It’s Simple, Simon

by

Lee Brazil

Simon Carter has achieved unimaginable success and he owes it all to a man from his past whose scorn set fire to his ambition.

“It’s Simple, Simon. You lack ambition.”

Chase Garvin’s jibe had sent Simon Carter on unexpected paths and brought him unimaginable success. No longer a penniless musician, the highly paid investment banker is going home for the first time in years. He plans to rest, relax, and spend a little time rubbing his ex-lover’s nose in his success. A visit to the Renaissance Fair brings this not-quite-so-simple- Simon nose to nose with his past and somehow revenge doesn’t seem quite so attractive.

Chase Garvin, Denver, Colorado’s very own Pie Man, is still incredibly handsome. What’s more, the more mature Chase is very appreciative of Simon’s talents.

When the old attraction flares between them, Simon and the Pie Man get caught up in tasting the wares, and neither counts the pennies.

About Lee

I’m an avid reader and former teacher of grammar and composition who believes that falling in love is the grandest adventure anyone can have. In a nutshell, that’s every story I have to tell. Relocating from the crazy pace of life in Southern California’s Orange County to the beautiful and leisurely atmosphere of the Illinois countryside has given me the time to indulge the desire to write that I set aside when I started teaching fourteen years ago. Pixie’s Review: ♥♥♥♥ 3 ½ – 4 Hearts

Simon was devastated when his lover, Chase, dumped him with the words ‘It’s Simple, Simon. You lack ambition’ now twelve years later he has returned to his childhood home intent on flaunting his success in Chase’s face but it backfires when old feelings arise and misunderstandings get in the way. Chase regrets the way he dumped Simon and is pleased to see him again, after attaining his own success with his pie shops Simon is more than ready to settle down and the carefree romantic lover of old is just what he wants. But when the air is cleared will either man be willing to give up their ambition for love?

This is a really good story where the dreams of a youth come back to bite him on the ass in more ways than one. Simon loved music, relaxing and smoking a bit of pot but when his lover dumps him with a list of his short comings Simon turns his life around, and twelve years later set out to rub Chase’s face in his success. Chase on the other hand has regretted what he said to Simon and now that he is ready to settle down wants the lover that Simon used to be.

I loved watching as Simon and Chase fumbled along with their relationship, you can actually picture the disaster waiting to happen as Chase misunderstands Simon’s situation and you really do feel sorry for Simon as no matter what he did it wasn’t what Chase thought he wanted. Gah Chase was a bit of a dick, he wanted a responsible, driven lover when he was young and now he is older he wants the romantic soul who he rejected when they were younger… poor Simon. Simon was a doll who, although driven to prove Chase wrong, loves his work in banking and Chase’s expectation that Simon would just give it all up for him made him feel like he could never please Chase. *sigh*

The two of them getting together seemed to get thin near the end as Chase wouldn’t think of a compromise and Simon had already changed his life once for Chase only for it not to be what Chase wanted anymore, so Simon was very justified in his refusal to just give everything up again for someone who doesn’t even know what he really wants. Them finding a compromise was lovely but still a little one sided as it was Simon yet again who would be upheaving his life, but they are a hot couple and the love really is there between them.

I recommend this to those who love sweet stories of first loves reuniting, who love men who think they know what they want until life bites back and for a happy ending of compromise.

Thommie’s Review: ♥♥♥ 3 Hearts

Simple Simon met a pieman, Going to the fair;

Says Simple Simon to the pieman, Let me taste your ware.

Says the pieman to Simple Simon, Show me first your penny;

Says Simple Simon to the pieman, Indeed I have not any.

Twelve years and Simon still keeps that last memory of Chase breaking up with him. Those last words he said “It’s simple Simon. You lack ambition…” hunting him and pushing him toward his success. Now he has returned with a single goal, to show his old love just how ambitious he got. What Simon did not expect was how little does a twelve years older Chase care about that, for indeed when he shows up in front of him as a poor man, Chase only cares for him and makes whatever he can to get him back. Hastily made assumptions and unspoken words lead to misunderstandings that Simon was not prepared for. He came back to shove his success and fortune at his ex-lover’s face in a petty act of revenge and ends up falling all over for him, as if he ever stopped wanting the man. And Chase ends up making the same mistake he made twelve years ago. Can he make things right now? Can he win this new Simon and have a life with him?

This is a romance through and through. It somehow reminded me the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks movies, very mellow and with a slight notch of humor. Although it was not entirely my cup of tea, I cannot deny that it had some appeal to me. The characters were cute and sexy, if a bit indifferent. I was more interested in the story itself than Simon and Chase. However their lovemaking made up a lot, I found the sex scenes quite fun and somewhat sensual. Some of them were indeed a bit over-sweet for my taste, but hey, I’m a very peculiar reader.

I’d recommend this story to romance lovers and anyone else in search for a light, enjoyable read. Have fun!!!

  1. Favorite memory about baked goods: coming home from school to a house that smells like chocolate chip cookies freshly baked from the oven, happiness.

    1. coming home from school to chocolate rolls mom made I miss them. I thought they were special and come to find out it was when all we had was flour and cocoa..The simple things are always the best.

  2. I love baking, so there are always new memories being made! I like that moment when you realize a recipe’s a keeper, or when you surprise somebody with something they love but figure they can only get in a bakery…

  3. My favorite memory about baked goods is how much my late father loved banana cream pie. Whenever I see one, I think of him and smile.

  4. My younger brother is severely allergic to chocolate….. imagine growing up in a house that had a permanent ban on chocolate? Most people find that almost inconceivable!!! I still don’t enjoy it that much because I never developed a taste for it. We ate a lot of different deserts instead. Cheesecake, frozen lemon pies, “blond” brownies. My mom was and is a wonderful baker!

  5. I have good childhood memories of home made apple pies. I remember the excitement of the annual visit to my grandparents, as they lived quite far away and we/they could not visit often, We would all rush out of the car, next journey after a long flight, and I could smell lunch cooking and the lovely smell of baking as my grandfather opened the front door to us.
