their make-shift prison.

It was amazing seeing Rhys’s story develop as I worked on mine, the differences in our writing styles and voices, and the way we each told a story set in the same place and time.  Our readers are in for a bumpy ride. It’s a bit on the stinky side too—I mean, these are decades old decrepit vamps! They reek!

Here’s a sneak peek of the first meeting of Taz and his love interest Darren. Hope you enjoy it!

Excerpt:

Taz really didn’t have time to argue, no matter how big the guy’s package appeared to be in his fit-just-right jeans. He wanted to know why the guy was at this house, maybe get his number for when he got the vampyre problem taken care of so he could work in a little stress relief, and then he needed to get into that house and make sure it was as deserted as it appeared. And he really didn’t want a face full of that damn spray. He’d have to tread lightly to get his answers.

That wasn’t going to happen. Over hottie’s shoulder, movement of the unnatural variety. He’d not actually seen one of the creatures at the construction site, but he’d definitely seen what they were capable of. He needed to get this guy out of here, and fast.

“So, my name’s Taz. What’s yours

The guy arched a brow but answered, “Darren.”

“Okay, Darren. I’m going to reach into my pocket for a second. Don’t want you freaking out on me and giving me a face full of that pepper spray.”

Taz paused for a second for his words to sink in, then reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys.

“Now, I’m going to toss you my car keys. I want you to go get in my car. It’s the black one just behind me. You be ready to get the hell out of here, okay?”

“What?” Darren stepped back, but Taz tossed the keys anyway. Darren caught them one-handed.

“Darren, go!”

The vampyre had gotten closer. Taz couldn’t see much of it, but he didn’t need to. The stench of death filled the night air. Fuck, that thing reeked.

Darren caught the scent at that moment and spun around in a move that would impress an NFL running back. He ended up behind Taz.

About Poppy & Rhys

Poppy Dennison

Poppy:

A sassy southern lady, Poppy Dennison developed an obsession with things that go bump in the night in her early years after a barn door flew off its hinges and nearly squashed her. Convinced it was a ghost trying to get her attention, she started looking for other strange and mysterious happenings around her. Not satisfied with what she found, Poppy has traveled to Greece, Malaysia and England to find inspiration for the burly bears and silver foxes that melt her butter. Her love of paranormal continues to flourish nearly thirty years later, and she writes steamy love stories about the very things that used to keep her up all night. If her childhood ghost is lucky, maybe one day she’ll give him his own happily ever after.

You can find out more about Poppy’s books on her website http://www.poppydennison.com/

Rhys:

Rhys  admits to sharing the house with three cats of varying degrees of black fur and a ginger cairn terrorist. Rhys is also enslaved to the upkeep a 1979 Pontiac Firebird, a Toshiba laptop, and an overworked red coffee maker.

And at the Starbucks down the street. No really, they’re 24/7. And a drive-thru. It’s like heaven.

Review: This is a fantastic double feature from two brilliant authors; each book complements the other so we are given a treat of paranormal and fast paced relationships.

Rise of the Revenants by Poppy Dennison: ♥♥♥♥♥ 4 ½ Hearts

Taz is called in when a house under construction becomes a crime scene, a vampyre nest has been disturbed and slaughtered the construction workers and its Taz’s job to hunt them down… but Taz is used to hunting down werewolves and these Revenants have an extra kick as they hunt for the blood descendants of the mage they fed on many years before. Darren wants to know what really happened to his co-workers and goes hunting for answers and gets the shock of his life when he’s thrown head first into the paranormal world, but it does have its perks in the shape of sexy hunter Taz. Can Taz and Darren really help save Detroit from the ravenous vampyre’s especially when it’s not just the vamp’s they have to worry about?

This first story was fantastic, not only do we get a couple of hunky men getting together as they fight evil but we have brilliant supporting characters who jump in feet first as well. Taz has been hunting the lurking evil for years, but he specialises in werewolves so tracking the vamps is a bit of a challenge. When he meets up with Darren his first thought is to get him away from the danger but it isn’t long before Darren offers his help (demands to help), and as their attraction flares they still look for a way to find the vamps and it leads to them being trapped with Darren’s co-workers between a poltergeist, a werewolf and several very hungry vamps.

I loved this story and really loved how all the characters played off each other, Darren and Taz are well suited to each other neither one ducking what is happening between them or ignoring the threat of the vamps so it’s a very nice balance. Darren’s co-workers were amazing as they stepped up to help stop the vamps, they took it in stride as they got an unwelcome dip into the paranormal world and they added something extra to the story. Now with the paranormal world we are introduced to its best to forget everything you think you know about paranormals because these vampyres aren’t the friendly, sparkling kind oh no these are the mindless, death smelling, I’m gonna rip your guts out kind and the werewolf isn’t much better. The storyline is great and you never lose what is going on, yes the relationship between Taz and Darren happens fast but it is during an intense time and actually fits both men well.

I recommend you read this story is you love a bit of paranormal gore, great characters, hot sex and hotter men, and a great storyline.

Legacy of Blood and Death by Rhys Ford: ♥♥♥♥ 4 Hearts

Javi is called in when a house under construction becomes a crime scene, a vampyre nest has been disturbed and slaughtered the construction workers and its Javi’s job to hunt them down, but discovering the whereabouts of the direct descendant of the Blood mage who first created the vamps isn’t the hardest part, convincing him to help save Detroit is. Ciarnan Mac Gerailt turned his back on his magic after it nearly killed him and did kill some of his friends, he’s trying to live a simple life with his dark fae familiar and his wolf hybrid companion but his quite is shattered with the arrival of a vampyre revenant and the hunter who is out to destroy them.

This was a brilliant story where a hunter and an ex blood mage have to work together to save the innocent. Javi is surprised when he first meets Ciarnan (a shovel to the head can do that to a man) as Ciarnan isn’t what he envisaged a blood mage would look like, Ciarnan turned his back on magic for a reason and isn’t happy when Javi turns up at his door but can’t deny the man his help. Their attraction is immediate, sparking between them, building up before they act on it but they never forget the threat that is still coming. Javi has to convince Ciarnan to act. It isn’t easy for Ciarnan though because of what happened in the past, but Javi manages to crack his shell with his blunt words.

Oh this was most definitely a story with a darker tone; the paranormals we come across are that slight bit darker than those in Poppy’s story. First we have the vampyre’s that are just that more disgusting and nasty, then we have Shaddock, a tiny dark fae familiar who thinks nothing of wanting tasty treats like human brains and gummy bears. Ciarnan isn’t as dark as he could have been; he just tips the boundaries into good which actually suits him very well. Ciarnan’s relationship with Javi changes him that bit more so he has more concern about those around him. The story is wonderfully written and there is always something happening, the characters work together well and you can see why they were written as they are. The relationship is an intense one but there is a huge wealth of growth between them even in the short amount of time they are together so it isn’t a huge surprise that they want what they want.

I recommend this story to those who love challenges, instant attraction becoming more, fighting evil, great characters, paranormal gore and a great ending.

Overall:

I have to say that it isn’t often that you get such a complimentary duo of stories but these two stories certainly fit together perfectly, it isn’t just the main stories that fit together, it’s the characters from both stories as well; with Poppy’s they are lighter with a light humor and with Rhys’s they have that streak of darkness with a darker humor, both sets of characters fit in with the vampyre’s they are hunting. Yes, I know I am being vague but that is all explained better in the prologue and how the vampyre’s got released and why they are hunting bloodlines from two different mages LOL you can’t expect me to tell you everything 🙂 . So what I will tell you guys is that if you love a paranormal that isn’t all lightness and rainbows, if you do love a bit of nasty and gory, and you love characters with real character then you don’t want to miss these two fantastic books.
