Jacob is the only one who can protect us all from a vengeful lunatic.

But Jacob’s a tiny sixth grader who’s scared of his own shadow. And his only known talent is hiding.

A misfit in his own home, a boy out of place in his own skin, Jacob has been hiding all his life–in his head, or behind his only friend.

His kind of different just isn’t accepted.

He thought hiding would keep him safe. But he was wrong.

For Jacob’s hiding has buried more than one truth, more than one secret. Including a destiny and a duty that are his to fulfill.

And a powerful talent. One that could doom his people.

Or save them…if he can find the courage to stop hiding from the thing that terrifies him the most–the truth about who he is:

A boy who likes boys.
A boy with a destiny foretold in an ancient legend.
A boy whose love could save us all.

Review: As Jacob celebrates his twelfth birthday his secret path is about to be revealed, the heritage that has been hidden from him is about to erupt before him and he will have to be brave to face the challenges before him. Jacob has to face the truth about himself and admit to his best friend his secret if he is to keep the love that he discovers.

Jacob, King of Portalia is a wonderful fantasy story and although it’s main characters are pre-teens it can be enjoyed by any age. Jacob has been struggling with the truth about his sexuality, the area he lives in isn’t gay friendly and Jacob is terrified he will lose his only friend Sammy. During the weekend of his twelfth birthday something amazing happens and Jacob and Sammy discover a world they never knew existed, a world where Jacob is needed to save them. On their journey Jacob discovers many secrets and a family he never knew he had, memories start to emerge and Jacob finds someone who has always been special to him, but danger lurks and the only one who can save them is Jacob, a twelve year old boy who hasn’t grown into his ears yet.

This is a fantastic story of a great adventure for one small boy as he discovers his heritage and the truth of what happened to his father and his own role for the people of his kingdom. Jacob has to face his fears in more ways than one as he discovers his powers and he meets a boy, Milokah, who makes his soul dance. This story is more than just facing down evil and saving a kingdom, it’s about a young boy also coming to terms with how he feels about another boy and accepting not just how he feels but how other people will view him as well. It’s about embracing everything that he is and being true to himself and having the courage to do what he must even if it means loss.

I really enjoyed this story and thought the characters were superb, the story was well written and flowed wonderfully. The dangers that were faced fit in perfectly for the young characters involved and the personal struggles that Jacob had were the kind that most gay children face as they discover their sexuality. This story while aimed at a younger audience can be fully enjoyed by an adult as well; think along the lines of ‘Harry Potter’ where it can be enjoyed by parents and their children… point in fact my twelve year old son wants to read it but his lordship has to wait till I can get him the paperback 😉

I recommend this story for those who love fantasy, discovering heritages, wonderful characters, brilliant world building, a young love being discovered, facing dangerous foes, rescuing a kingdom and an ending that will lead to more.

  2. Nice review, I love fantasy stories and this sounds an interesting story I would love to read. Pretty and scary cover at the same time as well, it has so much of a story to tell itself.
