Review: Wynn is an artist who caught something on camera that places him in danger. On the run, Wynn takes shelter in a small town and becomes close with the sheriff, Mick, but Wynn has a secret to hide and when his enemy catches up with him he has to disappear. Mick was intrigued by Wynn and when Wynn disappears, he hopes the man will return, but when Mick discovers Wynn’s secret he isn’t sure if he ever wants to see him again. Wynn returns to the small town having been unable to forget the sheriff, but just as the two men begin to reconnect an ex-lover of Mick’s causes trouble, and another man seeks revenge on Wynn. Can Wynn and Mick overcome the obstacles in their path to be together or will their pasts overcome their love?

This is a great story that has a touch of action with a paranormal thread through it. Wynn is a great character who lands himself in danger by catching something on camera that could put an end to his enemy. Mick is the local sheriff who helps Wynn out when Wynn needs a place to hide. Both men find themselves attracted to the other and they mildly flirt with each other before Wynn has to leave. But neither man can forget the other and they reunite, but Mick has found Wynn’s secret and they have a slight confrontation. Danger still lurks for them though and comes from unexpected angles.

Wynn and Mick’s relationship certainly has some ups and downs, it also has to overcome secrets and danger but they face it together and they make a wonderful couple. The storyline is really good and I really liked the simple shifter aspect; the story is of two men who both face danger falling in love and one of them just happens to be a shifter. The danger side of the story is great with it being kept pretty simple but happening a couple of times, the first time you know it is coming but the other two times it is unexpected and adds more excitement to the story. Wynn and Mick’s relationship is easy-going and nicely paced, they get to know each other before jumping into bed together and they are pretty hot when they eventually do.

I recommend this to those who like facing danger, a cheeky snow cat, great sex, wonderful characters, a great storyline and a sweet ending.

Review: Mitch finds himself adrift when someone murders his husband, Darrin, right in front of him on their tenth wedding anniversary, left puzzled and distraught he carries on with his life as the police hunt for his killer. As Mitch pushes on with his life, he is left bewildered when he is approached by a man claiming to know why Darrin died but then mysteriously disappears. Six months later Mitch discovers his husband may have left a clue to the identity of his killer and the killer wants it, it will take the combined effort of the police, Mitch, and his new friend Chad to piece together the puzzle before the killer strikes again.

This is a great story of mystery, recovering from a devastating loss, and developing new friendships. We join this story as Mitch and Darrin celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary, we are with Mitch as he is left bewildered and devastated by the murder of Darrin in front of him and we see the grieving process as Mitch pulls his life together and moves on. But, we also see how Mitch gets pulled into a mystery that is tied to Darrin’s teenage years, and he meets someone who could become more than just a friend.

I though this story was quite good, you get pulled in from the beginning, and you try to puzzle out the pieces yourself, but you never quite get it as more information and clues come slowly. Mitch is a character that you empathize with as he goes through the slow progress of getting back to his life. Mitch’s newest employee, Chad, is one that you watch closely as he pings your suspicion radar, but boy, you can’t quite tell if he is good or bad. The mystery of the murder is quite good and I liked how it was tied into Darrin’s past before he met Mitch, but I couldn’t help feeling as if it was a little ‘out there’ when I discovered the reason for the killers sudden killing spree. I liked how the story ended though with that spark of hope for the future.

I recommend this to those who love mysteries, characters who stay strong through devastating loss, moving on with your life but never forgetting the one you lost and a glimmer of hope for love in the future with a new friendship.

Review: Rome (Roman) and Jeff have maintained a secret relationship for four years before Rome’s new Captain begins giving him trouble, Rome is approached and offered a job with Vance’s covert ops team which would also allow him and Jeff to move and be out as a couple. When a job goes wrong for one of the team Vance sinks into the bottle but the knowledge that the perps are still out there forces Vance to clean up his act and with the help of his friends, he goes after those who caused his grief.

This is a story of two parts; the first part is about Rome and Jeff, while the second part is mainly about Vance and his struggles. Rome and Jeff meet when Rome moves cities to work at the Denver Police Department, Jeff is a neighbor and works for his father’s construction company and the two strike up a friendship, both men admitting that because of their respective circumstances they can’t be out and it isn’t long before both men fall in love and embark on a secret relationship, years later the opportunity to move cities and be out in their relationship comes up and it is an opportunity that Rome doesn’t want to turn down. Vance has sunk low, the pain he feels can only be numbed by alcohol and he is drowning in it just now, having a moment of clarity he begins to clean up his act, he has an enemy to hunt down and with the help of friends he makes his plans… but just how far will Vance go for justice and when does justice turn into revenge?

This book is more like two stories in one, in the first part we see the progression of Rome and Jeff’s relationship, from where they meet and become friends to their relationship progressing to more and then we have flashes of times through the next four years right up until they start their new life together. Then the story changes with Vance being the focal point and we follow him through a trying time as he also has to weigh what is best for him as he boarders on full-out revenge, with only his friends Rico and Roger to pull him back with coaxing words.

I must admit to liking this story even though I was confused as to the way it lay out, first we have all Rome and Jeff and then as soon as Phoenix comes into play we see Rome very briefly… I felt like Rome and Jeff’s story was cut off abruptly. Vance’s story is shocking and really makes you want to smack the crap out of the bosses of Phoenix… ‘The job needs to be completed’, that’s twice they have done that to him now. Vance’s story has soul-searching and plans for vicious revenge and it is only his friends that advise Vance that stop him from doing something that would later destroy him.

I will recommend this to those who love devastation and loss, determination and justice, new love and relationships and an ending that pulls at your heart.

Review: This is an action packed epilogue! You get to reunite briefly with several couples from the Winterfield series and see how they react under pressure. Turns out the robbers picked the wrong day to hit this bank, given that half the town’s gay population is held hostage leaving their angry and determined partners outside to foil their heist. This story contains gunfire, death, and heroic rescue, but a warning to those looking for it: no hot smex.

Then, through his online business, Pres reconnects with his friend, although Cary doesn’t know it is Pres. Will Pres, with the help of the woman with whom he is living, be able to let down his barriers and meet face to face with Cary or will his fears keep them just online friends?

Review: Preston has received some vague threats and some not so subtle threats when he decides to quit porn, but nothing is stopping him from changing his career path, until a vicious attack puts paid to any modeling career. Cary is frantic with worry when he learns Pres was attacked, but there is nothing he can do when Preston disappears off the face of the earth, and he carries on with his life with his increasingly possessive boyfriend. When Preston reconnects with Cary through his new online job, Preston doesn’t know if he will ever be able to face Cary again, and Cary just might discover some uncomfortable truths very close to home.

Well this is a story that is steeped in new beginnings, insecurity, and support. Preston is brutally attacked when he leaves the porn business, his attacker isn’t caught, and there is no proof that his ex-boss had a hand in it, but for Preston, his life seems to be over. Preston cuts off all contact and disappears and it is only through the persistence of his nurse, Tabby, who is also a good friend that he doesn’t disappear completely. Cary is gutted when Preston disappears, but realizes that he has to carry on with his own life, when Preston comes back into his life he is overjoyed, but it isn’t long before Preston’s attacker makes another move.

I did enjoy this story, but I felt that some aspects were played down, Preston’s attack was vicious and I was expecting him to have more fear because the attacker was unknown and never caught, but most of his concern was for how other people saw him, which is understandable especially as he was banking on his looks to become a model. Tabby was a very good character with her support and encouragement, making Preston take steps to join the world again. Cary is a good character who Preston loves, but Cary made it known he would rather be friends, now though Tabby makes Cary question his own feelings. I will admit to being a bit disappointed with the easily resolved ending because I was expecting it to be more tension filled especially because of the surroundings, but other than that, this is a well-written story with good characters.

I will recommend this to those who love a slight mystery, some great characters, a good storyline, discovering love and a happy ending.

Review: Jackie was exiled from his community and is forced to live on the streets. Struggling to survive, Jackie is taught the tricks of the street by Solo who takes Jackie under his wing. Jackie and Solo develop a friendship that seems like it could be more, but then Solo disappears and Jackie plods on with his survival. When Solo reappears, he has an offer for Jackie that Jackie doesn’t want to refuse.

This is a great story of two young men who meet while living on the streets. Jackie was tossed aside when he refused to sleep with his communities’ leader. now living on the streets of the city he is struggling to survive. Solo takes Jackie under his wing teaching him all he needs to know and a friendship develops between them, Solo doesn’t hang around though and they see each other in passing. When Jackie tells Solo, of his previous life, it gets Solo thinking and he disappears.

I liked this story for its simple storyline of two men struggling on the streets and trying to make their lives better. Jackie is a really nice character who has been dealt a rough hand and is now learning to live on the streets. Solo is a great character who ran away from home and is living off the grid. He has his own secrets and when he meets Jackie, it sets him to make some long-term decisions. They fit quite well together, but neither knows what to expect. His friendship starts out as support for another homeless man and Solo always manages to help whenever he can. Their attraction isn’t instant, but develops well. Solo’s secret is a surprise, but works well and their relationship jumps forward when neither of them has to worry about the streets and safety.

I recommend this to those who love struggling young men finding their way, discovering love in friendship and a happy ending that is quite pleasing.

Review: Randolph fled from the man he loves when an old adversary crawled out of the woodwork, thinking that if he disappeared his husband and son would be safe. Now, two years later, his adversary has upped his game and is targeting Leland and Grady as a way to get Randolph back to the city. Leland and Grady have continued with their lives’ in Randolph’s absence, their medical practice is flourishing, and then their new receptionist, Jeremy, convinces Grady to help out at the local shelter for street kids. But, then Grady is targeted by a stalker and Randolph calls in favors to protect the ones he loves. Can Randolph take down his adversary before he loses his family?

This is an interesting story of a man turning his back on his family to protect them from danger. Leland and Grady never knew the real reason behind Randolph’s disappearance and now two years later, it has come back to haunt them. Randolph thought his family would be safe with him gone, but he is now being proven wrong and it is a race to keep them safe. Grady flirts with the pretty private investigator, Megan, who is assigned to keep them safe, and Randolph and Leland have to see if their love has survived the two-year separation.

We enter this story with the everyday life of Leland and Grady as they manage their pediatric practice. They hire Jeremy, who in turn introduces them to a shelter for street kids. They have no idea they are the targets of a killer who wants Randolph dead. The mystery surrounding Randolph’s disappearance is cleared up for us quite quickly, so we aren’t left in suspense too long. Jeremy puts together the pieces of the vandalism and phone call and damn, but Edward Kendrick is mean for what he does next.

This is more a mystery/suspense than a romance and although there are a couple of kisses both m/m and m/f that is the extent of the sexual contact. the mystery is good, but I did question what was the point of Randolph disappearing to save his family in the first place, when everything that happen could have easily been put to rest two years earlier if he had just stayed and confronted his adversary. It’s still a good story and I did enjoy it, I just found it pointless for Randolph to have run off.

I will recommend this to those that love mystery, suspense, reuniting love, finding love, danger and a happy ending.

Review: Ezra is a private detective who is hired by the wife of a porn king, Maddox Fulton, who is missing and discovers that the man has been murdered. he is also hired to find who is leaving strange gifts on an older man’s doorstep and discovers the culprit, Gabriel, worked for the murdered man. Ezra is then hired to discover who the murderer is and it brings him into closer contact with Gabriel and his attraction to the man develops.

This story takes a step back from romance. Although there is a hint of it, and concentrates on Ezra’s investigations. Ezra finds himself in sticky situation when he is hired to find a missing man. He finds himself trying to find out the truth when the man turns up dead. But, with a list of people who hated the man, untangling the web of lies isn’t easy. Discovering that Gabriel is the culprit behind leaving gifts at another client’s father’s home is easy. Talking him out of doing it again, Ezra discovers his own attraction to Gabriel.

I enjoyed following Ezra through his investigations. his own admitted ‘stumbling in the dark’ guesses and I enjoyed seeing him connect with Gabriel. The mystery surrounding Fulton’s murder is good and I liked how it was set out although the culprit surprised me. Because, I had it set in my mind who it was and then, wham, we’re thrust into a situation with Ezra that boggles the mind. The tentative relationship with Gabriel is good and you can see that although the setting isn’t ideal they make a good first connection.

I will recommend this to those who love private investigators, danger, mystery and the beginning of a relationship.

PI Clive Frazier is called to the home of a woman whose daughters were kidnapped thirty years ago. One daughter was murdered. The other vanished. And now her mother has received a letter purportedly written by her just days ago.

At first reluctant to take the case, he agrees to attempt to find her, even though he knows it could upset his husband, police detective Teddy Radcliff. The reason: Teddy’s father was a prime suspect in the kidnapping.

Review: Clive is a private investigator who is hired to look into the disappearance of two girls thirty years before.  It’s a case he knows well, as his husband, Teddy, and his family was nearly destroyed because of it. Accepting the case is a chance to clear Teddy’s father’s name and Clive asks his husband for his help. Teddy has always had the specter of his father’s suicide over his head.  Helping Clive to discover the whereabouts of one of the girls who went missing might get him answers.  But, danger lurks as they dig into the past.

Ah, I enjoyed this story for its simplicity of relationship and its interesting mystery. Clive and Teddy are an established couple, together for over ten years, Clive’s a PI and Teddy a police detective.  When Clive is approached to take on a case where Teddy’s father was a prime suspect, he jumps at the chance to lay the past to rest. Teddy and Clive join together to find out what really happened thirty years before and to discover why one of the missing daughters has only now contacted her mother.

This is a well written story of a long-term couple who work together to discover the truth of the past. The storyline is great, investigating a thirty-year old case which leads to murder and mystery, but it also shows a wonderful relationship between Teddy and Clive. Raking over the past shows shoddy police work, casting doubts on what really happened. Discovering connections nearly forgotten and a new link to the present and putting the past away isn’t as painless as they had hoped. Teddy and Clive are brilliant, as you watch them together and see the love and support between them.  There’s no conflict or angst in their relationship which makes a lovely change and they have a very health sex life that is only alluded to *pout*.

I recommend this to those who love established long-term, still madly in love relationships, a great mystery, a touch of danger, laying the past to rest and a happy ending.

Product Link: https://spsilverpublishing.com/life-after-my-unfortunate-demise-ebook-p-1383.html

Review: Well, damn if this wasn’t a weird shorty and it started so well. what with the witty narration of Mark and his “Unfortunate Demise”.

The story is not complicated. Mark is dead for many years and because he has no idea who killed him he can’t move on. All he does is run the hallways and the offices of the building he was killed at, and although after life is pretty boring for him, it has its perks. He can freely ogle a young lawyer, Dixon, and have fantasies starring them. Until the day Dixon is killed.

It is then that things take a 180 turn and they discover that not only they are both into each other but their deaths are somehow linked. All they have to do now is prove their cases and “move on”. If only that was that easy and if only they had their heart into it.

I don’t know, as I said it started great, I was laughing with this short from first paragraph. Mark is a witty character and had a charming thing about him when this story started. But, then as the plot moved on, I found out that there was not much about it, as a plot that is. Pretty predictable, it had nothing to keep you really interested there, and it got pretty sappy in the end.

As for the characters themselves, though I did like Mark since I saw this “after death” world through his eyes, I had no connection at all with Dixon. Made me wonder in the end, beside him being hot and gorgeous, why they make such a “forever” decision.

Oh well, perhaps it’s just me and my poor ability to appreciate ghost stories, but this one was not a story I will go back to.

Review: PI Zane needs help tracking down a stalker and turns to profiler Axel for help, Axel asks Zane for help in exchange, to discover why his ex-lover who caused his blindness, has reappeared on the scene after ten years. Together they try to solve the stalker case and the ex problem and become close, when Axel becomes threatened they have to discover just who is the threat… the ex or the stalker?

This is a great story of a slow developing relationship as two men work together to get to the bottom of their puzzles. Zane is a PI who has had several gay men come to him for help concerning someone stalking them. Zane needs the help of a profiler to see if the cases are connected and to get a bead on the stalker and he turns to Axel for help. Axel is happy to help Zane with his case and in exchange he asks Zane to discover why his ex-lover is in town. The ex-lover who caused Axel’s blindness. As the two men work together, they come to like and respect each other and they embark on a slow relationship. A relationship that causes someone to be very upset.

I really enjoyed this story and the way that Zane and Axel decide to take it slow, building a relationship and not jumping into bed together straight away. Zane has a strange case of a stalker targeting gay men. The investigation part of the story is quite interesting and the connections that Zane and Axel discover are a great twist. But, I for one will say you will be surprised when you discover who the stalker is… really surprised. Axel’s problem of his ex-lover is a painful thing for him and when you discover his story it does make you wonder at the man Raoul was. But, amazingly enough, Raoul does begin to redeem himself somewhat.

So, I have to recommend this to those who enjoy sleuthing, slow romances, steamy kisses, a mystery to solve and a happy ending that is a good beginning for a relationship.

Review: Kenyon discovers Neal, a young boy, on the streets. Neal tells the tale that his mom has been taken and they were on the run from his father. Kenyon has to hand the sweet little boy over to Human Services and the caring hands of Teo. Kenyon and Teo are drawn together although they are opposites when it comes to relationships and they somehow make it work. Neal has dreams of his own which include both Teo and Kenyon, now both Kenyon and Teo have decisions to make.

This is a very sweet story that has a bit of danger, a touch of angst, but a lot of hope and joy. Kenyon has an instant connection to Neal when he meets the little boy in a stinking alley where Neal is hiding, waiting for his mom. It isn’t long before the story is told and Neal is taken in by Human Services as the police hunt for his mother. Sadly, she is found murdered and Neal’s father is now hunting for him. Kenyon and Teo are unsure if a relationship between them will work, but decide to give it a go. After a slight misunderstanding they take the plunge, but it isn’t long before they have to make a new decision about their lives.

I enjoyed this story and really liked how it progressed. Kenyon and Teo are two very different men; with Kenyon wanting someone to settle down with, while Teo has been like a butterfly flitting from man to man. The connection between the two men seems strong and recovers well after a slight blip. The sex between them is hot, but their connection goes far beyond the physical. Neal is a very sweet young boy who has a slight physic ability which makes the story much more interesting, although the appearance of Neal’s father is expected it was far different than I had thought it would be.

I loved how Edward Kendrick gave us an ending many years into the future, it was wonderful to see Kenyon and Teo’s relationship and their relationship with Neal during pivotal moments of their lives and to see how they had all grown together into a true family.

I recommend this to those who love how opposites attract, sexy men, cute kids, happy families, hot sex, a touch of danger and a very happy ever after.

Review: Roger doesn’t just work for Phoenix Rising; he is also a secret operative for a clandestine group who take care of problems that governments can’t touch. now his control (Robin) has approached Giuliana to join the group. Gregory gets a warning that an enemy from his past is looking for him and with the help of an old ally Rico, Roger and Giuliana they protect Daniella and confront the enemy. Robin makes it his mission to get Rico on board and before long; Roger and Rico have to confront their feelings, before one of them ends up dead.

This is a well written story that is written in Parts, so it is as though you get a series of stories from this complex group of people as they are drawn into the workings of the ‘old man’. It’s difficult to delve into the storyline, as although we have the main romance of Roger and Rico, there is also Giuliana who develops a relationship, secrets are revealed and enemies come out of the woodwork. We see the type of work that the ‘old man’ assigns and the type of people who are eliminated.

First off, let’s talk about the action; it’s good, really good. you never quite know what is going to come next or what type of assignment we are going to see next. Then there is the sexual tension, Rico and Roger are a very conflicted pair. They both hate each other, but something lingers behind all the hate and when Roger is hurt trying to prove himself, Rico questions his own actions. This is a suspense/action story that you don’t want to end, just because you want to see what the next mission will be and who is assigned it.

We don’t see much of Urbain and Con in this one, but they are there, especially when everything comes pouring out at the end. This story definitely leans more towards the clandestine actions of the security staff of Phoenix Rising, and questions that sneak up on you throughout the book are answered near the end.

So, all in all this is a well-rounded book of rescues, assassinations, explosions and discovering allies and enemies and I have to recommend it to everyone who enjoys all of the above, along with two men falling in love and Giuliana getting her happy ever after as well.

Review: When Paxton was given an ultimatum by his father, many years ago, he caved in and did what his father wanted. But, he had to give up Jordan. Now, years later, Jordan is back in his life as a friend and Paxton won’t let it go any further, because he still hopes that his wife will come back, even if it is for the sake of the children.

This is quite a good second chance romance. But, if I am perfectly honest, I got more caught up in the serial killer plot than the romance. *bows head in shame* Paxton gave up the love of his life to do what his father wanted. Now, after so many years and his wife’s disappearance solved, he can make a new start, hopefully with Jordan. Jordan is a teacher and has Paxton’s children in his class. They have a good friendship, but they don’t stray too far into unwanted remembrances that will bring forth recriminations.

Yes, Paxton is an honorable man now but he wasn’t very honorable when he allowed himself to be bought. He married a woman his father chose as part of a business deal and his father would continue to pay for his tuition and education. This hurt Jordan badly, as Paxton had always said he loved him, but now years later they are friends. Jordan is a lot more forgiving than me, but he still loves Paxton and now he and Paxton have a second chance.

Right. So, on to the part I really, really enjoyed. one of Paxton’s sons uncovers a finger bone while digging for a fossil. Paxton, a forensic scientist, calls in his brother-in-law, who is a detective and it is just the beginning as more graves are discovered. Identifying the skeletons is harder than they thought and finding a killer before they strike again is a challenge. Loved it, and the identity of some of the bodies is a surprise. The mystery is well written, and the way it ended has given me hope that there will be more in the future for this couple and the mystery will be fully solved.

So, I will recommend this to those who love second chances, forgiveness, realizing your mistakes, solving murders, intelligent kids and a happy ending.

Blurb: Tonio, an artist, is in self-imposed hiding after an attacker scars him both physically and emotionally. When the attacker reappears, Tonio seeks help from the handsome bodyguard Jonam. It falls on Jonam’s shoulders to keep Tonio safe, and in the process teach him to live, and perhaps love, again.

Tonio, an artist, is in seclusion after being viciously attacked by the lover of a casual acquaintance in an act of jealousy which scarred Tonio inside and out.

Tonio’s only contact with the world is his sister Jessie, who implores him to shed his self-imposed exile. When his paintings go on display at a gallery, Jessie convinces Tonio to attend the opening night and a party to be held in his honor.

Jonam, the handsome owner of a close protection service, offers to come to Tonio’s aid when Tonio’s attacker begins to make new threats. The question then becomes, will Jonam be able to keep Tonio safe, and in the process teach him to accept he is not defined by the scars he carries but by who he is inside? Only if he can, will Tonio be able to live, and love, again.

Purchase Link: https://spsilverpublishing.com/product_book_info/products_id/825

Review: Tonio is terrified that the man who attacked him before will come back to finish the job.  But, as time passes and he starts to feel relaxed enough to begin to live his life the phone calls start. Jonam has his own security firm and offers his help to Tonio to put a stop to the man’s torment.

A well written novella that I found to be quite enjoyable. Tonio is still recovering from the psychological effects after he was brutally attacked by a jealous boyfriend of a casual acquaintance and just when he has started to live his life in the simplest ways he starts to receive phone calls from a blocked number. Tonio is scared in more than one way not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well, Jonam starts to show him that some scares are only skin deep.

I liked this story for the slight suspense feel to it, Tonio getting caught up in a drama of another man’s relationship and that man’s boyfriend making Tonio a target instead of looking to himself as to why his boyfriend wants out. Jonam shows Tonio that he has begun healing from all his wounds. There is one sex scene between them is quite emotional and touching. I must admit that I didn’t feel a connection between the two men; I really couldn’t tell if there was an attraction between them when they first met or during the subsequent meetings until they were in Tonio’s apartment the last time.

There really wasn’t that much interaction between Jonam and Tonio, so we don’t get a good feel for Jonam. The epilogue was very sweet and I was glad to read a bit about their future and that Tonio seemed to have recovered fully from his attack.

I will recommend this to those who want some slight suspense, some hot sex, an emotionally scarred man, some angst and a happy ever after.

Review: Castien was cursed to silence as a punishment.   He might be a powerful mage, but because of the curse he is limited to when he can do some spells. Theirn is a thief and gets caught by Castien, but with the information he reveals he is enlisted into the group and also comes in handy when they need access to a castle. Castien and Theirn start to become close, but Theirn has some fears…at first.

There are two parts to this book or more correctly two adventures in one book.  The first one is where Castien and Theirn meet and help to get rid of an evil Lord.   and the second one show’s how their relationship develops as they set out to spy on a mage/prince. I must admit that I did enjoy this story and the world it was set in.   The characters were interesting and their reaction to each other was well written. The entire story was well-written; in fact and I am not being bias just because it’s a fantasy, honest!!

The action was really good and although we don’t see any sex, we do see the lead up which is at first filled with a misunderstanding. The development of the story is good and we do find out about both Castien’s and Theirn’s background and the characters are really sweet together later in the book.  I will admit here that there was one bit that niggled for me and that was the curse that Castien has.  It just seemed too awkward to be effective but you can make your own mind up about that.

So in all honesty, I have to recommend this to those who love fantasy, action, adventure, magic, elves, love, spies and a cracking mage battle near the end.

Reviewer: Enigma

Review:  This was an absolutely fabulous read.  It starts by following three gay men who awaken after a night of clubbing not being able to remember details of their night befores.  Intermingled is a police investigation, where gay men are turning up dead.  It was very Agatha Christie and I loved it.  I HAD to move to the next chapter to see who might have gone missing next.

In my mind, this book could be divided into three parts.  Unfortunately, I can’t put labels on those parts or I’d have to give away the whole story.  Suffice it to say, Edward Kendrick has penned a tale that is equal parts romance and suspense.  There is grittiness in this book that I think he was going for in some of his other work but didn’t quite achieve.

I’d also like to note that I really appreciated the inclusion of an HIV positive character, albeit one of the secondary characters.  Don’t worry, the guy doesn’t die or anything, but it was nice to see an author addressing the issue without getting all angsty.

I will say this:  The Beast Within is not a quick paranormal read.  There are no sexy werewolves or shifters coming to save the day.  The Beast could dwell in anyone.

If you are up for a well-written tale of intrigue, broken men coming to terms with life and death and more than one beautiful love story…this is a definite must read.

Chat with Edward Kendrick

Edward and I had an opportunity to chat over the weekend.  Below is the cleaned up version.  Please leave a comment about The Beast Within or any of Edward’s books.  He’d love to hear from you and is giving away a free copy of The Beast Within to one lucky commenter…might as well be you. 😉

Portia de Moncur Anyway, (actually questioned omitted to not give away plot)? How could you do it?  Not the normal happenings for your stand MM romance novel.

Edward Kendrick Humm. Because it had to happen?
For the drama? Because it felt right for the story?  I’m a pantser when I write. It just…happened.

Portia de Moncur I neared to have a heart attack and almost threw my Kindle. I think I’ve read all but one of your books. Is it me, or did you lean more towards suspense with this one? I have to admit the first third of the book had me on pins and needles.

Edward Kendrick I like writing suspense/mysteries. *smile* and no throwing Kindles. It tends to damage them *G*

Portia de Moncur Did you mean to have so little sex? I seem to remember you being pretty good with a love scene.

Edward Kendrick For me this was more about the relationships than the sex per se. And about the suspense too…

Portia de Moncur I loved the whole book and gave it a top review (to be published later this afternoon.) I liked the fact that the romance just kinda evolved along with the mystery. Which character popped into your head first?

Edward Kendrick Thank you….Now that’s a good question as to who was first. In my head it began as a mystery and evolved into being Vanni’s story somewhere along the line.  The three club men were the beginning, as in ‘who done it or who might be a victim’. Then there had to be the cop of course. But the more I wrote of Vanni, the more I saw him as the central character because he was ‘angsty’ for lack of a better word.

Portia de Moncur My only complaint would be that you didn’t really address Vanni’s tricking. It’s not like he needed the money.

Edward Kendrick And good point about why he tricked.

Portia de Moncur I think I liked Beast because it was different. Do you find MM romance churning out lots of sameness…or is it just me?

Edward Kendrick What I find is there seems to be an emphasis on ‘it’s not good if it doesn’t have lots of sex’ in the minds of some people. So I think, and it could be just me, that sex is thrown in so a book will sell.  Which makes for ‘sameness’.  And honestly at this point I don’t read too many, primarily because I don’t want to be influenced by them.  If that makes sense?

Portia de Moncur That makes a lot of sense. I write erotica and love steamy romance, but I also like stories that have more of a build up to the “good stuff”. I particularly take offense to the books that make all gay men seem like bed hoppers.

Edward Kendrick Boy so do I.

Portia de Moncur So what’s next?

Edward Kendrick I have one coming out in January from Silver. It’s my first stab at fantasy. It’s M/M too, titled ‘Mage of Silence’; Action, adventure, etc, etc.

Portia de Moncur Man you are really churning them out. And I for one love watching you grow as an artist.

Edward Kendrick Thank you. I really hope I am growing.

Portia de Moncur Last question. What is the Beast Within?

Edward Kendrick Oh boy. Good question. The inability to understand the other person and where they’re coming from. The inability to say what you’re really feeling. The inability to be honest with yourself and others. And of course the craziness in the killer.

Portia de Moncur Nice…

Portia de Moncur Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today. I’m not just blowing smoke when I say I really enjoy your work. As an aspiring writer, I take courage in the fact that publishing houses will take a chance of writers who push the boundaries of the known literary universe.

Edward Kendrick Thank you very much for having me, and for the compliment. As for publishing houses, I was very lucky to find Silver because I think they’re excellent at doing that.

Portia de Moncur Thanks again and now go get your coffee. 😉

Edward Kendrick LMAO. I will. And you do a very good interview. Not the usual ‘how did you get started’ kind. I like.  Again, thank you so much. It was fun.

Portia de Moncur Ditto…

Edward Kendrick And now………coffeeeeeee.  Laters

Review:  This was so not what I was expecting from Edward Kendrick.  There is a lot of sexual tension but not a lot of sex.  Which really surprised me, as his last book that I read, Everyone’s Man was dripping with sexual innuendos and steamy bedroom scenes.

Instead, this is a very well written story.  For Joey, it is love at first sight. And as much as Glenn would like to take Joey up on his subtle invitations, he is more concerned with keeping Joey safe.  There are guns and bad guys and two very horny men fighting their attraction for one another.  It was a bit of a stretch when Glen brought Joey into his lair and Joey barely blinked, but everyone is not a nosy control freak like me.

I loved the ending…kinda. Might have been interesting for Nate to fight a bit harder…but, since it really wasn’t his story…

This was a very enjoyable read.  Would make an excellent movie.  Tall, dark hitman willing to risk everything for the sweet tender criminal justice major…I’d pay $8 bucks to see them come to life on film.
