Daniel A. Kaine Slasherazzi Blog tour

Inspiration for Slasherazzi – Guest Post by Daniel A. Kaine

Hi everyone. Thanks for having me as I kick off the Slasherazzi blog tour. A few people have asked what made me want to write this story, so I figured that would be as good a place as any to start.

The whole idea began back in 2010. I’d recently finished writing the first Daeva book, and I was complaining on the NaNoWriMo boards about needing something to write. That was when a good friend offered me a prompt in the form of a single sentence. Her task to me was to write 1,000 words. The original sentence has been lost over time, but it was along the lines of ‘I stood above the body, clutching the knife in my hand’.

That one sentence could have gone in so many directions. Who were these two people? What motive did the man have for being there with a knife? Were they enemies, or friends?

I’ve always been a big fan of crime shows. Some of my favourites are Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), Criminal Minds and Dexter. There’s something absolutely fascinating to me about the darker parts of the human mind. What drives people to commit these horrible acts of violence and sadism?

I’m of the firm opinion that everybody has the potential to become a serial killer. Given the right circumstances, any of us could develop that primal urge to kill. I’m sure we’ve all had not-so-nice thoughts about another person before. We say we’d never actually carry out those desires, but the fact remains that we still thought about it. What if something in our past had been different and fundamentally changed our psychology? What if that something could still happen to us and those inhibitions snapped like twigs, giving way to the dark desires.

So, given my fascination with serial killers it came as little surprise that I went down the route I did. But there are so many types of killers out there. I needed a way to make him different from other killers. Something that made him darker.. more twisted than the average killer. After much deliberation I came up with a signature for him. I won’t spoil the book by telling you what that signature is, but once I had that key point figured out the writing really began.

I posted a 1,500 word chapter on the NaNoWriMo boards the following day. The responses to that short piece of work were fantastic–a mix of praise and shock–and so I decided to take the prompt one step further, developing it into a full length novel.

It has taken me almost four years to write the story, due to hitting writing blocks, real life intervening and taking over, and other projects taking the lead. Despite this, it was definitely my favourite book to write. I’ve had such fun getting into a serial killer’s head, and writing the characters. And I hope everyone who picks up the book enjoys it too. Just be warned… it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway and visits the other blogs to gain more entries. Also I’ll be running a second competition for the second half of the blog tour, so you have two chances to win. You can find more details on the tour stops at my website, which I’ll link below. For now, I’ve prepared a small excerpt for you to whet your appetite, featuring our main character Alex, and his work-partner at Tampa Homicide, Tanya.

The glass doors swung inward, and the cool breeze of the station’s air conditioning was a welcome relief from the hot, angry roads of Tampa. I strode inside, past rows of desks where groups of officers sat working on reports or talking about the latest cases. As I walked past, Officer Grady lifted his head and gave a quick nod.

“Hey, Beckman. Thought you were supposed to be on a day off,” he said.

I gave him the finger, and he snickered. Beyond the initial hub of activity, near the far wall closest to the kitchen area, was Tanya’s desk. She sat at her computer, flicking through various Internet pages.

“Find anything?” I asked, peering over her shoulder. She gasped, placing her palm on her chest.

“Jesus Christ, how many times have I told you not to sneak up on me like that?” she said, then paused a moment before continuing. “More times than I can remember, that’s how many. Hope I didn’t interrupt anything between you and lover boy. I swear you’re better off away from him anyway.”

“Tanya,” I growled. “I don’t need another lecture on relationships.”

“Apparently, you do, because you keep falling for him hook, line and sinker. That boy’s only out to use you so he can further his career.”

“He’s not like that,” I replied, more to myself than anyone else. The fact that he had shown up again now, just as another body had been discovered, did little to abate the doubts in my mind. I wanted to believe so badly that Vince wasn’t that person, but he certainly didn’t make things easy for me. “So what have you managed to dig up on our vic?” I asked, attempting to change the subject.

Tanya gave me a hard look before turning back to her computer. She opened up one of her Internet tabs.

“Facebook?” I arched an eyebrow at her. “You’ve seriously been browsing Facebook?”

“Why not? Most people don’t bother making their profiles private. I found out a few interesting facts about Mr. Pearson. For starters, he spent a lot of time looking after his farm on here.”

I shook my head, grimacing as I did so. “God, I hate those farms. Anything useful?”

Tanya grinned. “Oh, yes. It seems he wasn’t too popular with some of the locals. Three months ago, a member of his congregation accused him of molesting her six-year-old daughter.”

“Anything come of the allegations?”

Tanya shook her head. “When questioned, the daughter denied the claims. There was no evidence to suggest there was a case, so it was dropped. However, our vic made a lot of enemies that day.”

I scratched at my chin as a number of possibilities floated through my mind. This kill was different from the rest. Why? Was our killer changing, or did it have something to do with the victim? Maybe this one held some sort of significance to him. But more than that, besides the physical similarities between the victims— they were all male and in their thirties—we now had a link between two of our bodies.

I opened my mouth to speak when Tanya butted in. “I know what you’re thinking. Five victims, and two of them were accused of child molestation.”

“And with the way he’s leaving their dicks, I’m willing to bet he was a victim himself once,” I said. “It’s like he’s playing out a fantasy, getting revenge on his abuser.”

“Yo, Beckman.”

My thoughts stopped in their tracks as three people came to a halt at the side of the desk. I took a deep breath, fighting back the anger that seemed to burn through my veins at merely hearing that voice. Fernando was a small Hispanic man who joined the homicide team around the same time as me, and since then, had taken it upon himself to make his feelings about my being bisexual known to me and everyone else around us. As always, his lackeys were with him, two uniformed officers who shared his bigoted opinions.

“What do you want?” I asked, attempting to keep my voice as calm as could be.

“Been looking for you. Heard you and that faggot journalist were seen together at the park this morning. You’re giving the rest of us a bad name, you know? Bad enough that you’re sleeping with the enemy, but you gotta let the whole world see on camera what a fucking queer you are? Man, it makes me sick.”

Any attempt at self-control then was lost. I locked my fists around the collar of Fernando’s black pinstriped shirt and pulled him in close, my heart beating wildly against my chest. Despite his small frame, he continued to glare up at me, the tobacco on his breath catching my nostrils.

“Shall we see how cocky you are when this fag sends you to the hospital? I’m sure your friends would find that hilarious.”

His dark eyes widened momentarily. I opened my mouth when a hand came to rest on my arm.

“Alex, leave him,” Tanya said calmly. “He’s not worth it.”

I narrowed my eyes at Fernando before pushing him away into his two faithful henchmen. As much as I really would have liked to teach him a lesson, Tanya had a point. The satisfaction of wiping the smug look from his face wasn’t worth the resulting investigations and disciplinary procedures that would be sure to follow. It was a damn close call, though.

Fernando straightened himself up, his lips curled and brow furrowed. “Maldito cabrón,” he said in a low voice, fully aware that the rest of the office was starting to take notice of us.

About Daniel

Daniel was born and raised in the Land of Rain, aka England, where he now lives with his four lovable furballs; Mik, Ash, Spidey and Flash. Originally trained as a Biology teacher, Daniel was unsure what to do with his life until he came across fanfiction for his favourite anime and decided to have a go at writing his own. To this day, he still cringes at the memory of the cheesy terminology he used.

When not writing, Daniel enjoys a variety of activities, including running, going to the gym, bondage, watching anime, and the mass-slaying of virtual monsters in the hopes of receiving epic loot. One day, he hopes to become a werepanther and invent chocolate that can be eaten all day without making you fat.

Review: I am not and have never been a fan of murder, mysteries and scary stories, but this story just called to me. I got home after working and decided to just start reading it and I could not put it down. It draws you in with the first line and keeps it all the way to the end. This story has so many twist and turns that will surprise you and an ending that will shock you. I have never read a book that made you feel like you were right there in the story.

Alex has been promoted to Detective recently. Him and his partner were working a really nasty serial killer. The press has started naming him the Slasherazzi. He was slashed them up and it felt like it was two killers. The killings were getting worse until one night a Detective he worked with was killed violently. At the time him and Vince were off again so when he went to a crime scene there was Vince. Soon it would be on again. Their relationship has always been rocking for the two years they were together. When Vince had stolen case information to make a name for himself Alex would end it. However Alex would always take him back. It seemed like it was always the case.

So when one of victim’s showed that he was alive and tortured then killed, Alex knew he had to up his skills. Then things start showing that he is the killer and he has to try to find out who is trying to frame him. Him and Vince work together to get to the end of it. It was getting way to personal. He had to find out how to stop the killings, keep his relationship stable and live to see the future.

Although I do have to admit that Alex and Vince are hot together, there is just something about the two that drove me up the wall.  They don’t trust each other or at least Alex doesn’t trust Vince, with reason though. When you can’t trust someone because of betrayal it should tell you something there. However you can’t help but feel sorry for Vince when he gets accused of things, but then again he wasn’t my absolute favorite character in this story. I have a soft spot for cops, not so much with reporters.

This story is absolutely awesome, although there are just a few parts in it that made it hard to understand. This story has a shocking end and it will leave you breathless. I love it and can not wait to read more of Daniel’s stories. If you love mystery, murder, suspense, action, two hot and sexy men, tender sex and surprise endings then this book is for you. I can guarantee that you will love this book.
