Sweetwater

by

Lisa Henry

Wyoming Territory, 1870.

Elijah Carter is afflicted. Most of the townsfolk of South Pass City treat him as a simpleton because he’s deaf, but that’s not what shames him the most. Something in Elijah runs contrary to nature and to God. Something that Elijah desperately tries to keep hidden.

Harlan Crane, owner of the Empire saloon, knows Elijah for what he is—and for all the ungodly things he wants. And Crane isn’t the only one. Grady Mullins desires Elijah too, but unlike Crane, he refuses to push or mistreat the young man.

When violence shatters Elijah’s world, he is caught between two very different men and two devastating urges: revenge and despair. In a boomtown teetering on the edge of a bust, Elijah must face what it means to be a man in control of his own destiny, and choose a course that might end his life . . . or truly begin it for the very first time.

Lisa Henry - Sweetwater 1

Hi! I’m Lisa Henry, author of Sweetwater! I’m touring the web talking about my inspiration, my writing process, and giving you a behind-the-scenes look at Sweetwater. And of course there’s a giveaway! You could win a title from my back catalogue, as well as a $20 Riptide gift voucher!

About Lisa

Lisa Henry lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

She shares her house with too many cats, a dog, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.

You can visit Lisa her website, at Goodreads, or on Facebook or Twitter.

Review: Elijah was orphaned in the wagon train west when his family died of Scarlett fever. He was in Dr Carter’s office and Dr took him in. He was left almost deaf and the town looks at him as an idiot though he is quite smart. Elijah isn’t as worried about his hearing affliction as he is what he calls another affliction.

Destiny or fate puts him in the sights of the town’s biggest saloon operator. Whenever Elijah delivers an envelope form the butcher he has Elijah come to his room. Elijah isn’t sure if he wants what Crane does to him but he knows deep down he needs it. He wants to resist the temptation of going to crane but can’t seem to.

Grady has had his eyes on Elijah ever since he first saw him at the butchers when he and his cousins were delivering stolen cattle. He can’t seem to get the young deaf man out of his mind even though it seems he is taken by Crane.

This is a good story. I loved the old west setting and felt as if I were right there with the characters. I loved the conflict and emotion. I really bonded with Elijah. My heart went out to him on multiple occasions. I loved the description of Crane and could visualize the Marlboro man each time his name was mentioned. I liked that he was a dangerous man but I felt a bit of goodness deep down. There were some very surprising twists and the story was unique and intriguing.

There were a couple things I didn’t like. The main one the very opening scene was very gruesome. I can see why it was used but I feel the meaning could have been conveyed without such graphic violence to the animal. I also would have liked more on Grady and his cousins.

Having said this, I loved this story and read it in one sitting. Once I got past that first scene I couldn’t put the book down. I will warn you that some of the sex could be considered dubious consent, but it’s not graphic or distasteful.

If you like stories of the old west, cowboys, rustlers, dangerous men, unique characters, handicapped characters, BDSM, masochism, twists and a surprising but satisfying ending this is definitely for you.
