Live Interview with Emily Moreton

Pixie: Hello to Emily Moreton who is joining us today for the Dreamspinner Daily Dose with her newest release Never Let It Go, hi Emily.

Emily: Hi there, how’s life?

Pixie: Pretty good, there’s actually some sun 😀

Emily: I know – not sure what to do with it!

Pixie: Enjoy it while we can, it’s our summer!

Emily: Tell me about it. This is a very British conversation isn’t it, talking about the weather?

Pixie: *Snigger* It will throw the American’s off LOL

Pixie: Emily your contribution to the Daily Dose is Never Let It Go why don’t you tell our readers a little about it.

Emily: It’s about a young army officer, sent home after being injured, and waiting for his partners to come home for him.

Emily: And I’m totally blanking on his name, that’s embarrassing!

Pixie: *cough* Will *cough*

Emily: Thank you! I remember Ade and Isaac at least 🙂

Pixie: 😀 Hmmm a threesome and all three were in the army?

Emily: Yep-I imagined that was how they met and got together, though that didn’t make it into the story.

Pixie: Did you have the idea for Never Let It Go before you heard of the Mended submission call or did it form after?

Emily: Definitely after- I struggle to come up with ideas out of nowhere. But the mended call was right up my street – I love hurt/comfort as a reader and a writer

Pixie: You did a great job of getting the hurt/comfort across, you really feel for Will’s situation. The psychological difficulty he had was really well written, did you research or was it a more personal experience?

Emily: A little of both – my first girlfriend lived in Germany, which helped with the distance stuff, but the rest is research from years in Stargate fandom

Pixie: You do mean for the original Stargate SG1 because they were the best! Jack O’Neill, Daniel Jackson, Teal’c and Sam Carter whoop!

Pixie: erm yeah ignore that LOL

Emily: I have to admit I shipped Sheppard from Atlantis and Mitchell from new sg1, sorry

Pixie: Ah well that is perfectly understandable, they are smoking!

Emily: Very true… And I’ve pretty much been writing about military boys ever since

Pixie: Military men are hot, there’s just something about a man in fatigues 😉

Emily: No argument here 🙂

Pixie: Now this next question is just a touch off base but you’ve written Never Let It Go in an American setting, why not a British setting?

Emily: I think partly habit writing US settings, and I think I know more about the US than UK military at this point

Pixie: Do you think you could give the readers a little teaser, just a couple of lines?

Emily: Here’s a little bit from Ade and Isaac, calling to let Will know they’re coming home…

Emily: “Hey, Will.” Isaac, sounding warm and pleased and not at all like he was calling with bad news. Will breathed again, relief flooding him so fast he felt shaky with it. “Sorry we missed you”—in the background, Ade said something Will couldn’t catch—“but we wanted to tell you…. The unit’s being recalled, just heard it this morning. We’ll be stateside early next week. They’re confirming the exact date tomorrow. So—”

A brief scuffle, then Ade’s voice picked up: “So change the sheets, clean the bathroom, get rid of any one-night stands, you know, the usual.” There was a beat of silence. Then Ade said softly, “We’ll see you real soon, babe. We miss you.”

Pixie: Oh that bit is really sweet. 🙂

Emily: Much appreciated 🙂

Pixie: Now why don’t you let the readers know where to find you?

Emily: I’m on Facebook, obviously, and I blog at emilyjmoreton.wordpress.com.

Pixie: Great, now I have to ask, will we be seeing Will, Ade and Isaac again in the future? And what have you got planned for the future?

Emily: I like the three of them a lot, so they may well turn up again. In the meantime, I’m working on another story for the same publisher, about a printer who acquires a print imp and develops a huge crush on him

Pixie: Ohhh so a paranormal/fantasy, I will have to keep an eye out for that.

Emily: I keep driving by a pin called the print devil-it was begging to be used in a story

Pixie: Before we go is there anything you’d like to tell the readers and fans?

Emily: If you like uniforms, I’ve got a story coming out with Torquere Press on Wednesday, about a stripper who falls for a cop 🙂

Pixie: Oh I am so getting that, I have a soft spot for cops LOL

Emily: Me too-too much watching the bill as a kid!

Pixie: Ah The Bill, it got into the blood. And now I have one of my very own LOL

Emily: 🙂

Pixie: Emily I want to thank you for coming to chat with us today and to wish you good luck with your Daily Dose Never Let It Go.

Emily: Thanks very much, and thanks for having me 🙂

About Emily

Emily Moreton has been writing since she was a child, when her stories mostly involved her and her sister saving the world (or at least the back garden). Since then, her writing has developed somewhat, and she’s published several short stories, only some of which have included saving the world, and has been nominated for the Push Cart awards. She now lives in Bristol, where she works four jobs, and spends most of the rest of her free-time volunteering at the local concert hall.

Blurb: After being seriously injured in an explosion, Will Jones is sent home from Afghanistan—alone. Struggling with the physical and psychological effects of his injuries is hard enough without worrying about the other two-thirds of his threesome, Isaac Andrews and Ade Drew, who are still on assignment. When Will hears that their unit is being recalled to the US early, it should be good news, but Will knows how quickly things can go wrong. He’s not willing to trust until he can lay eyes— and hands—on the men he loves.

Review: Will is recovering from the injuries that sent him home from Afghanistan, suffering from the physical and psychological effects of a roadside attack he has a routine set up that helps him cope as he worries about his two partners who are still in Afghanistan. Learning that Ade and Isaac’s unit is on its way home should be a good thing but until Will sets eyes on them and can see for himself that they are safe he can’t help but worry.

This is a great little story that packs a lot of emotion into such a small package. Will suffers with PTSD along with a broken arm and leg, he has nightmares and flashbacks about an attack he can’t remember and while he is making good progress in therapy the worry he has for his lovers always lingers. When he gets the phone call from Ade and Isaac letting him know they are coming home he should feel relief but the worry won’t go away till he knows they are stateside and safe in his arms.

I really liked this story and the emotional impact of the storyline. Will not only has to deal with the trauma he has gone through but he also has the constant worry that something will happen to one of his lovers, both of whom are still in Afghanistan. We see Will as he deals with his everyday life, the nightmares and the flashbacks, we see him wanting to get his hopes up but the fear he still feels when he gets the phone call telling him of the units recall and then we see his unmitigated relief when they get home.

The emotions jump out at you and you can’t help but feel them alongside Will, an unexpected message which has you thinking of all the things it could be rather than bad news… listening to the message and the wisps of hope wrapping around him but the fear that something could happen before they come home. And then we see the phone call when he gets the news they are home and it’s powerful… that overwhelming relief. Ade and Isaac are wonderful in the very short time we see them and the comfort they offer Will is wonderful, they are home, they are with him and they love him.

I recommend this to those who love hurt/comfort stories that are emotionally powerful, where love stays strong through the fear, where even physical injuries are overpowered by the worry for others and where a homecoming is the greatest comfort of all.
