Excerpt
“So,” he said, “if Darren and Javon weren’t a couple, was Darren seeing anyone?”
Jayden shook her head. “Nope. He said he was waiting. He wanted to move away somewhere, like out of state. He wanted to go somewhere where it’s warm all the time. He was trying to learn how to fix cars, wanted to be a mechanic so he could find work anywhere. He wasn’t, like, ambitious or anything. People always thought he was kind of dumb because he wasn’t interested in going to college or getting rich. He just wanted to be happy.”
Paul snorted softly. She had no idea how ambitious that actually was. “So he was working at a garage?”
“Yeah,” she said. “His second cousin got him a job at his brother-in-law’s shop. Heinz Auto. He worked the counter, but Jimmy would teach him stuff when it was slow. He showed him how to replace brakes, change oil, things like that.”
“Anyone giving him a hard time? At school or work, or in the neighborhood?”
“Not really.” Jayden cocked her head. “He was getting notes in his locker for a while, but that stopped. Stupid, ugly shit. ‘I hope you get AIDS and die, fag.’ Stuff like that. So retro.”
Paul gave her the up and down with a slightly amused smirk and said, “Maybe they saw him walking with you and thought it was nineteen eighty-six.”
She bugged out her eyes. “Oh my god, policeman. Did you throw shade at me?”
“When I throw shade, you’ll know it, sugar,” Paul said, in a slightly put-on voice that wasn’t exactly his. He felt a bit like a fraud, but he enjoyed her reaction. He was glad to make her laugh for a few seconds before she remembered that her best friend was gone forever.

Review: Assigned a new homicide case Paul gets to work fast with his partner Tim, but in the midst’s of hunting for any clue Paul has to find a new place to live, his ex has finally had enough and tells him to move out. As they search for a suspect in the murder of two teenagers they begin to find a number of people who are suspicious, and discovering just who the murderer is isn’t as easy as they hoped. Paul’s love life becomes a little more complicated as well when an old flame comes back to the city and a cute guy in a bar catches Paul’s eye.
I quite enjoyed this story; it has a very strong main storyline with the murder case and a secondary storyline of Paul’s love life. The murder investigation leads us on a real mystery hunt as suspects just seem to crawl out of the woodwork, each one a viable suspect as the story unfolds and their connections are revealed. The investigation has a depth to it that is sometimes missing in mystery stories, the way Paul and Tim have to slog through reams of paper and hot footing it around talking to witnesses and suspects, rather than just having everything at their fingertips and falling into their laps.
Paul’s romantic life is just all up in the air, it’s difficult to pick which guy you want Paul to eventually choose, Owen the ex from long ago who has matured and seems to be really interested in giving it a go, or David the ex-minister who regrets his life choices and desperately needs friends and seems to have taken a heartfelt liking to Paul. I’d like to say Paul has a clear idea of who he’d like to be with but I think it’s a situation that is going to take some time before it becomes clear.
So this isn’t a romance, it does have romantic leanings but they are far from clear and far from completion. I can’t wait to see what happens as Paul works out his love life; I’ve also got to say that I really can’t wait for his and Tim’s next case because watching those two work together is just fantastic. Paul is a very interesting character; he makes discoveries about himself as he lays his relationship with Andy behind him. Owen and David are both great characters and while Owen seems the most suitable love interest, David’s back story makes him the one who needs the redemption of love.
I recommend this to those readers who adore mysteries, great characters, a brilliant storyline, complex love interests and knowing there is more to come.
