Idolatry

(Reagalos 02)

by

Rebecca Cohen

Upon taking the throne as High Lord of Katraman and Liege of Scura, Lornyc Reagalos’s focus on rebuilding one city and reassuring another leaves little time for his husband, Methian. Added to that, he must contend with the unexpected revelation that his grandfather, Romanus, set up his own religion and named an enigmatic figure called The One as its deity. Through some twisted interpretation of the signs left by Romanus, the Cerulean Cult comes to believe Lornyc is their god and invites him to sanctify the Cult as part of its five-hundred-year anniversary.

During the Sanctification Ceremony, the Cult’s holy relic, an orb given to it by Romanus, is split, releasing an entity that tears a hole in the dimensions. The species that guards the dimensions, the Valen, force Lornyc to fix the breach, or they will have him extinguished.

Now as Lornyc faces a race through the different planes of existence to capture the escaped entity, he must rely on his own Valen guardians to help him. With Methian and his family by his side, Lornyc must fight to repair the damage or lose his life.

LORNYC HIT a glass barrier and staggered back. He shook away the shock and blinked repeatedly as he stared up at the enormous glass column filled with blue goo. A low hiss came from the bottom of the column and he crouched to see steam escaping from a leaking gasket. The column was so large it took up almost the whole of one wall, and next to it was a giant metal contraption connected to the column with long metal reinforced tubes. The metal beast was made of cogs and levers with a giant red button on the side that made Lornyc’s finger twitch to push it.

He glanced around the rest of the room. An open chest sat to one side, half-filled with tools, some in better condition than others, and on the opposite wall was a winch with what looked like manacles attached. Lornyc swallowed thickly—that didn’t look good.

Diam arrived, took one look at the dangling shackles, and grimaced. “That is quite disturbing.”

“Either very bad or very kinky,” said Lornyc with a cheeky grin. “I don’t think even Methian would be up for that.”

Diam shooed him into the portal. “I really don’t need to hear about your sex life.”

Back in the stasis bubble, Lornyc made straight for the other Lornyc and accessed his memories. He chuckled at the absurdity of what he saw, but sobered when he realized what was going on.

“So?” Diam handed him a pile of clothes, including a pair of leather gauntlets and brass-framed goggles.

“Evil megalomaniac set on world domination,” he replied, putting the goggles on his head.

“Very funny.”

“I’m not joking,” called Lornyc from behind the screen as he changed. “He’s got Vella, Kat, Josheta, and Nathaniel in a cage in the dungeon, and intends to dip them into the blue goo as part of his experiment to set off a bizarre chain reaction. There’s no staff in his large house, and he’s got Methian chained to a wall in his bedroom—although I think that part is consensual given the relationship they have.”

Diam laughed and then stopped herself. “They do say that every possible connotation is acted out in a dimension somewhere. Perhaps you’re hiding your inner evil genius.”

“I’m not evil,” Lornyc said, emerging wearing a pair of black jodhpurs, silk shirt, and waistcoat, and shiny knee-length boots. He put on the gauntlets. “I look bloody stupid.”

“Oh, I don’t know. I think it suits you.” She handed him the bag with the orb. “Since everyone is in the house, and no one to interrupt, you don’t need me to round up the others. There’s four black smocks in there for those in the cage.”

“And for Methian?”

She smirked. “He wasn’t wearing anything.”

Review: This book is part of a series and must be read in order. Lornyc is now ruler of two city states after the events in Servitude, trying to govern both cities is proving to be taxing especially when it leaves very little time for his husband Methian. Lornyc also discovers that his grandfather still has a few surprises waiting for him when he is contacted by the Cerulean Cult, the religion his grandfather, Romanus, created in a fit of pique, and they invite him to their five hundred year anniversary as their living God ‘The One’. Another disaster strikes and Lornyc is left to pick up the pieces along with his husband and close friends, and Lornyc also has to handle Methian’s jealousy as Lornyc’s old boyfriend returns home. With a death threat hanging over his head Lornyc must straighten out his city states, deal with the Cerulean Cult, capture the escaped entity and reassure Methian… all while trying to tame his magic.

Well guys this was a true treat to read, I loved Servitude and the world it was set on but I think Idolatry has pipped it to my favourite top spot. Idolatry starts about a month after the end of Servitude, Lornyc is trying to get a grip of Scura as well as his own city state Katraman and trying to spend time with Methian, it isn’t easy for them as they both attend lots of meetings. Lornyc also gets an unpleasant surprise where he discovers that Romanus had set up his own religion which drags Lornyc into an adventure he doesn’t need. Methian struggles with his jealousy and his feelings of inadequacy as Lornyc seems to turn to others to help him run his cities.

I really enjoyed this story and loved seeing Lornyc, Methian and the guys again; Romanus’ actions are once again making Lornyc pay the price and Methian is trying to find his place as being married to Lornyc seems to have changed the status quo. We get to see more of Lornyc’s guardians and their role in Lornyc’s life, we come across some amusing sections involving Romanus’ legacy (brush up on your Latin 🙂 ), there’s some brilliant scenes on other dimensional worlds and there’s a slight mystery involving Nathaniel’s (Lornyc’s uncle) sudden reappearance and it makes me wonder if we will see this world and these characters again in the future.

This story is written beautifully, it keeps you reading very easily as you never know what is going to happen next, the characters are superb as they lead you through the story. The thought that was put into the dimensional worlds was brilliant, each one different with different roles for each of the characters as they slotted into their other selves lives… damn there was one or two worlds stories that I would have loved more of.

I recommend this to those who love high fantasy, brilliant characters, a great storyline, a bit of danger, jealousy boiling over, some giggles and a great ending.
