Excerpt

Tyler stopped the rental car at the end of the lane leading up to the cabin. The instructions had been clear; seemed like Sheriff Justin was used to explaining where exactly in the middle of freaking nowhere his cabin was.

The navigation put the cabin at least thirty minutes’ drive outside of Stanford Creek, and he considered going into town first to see the guys. But, no one was actually expecting him until the weekend, so he had a few days grace before he visited with Cody and Daniel, and he liked the idea of settling in the cabin and maybe catching up on sleep.

He needed that time, the space to just enjoy having no one following him around. The latest tweet he’d seen shared, by a user with the Twitter handle of something like TyBigFan, was that he’d been spotted at the Honolulu airport; no one had outright verified but there were no denials issued by the record label management.

Zee, however, asked that Tyler Hart be left alone to enjoy his holiday on the beach.

Zach simply posted a vague mention of wishing he could be surfing with his twin.

And that was it. To everyone that seemed to care so much about his movements he was in Hawaii and no one outside of close friends and family knew he was in Vermont at all.

No one expected him to be in Vermont. He hadn’t expected to end up in Vermont. Still, he was here now, and after firing a quick text to his brother, Ty pulled his bags from the trunk and locked the car.

The snow was thick; he doubted any kind of snow plow could make it this far off the I-91, and it was untouched for this cabin and the two others he’d passed on the way in. A familiar excitement spurred him on through the snow, and he loved the fact he was the first to stand on the fresh fall, his boots leaving deep footprints as he walked. There wasn’t a lot of snow in LA, or in San Diego where he’d grown up, and the wonder of all the white stuff wasn’t leaving him anytime soon. He trudged up to the cabin, his calves burning with exertion, and was pleased to see the final stretch of the path was actually cleared, snow in neat piles to either side. There was a key somewhere here; Justin had been specific about its location and he was looking for the third board from the right, but he didn’t need a key when the door swung open as Tyler put a boot on the first step up to the porch.

“Hey,” the voice said from the darkness of the doorway, and Tyler peered into the gloom.

“Justin?” he asked.

A tall man, solidly built man, in an off-white sweater stepped out of the doorway and onto the porch.

“The other brother,” the man said, and moved closer, gesturing to take a bag and hold out a hand at the same time. “Garrett.”

Oh. A few things spun in Ty’s head at that announcement. The gay brother, the one with the weird career. That was pretty much what he knew, he’d just never seen a photo of the guy, and boy, he wished he had.

That was one nice-looking man as the welcome party.

“Coffee’s on,” Garrett announced. They were still shaking hands and Ty got an up close and personal look at amber eyes framed by long lashes, and a generous mouth curved into a half smile. Garrett had one of those jawlines that they used on romance book covers, all square and with a small dip in the chin, and he was at least half a foot taller than Ty’s five-nine.

The smile widened and Garrett looked down at their joined hands, which Ty dropped like a hot stone.

“Coffee is good,” he managed, and followed Garrett in, making sure to stamp his feet clear of snow before he stepped onto the wooden floor inside. There was a mat there, with other boots, and he slipped his own off, wriggling his cold toes in the thin socks. At least he had a reason for feeling shaky again; the chill was right inside his bones. He hovered by the door, concentrating on his breathing, willing away the tightness in his chest, and focused on just how good it would be here.

Plans included hiking, his walking boots were packed. Ty knew he’d need to layer the socks if he had any chance of surviving frostbite. He also wanted to just sit and think, and read, and not be near the Internet at all.

At least the inside of the cabin was warm, and when the door shut behind them it was like he hadn’t been standing in the snow at all.

“This is yours,” Garrett said, and indicated an open door past the minimalist kitchen. He went in, limping slightly, his gait off center, and Ty followed, placing the bags inside the door. The focal point was a solid wood bedframe, covered in dark blue blankets, and two bedside tables. There was no extra door in the room, so he assumed there was no attached bath, but that didn’t matter. The whole place was his; he could handle not having a bathroom he could stumble to in the dark from his bed.

“I took the other room, if that’s okay.”

Ty blinked up at the other man, whose expression went from smiling to concern to frowning. He knew he was staring like an idiot, probably with a look of horror on his face. “Other room” implied the other brother was sharing the cabin with him? What? He was told the place was his. Abruptly he resigned himself to finding somewhere else. No way would Justin’s brother want to share with a complete stranger, and hell, he wasn’t sure he was ready to see anyone else, let alone share with them.

“Shit. Justin clearly didn’t tell you,” Garrett said, and forced his hands in his pockets.

Ty was still stuck in disappointed mode and it was a moment or two before he realized Garrett was talking to him. “Who?”

“Justin, my idiot brother.”

Ty moved from foot to foot, the need to run overwhelming him all of a sudden. He forced himself to still, put his hands in his pockets just like Garrett, and straightened his shoulders.

“Tell me, that what… you’re…” He nodded to the other room, aware his idea of a quiet, peaceful space just for him wasn’t working out as he expected. Maybe Garrett didn’t mean that about the other room? Maybe he was just fucking with Ty. This was a joke, right?

“That I’m staying here for a while.” He looked expectantly at Ty, who shook his head. “At least until Christmas,” Garrett added.
