Scent of the Heart

(Shifting Needs 02)

Casey Scott grew up being told he’d never amount to anything, and despite the unwavering love and support from his best friend, Jake, the idea sticks in the back of Casey’s mind. When he discovers he has a unique destiny in an enclave where shifters and humans live together, he seizes the chance, wanting for once in his life to be someone special.

Tsvetok Yerokhin lost his parents to the evil ruler of the enclave when he was a boy. The responsibilities of raising his two younger brothers nearly overwhelmed him and self-doubt took over. When the new Alpha and his Protector arrive in time to save his life, Sev is grateful, but he’s even more shocked when he scents his mate with them.

Casey isn’t prepared for the feelings that sweep over him when he meets Sev, but he refuses to act on them because he’s straight. Still, there is something so alluring about Sev that Casey can’t help being drawn to him.

As the two explore the edges of their new discovery, an evil returns, determined to control the enclave or destroy it. The Alpha and Protector are powerless to stop it, but Casey holds the key to victory. If he can discover what it is, he has a chance to save them all. To be the hero.

Unfortunately, the hero has to be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, and for Casey that means losing his heart.

Hi Parker, I’m Pixie and I’d just like to thank you for stopping by today. I’m just gonna ask a couple of questions and I’ll be very gentle 🙂

What is for you the perfect book hero?

The one who knows that in the end he may have to sacrifice something to protect those he loves, and is willing to do it without hesitation.

When you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively ?

I used to think that I had it all in my head, but my characters often decide they don’t like the way it’s going, and take me in a different direction completely.

What inspired you to write the Shifting Needs series?

I am a HUGE fan of shifter stories. Silvia Violet is my idol (and even wrote a bear shifter named Will!) and I can’t get enough of her shifter stories (especially Tristan and Wes, who is HOT HOT HOT). I wanted to try my hand at it, and had an idea of how I wanted this world to be different from any other I’ve read. In my world, the Alpha isn’t a shifter at all. He’s completely human, because the shifters know that the Alpha needs to make decisions where he has no species loyalty. In this world, there has never been an Alpha and Protector who were mates, and it makes them even more powerful.

How many published books do you have?

Uh….One…two…three…

Including my Young Adult stuff, I think it’s about twelve.

How much of your own life and personality do you put in your work?

I like to think that most of my characters (except the psycho ones) have a little piece of me in them. Okay, maybe even the psycho ones. Even Haven (my upcoming story) has a little of me in him, and he scares me.

If you could be any fantasy or fairy-tale creature what would it be?

Bear shifter! No hesitation at all. Big, burly, powerful. Yeah, I’d like to be that, please.

If you could be a super hero what power would you want?

I actually have a friend who made a picture for me of a superhero when I said what his abilities were. Phobiac has the ability to turn a person into what they fear. Homophobe? Phobiac can make you into a gay person and you’ll stay like that until you finally come to understand the basis of your fear. A bigot could become a different nationality or race.

And holy hell, did you notice the size of my package? I just saw that.

Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.

Wiggle my ears. 🙂 (Yeah, it’s not that much compared to what others can do, but it took me a long time to figure out how to do it, and I own that skill now.)

If you could time travel would you visit the past or the future?

The future. I want to know if we ever get our collective heads out of our asses or if we go ahead and destroy ourselves.

Worms or Frogs?

My parents had a plot of land in Babcock Wisconsin. There was an old soda refrigerator there that I converted into a frog house. I loved my froggy friends. Every fall when we were ready to leave, I took them back to the lake and let them go.

Vampires or Werewolves?

Werewolves. All werecreatures. Bears especially. 😉

Slow and gentle or up against the wall?

I’ve been married twenty-six years. I have no idea what the hell you’re asking.

Thank you for answering our questions today Parker and much luck with Scent of the Heart!

Thank you so much for having me. (Whispers in your ear, tell me what the slow and gentle or up agains the wall means later.)

“This night is shot,” Casey mumbled. “Hakii, if you’re there, I’m sorry. I need to find him. I’ll try to be back as soon as I can. Oh, and if you’re not there, I hope you’re getting a damn good laugh at me talking to myself.”

The night air had chilled considerably. Casey threw on a sweater and hurried to the Alpha’s house. Before he could pound on the door, it swung open. Jake stood there wearing nothing at all.

“Oh god, my eyes.”

Jake sighed. “You’ve seen me before. A lot, if I recall correctly.”

“And every time I do, I remember that I need to create eye bleach.”

Jake faked a laugh. “Yeah, you’re hilarious. What do you want?”

“A guy came to my house tonight. His name is Sev, and I think he’s in trouble.”

All humor fled from Jake’s face. “What happened?”

Casey told him about the visit. “He…called me his mate. What the hell is that about?”

“Later. We’ve got to find him.”

In an instant, Jake transformed into a beautiful black jaguar. Zak came rushing to the door. “What is wrong?”

Before Casey could answer, Zak grabbed a heavy coat and squirmed into it. “Jake will track him. You will come with us.”

“Zak, he called me his mate. Why would he do that?”

“You worry about this now? I do not see where this matters. If you prefer, you may stay behind.”

Casey sobered immediately. “No, you’re right. I’m sorry.”

They tracked Jake as he hurried to the woods. When they heard him roar, Zak and Casey ran to the edge of the forest. Jake had transformed back to his human form and, man, was he pissed.

“Come out here, now,” he demanded.

There was no movement, but Casey heard a clicking noise, followed by the familiar stamping of feet.

“You spray me and I swear to the gods I will neuter you. Put your damn tail down and face us as a man, Sev.”

Review: This book is part of a series and must be read in order. After years of being put down by his father Casey really doesn’t believe that he deserves the faith that his mentor, Hakiim, had in him, he doesn’t believe that he will be the shaman that the enclave deserves but he will have to grasp onto everything he’s been taught if he is to face an enemy that is determined to destroy him. Sev has had a crappy life trying to protect his younger brothers, when the new Alpha and Protector take over he hoped things would be better but some attitudes are hard to overcome. Discovering his mate is the shaman is a shock, Sev has never been attracted to a man before but he knows the spirits are never wrong now he just has to convince his mate that they are meant to be… for Casey and Sev they are about to face their greatest challenge, but will their love be strong enough?

Oh this is a superb addition to the Shifting Needs series. The story starts where Protector of the Alpha ended and is from Casey and Sev’s perspectives and we see how both men struggle with discovering that their mate is male. Casey is still finding his way as the shaman and doesn’t have much confidence, his dreams are haunted by his mentor Hakiim and he feels like something is coming. Discovering that Sev is his mate shocks him and he doesn’t want to face the fact that his mate is male, he’d prefer to ignore it and find some female to settle down with. Sev is having difficulty with everything, he thought things would change but he’s still shunned for his past actions and one of his brothers resents him. Knowing Casey is his mate has him dealing with an internal struggle, he always thought his mate would be female but he finally accepts the spirits wisdom.

Casey is a fantastic character, he is loyal, loving and wants to do the best thing for everyone but when he faces having a male mate he struggles to accept it. Sev is incredible, he has done everything he can to protect and support his younger brothers against great odds and all he has longed for is someone to love him and though he struggles at first he quickly embraces having a male mate. Now that we have their relationship out of the way, let’s talk about the rest of the story, because Parker Williams really put Casey and Sev through their paces. Just as they are finding happiness in each other’s arms a great evil starts to affect the enclave and it’s up to Sev and Casey to fight the evil and save them all. An Evil spirit: check, a dangerous journey: check, rabid animals: check, a huge sacrifice: check, destroying pure evil: check and an incredible miracle: check.

This story is just filled with danger that just seems to keep being piled up, Sev and Casey face odds that just seem to be too hard to accept. The writing is fantastic, keeping you glued to the pages as we seek the happy ending we so wish for these guys and damn does Parker Williams make us pray for it. The storyline is just wonderful, it’s filled with difficulties and hope, danger and loss, love and happiness, sacrifice and miracles and fantastic characters. The world building is brilliant; you get a good feel for the surroundings and the situation that Casey and Sev find themselves in. The characters really are superbly written, not just Casey and Sev but Mikhail, Vadim, Zak and Jake are all well rounded and infuse this story with their personalities.

I recommend this story to those who love shifter stories, difficult mating’s, opening your heart to something different, danger, sacrifice, love, hope and a fantastic storyline with an incredible ending.

  1. Hey now, even after 26 years of marriage, it can be up against the wall….if that wall is flat parallel to the floor…

  2. Hello, Parker, and congratulations on the new release. It sounds really good 😉
