We chat with Sam about spanking!

Q: In your novel Making Men, a few chapters contain discipline scenarios, but overall it is not a book about bondage or discipline. Why the detour into that area?

A: It’s not a detour. This is a book about character building. Discipline in the abstract certainly builds character, and it’s said that actual, physical discipline, that is, corporal punishment, also builds character. You learn to endure humiliation, let it go and move on. A useful life skill. That is why corporal punishment features prominently in public and domestic punishments and in initiations. (Not that I advocate it; I’m just saying what it is supposed to do theoretically.) So I see a connection between my characters’ disciplined, ambitious approach to fucking and Kevin’s focus on stringent corporal punishment scenarios. The sex and punishment are both challenges to build manhood. It is important, though, that Kevin ultimately gives up corporal punishment. He stops receiving and stops giving, and he makes it clear why. After that, corporal punishment is still linked to the frat house, a much less forgiving context than Tony’s and Kevin’s threesome with “the boy.” Kevin comes close to disciplining the boy physically, but he relents. He prescribes instead a spiritual course that is even more challenging. The boy agrees but then rebels. He visits the frat instead and finds it hot, but not warm, like his relationship with Kevin and Tony. So he comes back to them.

Q: Were you spanked as a child or adolescent?

A: Barely at all. No punishments or initiations or anything. I had a dread of it and a fascination with it. When my Kindergarten teacher gave a boy a birthday spanking the first week, I was horrified and spent the next three months, till my own birthday, dreading that this day I had been taught was special would be an occasion for humiliation, to which I was very sensitive. My parents must have written or called the teacher, because it never happened. Meanwhile, they tried to convince me it was harmless. Then the day came and…nothing. Later, in high school, someone recommended the English Speaking Union exchange program to me, but, aside from money issues, I wouldn’t go because of my dread of canings (I specifically believed I would be caned and ostracized for things I didn’t do) and also getting beaten up or disciplined by fellow students. I stayed totally clear of frats in college. But when I discovered spanking porn in my twenties I was all over it. I longed to own the whole scenario, to be top and bottom. Maybe I was role-playing that teacher and myself, over and over. I still like spanking porn. I like to see masculine guys get spanked. The vulnerability, the helplessness and breaking down, especially if they are stripped bare. A related oddity: I cannot deal with capital punishment, either, including movies or books. I will never watchDancer in the Dark again, and I barely made it through Tale of Two Cities.

Q: Where do you look for your spanking porn these days?

A: I don’t subscribe anywhere. It’s a waste of money. There’s enough free porn in all genres to turn me on as often as I need. That said, I like Spanking Central, even if it’s a repetitious and fastidiously nonsexual. I also really like Reluctant Young Men, because the guys are straight and kind of scruffy. I like seeing a straight guy stripped bare and put in his place. I also like British Boys Fetish Club. I’m not a huge fan of Spank This, except for the videos with Paul Pratt as the top. He’s amazing. Gay Spanking Clips, being an anthology site, has the best variety, especially if you like sex mixed with your spanking, which I sometimes do. But I also side with Cliff of Spanking Central: casual glimpses of a victim’s soft dick are quite compelling. It enhances their vulnerability. One of the problems with hard-ons is they hold off vulnerability. I like to see men vulnerable, so I like to see them soft, whether in a spanking context or regular photos. Or in life! I like sitting around bullshitting after sex and looking at the guy’s soft dick and exposing my own.

Q: Do you get involved in spanking scenarios in real life?

A: Absolutely—as top and as bottom. I have not devoted a huge amount of time to it—I’m too busy writing!—so my pain threshold is low. I can’t really take a whacking the way I’d like to. Also, unless you are continually involved in a spanking community, it’s hard to find guys who want just what you want. Discipline fixations are very specific, and there are very few fearless bottoms. I’m not brutal, but I do like to give a good swat. Guys are squeamish, though. They think they “might like to try it,” but you get them over your knee, they can’t see you, their behind is vulnerable, and pain frightens them. A lot of guys are scared of role-playing. I understand this. But facing those fears in the context of consensual corporal punishment can be character-building. Unfortunately most guys, top or bottom, don’t think that big. Still, I have had some hot scenes. I remember this one super sweet, adorable guy, about 25, and he’d being doing it since he was 15 or 16. Which is rare. He knew just what he wanted, and he could take a lot of it. After, he just wanted to be held, for a long time. He was very special.

Q: What is one special, recent spanking scenario that you might tell us about?

A: I connected with this guy a few months ago who really knows in detail what he wants and is not the least bit afraid. He wants to be punished for being a slut—spanked hard and fingered roughly. No inhibitions. My favorite thing was how he wanted me to come. After spanking his bare ass red, I put him belly-down on the bed, straddled him on my knees and shot my sperm on his red ass-cheeks. I felt so powerful. I felt so appreciated as a man. Semen has a lot of real significance beyond being a means of reproduction. That’s another theme in Making Men: the spiritual meaning and power of semen, and the way “seed” is “planted” in one man by another. And something real is created and grows. It took me a long time to come to the idea that my semen is as powerful and important as the semen of a guy who makes babies. Making Men is, I guess, my statement of that.

Q: You’ve talked elsewhere about your celebrity sex fantasies. How about your celebrity spanking fantasies?

A: My major celebrity spanking fantasy is the same as my major celebrity sex fantasy: Daniel Radcliffe. He just seems so courageous and open and like he’d embrace any intense sensation. I’d like a whole afternoon with him to try everything. I’d spank him and then change up and be super, super tender and gentle, cradling him and telling him how sweet and beautiful he is. Then fuck him really deep. Then there’s a whole other side to spanking which is spanking games: spank poker, spank Scrabble, etc. You can adapt almost anything. For that kind of adolescent bravado thing I’d choose James Norton. You can just imagine him grinning and blushing and playacting reluctance and all that 16-year-old-boy stuff. When it came time for underpants down, he’d blush and turn away and try to cover his dick, which would be adorable. He’d get an erection anyway, and it would become harder and harder to cover it up, so he’d blush even deeper and say, “Oh, what the hell?” and take his hands away and just let it stand free and…whew!!

Q: Indeed! So, did you ever play any spanking games? Did you win?

A: Yes, spank Scrabble, and yes, I did win. I was better at Scrabble than the other guy; his butt was getting real sore real fast! So to even things out, we said when there were ties, he’d spank me. We used a hairbrush and it hurt a lot. Hairbrushes are my favorite, I think. He was very well-endowed so I had a great time going down on him, too. We were in this cheap hotel, with the shower down the hall.
