Searching for Shelter

(Sin City Uniforms 06)
by

Morticia Knight

Teen shelter volunteer Rich searches for love until Diego, from LVMPD Search and Rescue, finds him.

After declaring his love life officially dead, Rich wonders if maybe he should stick with his shifter book boyfriends instead. It’s not as if he has much free time to date anyway. Between working long hours at a coffee shop, guarding his sodas from his hygienically challenged roommates, and running the programming at the Vegas LGBTQ teen shelter he founded – how could there ever be space for love in his life?

Diego Espinoza enjoys taking his downtime from working Search and Rescue, at the Lucky Cup coffee shop. He can set up his laptop, peruse good sport climbing spots and observe the blond barista he’s been pining over for a while. He imagines that the pretty boy has more offers than he knows what to do with, so it takes Diego time to work up the nerve to approach him.

Rich isn’t so sure about the rough looking Diego – even if he’s always thought he was hot – but once he decides to gives Diego a chance, there’s an immediate heat and connection that takes him by surprise. As they learn more about each other and try to find the way to a future together, strange and scary things start to happen.

It isn’t until Rich is injured in a bizarre accident that it becomes clear that there’s someone out there who not only doesn’t want Rich to find love – they want him dead.

Rich took a deep breath to put his proper customer service face on before he unlocked the door.

“Good morning, sir. Sorry to keep you waiting.” Rich’s Ken doll smile hadn’t seemed to impress Espinoza very much. He merely eyed Rich with a smirk before taking a brief stroll with his gaze down Rich’s body then back up again.

Oh please.

Pretending he had no idea what tall, dark and blatant was up to, he strolled briskly back to his station behind the counter.

At least there’s a solid barrier between me and his most certainly grabby hands.

“Shall I get you your usual?” Rich even had his ‘I’m so interested in helping you’ voice at its absolute best.

Espinoza locked his deep brown eyes on Rich’s and Rich inhaled a bit too fast. He pressed his lips together, trying to swallow even though he had no spit. It wasn’t as if he didn’t think the guy was hot, Rich just thought he seemed more like a player than a dater. Rich had already decided—once he’d started up the LGBTQ program at the shelter—that he wasn’t going to waste his time running around with guys unless they were serious. Between waking up at four a.m. five days a week to work an eight-hour or more shift at the coffee shop, then taking any other shift he could get to pay the bills – plus his time at the shelter – he just didn’t have time for any nonsense.

“Um…” Rich had to clear his throat so he wouldn’t squeak. “Are you…I mean…” Why is he just standing there staring at me? “What can I get you?”

His tone had been anything but professional. It had sounded more like he did when he was trying to chat up a guy he liked and was failing miserably at it.

“That’s better.”

Rich tried not to do anything stupid such as fall in a heap on the floor. Espinoza’s voice was deep, rich like the most decadent of chocolate. All Rich could picture when Espinoza spoke was how glorious it would be to have someone so thoroughly male wrapped around him.

Espinoza leaned against the counter, angling his body toward Rich. It put him on edge that much more.

“I was thinking I might change it up this morning.”

“Sure.” The desire to clear his throat again was there, but he fought it off. He unconsciously did it anyway. Dammit. “Okay. What can I get you then?”

He’d spoken it in his regular guy voice. It wasn’t that it was an unfriendly one, it just wasn’t ‘chipper’. There was no point in pretending anymore when it was obvious that Espinoza was onto him.

“Your agreement to have dinner with me.”

Are you fucking…?

Rich gave out a snorting chuckle. “Sorry. That’s not on the menu.”

Espinoza hadn’t flinched. “Too bad. Best thing here.”

“My agreement is the best thing here?” Where do these guys come from?

“I’d be honored by anything you agreed to.”

Rich let out a defeated sigh as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Um, look. You seem like a nice guy…” How many times have I said that in one lifetime? “But I’m not really dating right now, I’m very busy.”

About Morticia

Morticia Knight spends most of her nights writing about men loving men forever after.

If there happens to be some friendly bondage or floggings involved, she doesn’t begrudge her characters whatever their filthy little heart’s desire. Even though she’s been crafting her naughty tales for more years than she’d like to share – her adventures as a published author began in 2011.

Once upon a time she was the lead singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She currently resides on the northern Oregon coast and when she’s not fantasizing about hot men she takes walks along the ocean and annoys the local Karaoke bar patrons.

Review: I’ve wanted this story for a while now, being a fan of the series and having read every book, I see Rich in the background and have eagerly waited for his time to come. Rich may be young, but he has a good head on his shoulders. He volunteers constantly at the shelter, takes classes at the local college and works full-time at the Lucky Cup Coffee Shop.

His schedule doesn’t leave much time for dating but when he does, one disastrous date after another leads Rich to consider swearing off men for a while. That is until the hot guy that Rich can’t help but notice almost daily at the Coffee Shop finally asks him out.

Diego loves his job as part of the Search and Rescue unit for LVMPD being the outdoors type of guy. He even spends his off time hiking and climbing, mostly because he doesn’t have a man in his life. Diego has a sour taste in his mouth as well from past relationships, but there is something about the beautiful blonde at the Coffee Shop that has not only caught Diego’s eyes, he makes Diego want so much more than a one night stand.

These two definitely move fast, but it’s the attention to details that made their instant connection okay with me. Diego goes out of his way to woo Rich. Compliments, dates, conversation, and oh boy can the man kiss! Rich can’t breathe, much less think, when Diego lays his lips on him. I think what I enjoyed most about the relationship between these two was their conversations.

Diego especially always paid attention to everything Rich said, which was new to Rich and took some getting used to, but the way they were able to confide in each other from the start, to be a shoulder for each other when they had a bad day. This happened to them both in the story. I just loved that the relationship wasn’t all about sex. That being said, the sex was fantastic! Passionate, playful, tender and rough. When these two went at it I had to wipe the steam off my kindle.

Fast paced and completely engaging with a little bit of suspense for good measure. If you are a fan of the series, Knight’s work, men in uniforms, or just a hopeless romantic… you’ll love this book too.
