He thought it would be just like last year, with its endless bullying and recesses spent reshelving books in the library with his best and only friend Carleen. The sissy boy and the fat girl had bonded over their shared outcast status. But Carleen shows up filled with sassy confidence and declares they’re going to rule the school. By Christmas, the freaks and nerds would be the cool kids, and the mean girls and jocks would be the outcasts. Something had happened to her over the summer, but what?

And then, the two of them lay eyes on the new boy at the Academy. Doug has auburn feathered hair, veiny biceps, and green eyes the color of Sprite bottles. Plus, he’s come all the way from exotic Los Angeles, California. He rocks out to Patti Smith while Timmy loves ABBA. How does someone so cool end up in tiny, conservative Edgewood, South Carolina?

When Carleen immediately declares Doug a fox and her new prospective boyfriend, Timmy is shocked at his jealous reaction. He’s not supposed to like boys in that way, is he? Blurb: They have eyes for each other. But someone is eyeing them for murder.

In the Junior students’ dormitory at Oakschott Hall, a heavy gaslight falls from the ceiling, crushing the head of a student sleeping beneath it. Was it simply a tragic accident? To avoid publicity, the Headmaster asks Colin Revell, a young Oxford University graduate and former Oakschott student, to quietly investigate.

While interviewing the faculty and staff, Colin meets Max Lambourne, a handsome don who was wounded and gassed in WWI. When Colin tries to help Max overcome his trauma and depression, the two men fall in love and begin an erotic affair.

But when another student dies—diving at night into an empty swimming pool—murder is suspected. Students and faculty all come under suspicion, and rumors proliferate when Scotland Yard intervenes. Meanwhile, during all this confusion and wild theories, the murderer sees Colin and Max as threats. Unbeknownst to the two lovers, their lives are now in danger.

Review: This story is a mash-up of Murder at School by James Hilton, so uses much of that story’s plotline and its characters. The gay romance element was added by Jim Austen.

So when I first started reading this I didn’t know it was a mash-up, I only found out about half-way through and being honest it didn’t make a difference to me.

Colin comes across as a bit sex mad, most thoughts seem to linger on sexual feelings, reminiscing, and fantasising… it was a bit off putting until he met Max and then his sexual thoughts petered off a bit. Another thing is that after the first couple of pages my mind seemed to want to read the book in a droll tone, and I can safely say that that was also Colin’s influence because he just seemed to be soooooo droll about everything until he gets his teeth in the mystery and thankfully my mind also jumped on board to drop the drollness. Okay enough about that lets move on.

Colin (for some reason) gets a note from the headmaster at Oakshott Hall, where he was once a pupil, asking him to investigate a mysterious death, but while he’s investigating the headmaster suddenly changes his tune but not before Colin meets the lovely Max. Colin heads home regretting not getting to know Max better, but Colin soon has another chance with Max when another death occurs at Oakshott Hall, the first dead boys’ brother. And so the true mystery begins.

Now I did enjoy this story but I did feel like throwing my kindle at times because of how dense everyone seem to be concerning the culprit, it was just so incredible that everyone believed the culprits innocent act. And the twist… very well played out.

Colin’s relationship with Max was a sweet little thing, very intense and passionate for both of them. I can’t say much about how well suited they are because we don’t really get to know Max that well. But the author did well to get their relationship off the ground considering it’s a mash-up and the characters we’re both straight men in the original story.

So the story is enjoyable and interesting, the outcome was exciting, and the characters are interesting. If you love historical mysteries, men finding love, and a surprising twist then you’ll enjoy this story.

About Chris!

Chris Quinton started creating stories not long after she mastered joined-up writing, somewhat to the bemusement of her parents and her English teachers. But she received plenty of encouragement. Her dad gave her an already old Everest typewriter when she was ten, and it was probably the best gift she’d ever received – until the inventions of the home-computer and the worldwide web.

Chris’s reading and writing interests range from historical, mystery, and paranormal, to science-fiction and fantasy, writing mostly in the male/male genre. She refuses to be pigeon-holed and intends to uphold the long and honourable tradition of the Eccentric Brit to the best of her ability. In her spare time [hah!] she reads, embroiders, quilts and knits. Over the years she has been a stable lad [briefly] in a local racing stable and stud, a part-time and unpaid amateur archaeologist, a civilian clerk at her local police station and a 15th century re-enactor.

She lives in a small and ancient city in the south-west of the United Kingdom, sharing her usually chaotic home with an extended family, three dogs, a frilled dragon [lizard] and sundry goldfish and tropicals.

Blurb: After the hard winter of 1888 ended Alby Boyle’s work as a Nebraska ranch hand, he returned to New York City in search of his long-lost family. His mother and brothers are nowhere to be found, however, and after Alby’s years of absence, Five Corners no longer feels like home. His prospects seem as dim as the nighttime alleys.

When Alby pauses to admire an angel ornament in a department store window’s Christmas display, he meets Xeno Varnham-Summerfield. Wealthy, handsome, and enthusiastic, Xeno brings Alby some temporary cheer. But for Alby to achieve his dreams of love and a real home, well, that may take a bit of holiday magic.

Review: Alby returns to New York City after a freezing hard winter finished the Nebraskan ranch he worked at, he’s decided to try and track down the family he hasn’t seen since he was thirteen but the building they used to live in is long gone.

When Alby pauses to admire a Christmas Angel in a department stores window he meets Xeno who offers advice, and when Alby keeps bumping into the man outside the department store Xeno makes his interest clear.

This is a wonderful little story that transports you to the streets of New York City in 1888, the setting is brilliantly described and you can immerse yourself in what life was like back then.

Alby is a wonderful character who is comfortable in himself and his skills, he might just be a ranch hand but he still manages to find a job working with horses with the help of Mr. Caruthers the manager of the YMCA. But it doesn’t stop him from being drawn to the department store and Xeno.

Alby is the focus of this story and we learn about his life from childhood to adulthood, you find out some interesting little tidbits about America in 1888, we root for Alby as he tries to find his family and hope that his families fortunes had turned and they were all okay.

While we find out a bit about Xeno it’s in short bursts and while he might come across as a bit forward (hell you don’t just flirt and compliment a guy in 1888), we don’t actually get what he was thinking or what signs he’d seen that would indicate that Alby might be amenable, he comes across as a man who knows what he wants and will aim to get it.

Other than not getting Xeno’s side of the tale I enjoyed this story and admired both men, their relationship is sweet and Xeno’s father very accepting for that time. That they could build a life together and have acceptance from those closest to them was just wonderful and leaves you with warm fuzzy feelings.

I recommend this to those who love historical romances, who adore characters who are interesting and sweet, and who adore happy endings.

Blurb: August 1939. Roger Miller and Jack O’Brien have been close since childhood. By the time they realize there’s more between them than friendship, Jack is leaving their sleepy Iowa town for college. But they console themselves knowing he’ll be home for Christmas. Right?

It is Christmas before they see each other again, but that Christmas comes six years and a world war later. Aged, beaten, and shaken by combat, they’re not the boys they were back then, but their feelings for each other are stronger than ever.

Neither know the words to say everything they’ve carried since that peacetime summer kiss, though. Even as they stand in the same room, there’s a thousand miles between them.

But maybe that’s some distance the little angel in Roger’s rucksack can cross.

Review: Two best friends who just seem to be in tune with each other, leave to join the war. They go in different directions only to find each other down the road once more. A kiss at a pond keeps them remembering each other then things do change. Now many years afterwards they find each other one last time. They are still so much in tune with each other but love shows the way, well with the help of an angel. Roger and Jack are definitely a team that are meant to be together, but in a time where it was dangerous and deadly.

I will be honest that I had not checked this book out until now. I am not a fan of historical’s in any way, so when I read the blurb right before starting to read it, I had a feeling that it was not going to go so well. I do not like the past and for two men it would have been dangerous to be gay. However it was a well written story and with the author being who it is, I knew it would be. It actually kept my attention a little better than most books that are in the past. I really liked the guys and liked the fact that they did not pretend to be anything different then who they were. They never came out but they didn’t marry some female to hide behind. So that was a good sign. Now it catch my attention when I started reading as well which gave me a sense of the fact that this was going to be a good story.

I didn’t care for the parents and could have done with out them. However the story was pretty well developed with beautiful characters. I did like it but it won’t be one of those that will be read more than the first time. I am just afraid that this book just wasn’t my kind of story and didn’t really give me that oh my god spark.

Blurb: When John Trent, a dedicated member of the new Bow Street Runners, finds an exquisite carved angel floating in the Thames, he can’t stop thinking about it. He tracks down its creator, a sad and quiet young sculptor. But neither the angel nor the sculptor is done with John just yet. The blasted angel refuses to leave him be, behaving not at all like an inanimate object should.

Alec Allston is resigned to the fact that his love will ever be a river that flows out and never flows in. All he wanted to do was create a special gift so that a small part of himself could be with his unattainable and noble beloved, always. But when the gift keeps showing back up at his shop in the hands of a windblown and rugged thief-taker, Alec will need to reconsider his conviction that love is destined to remain an aethereal ideal.

Review: Alec has had his heart broken and was going to take his life. However an angel stopped him. He is an amazing sculptor and creates an ornament in the shape of the angel. He had given it to the man he had loved, but the asshat threw it in the lake. A sweet man found it and located him down to give it back. But it is not the last time.

John finds the beautiful angel and returns it, twice. He can’t get his mind off it nor off the sculptor. He then decides to show the sweet man how he feels. A courting we will go.

I really need to pay attention to certain descriptions of books. I don’t care for historicals no matter how cute they can be. I just can’t keep my mind on a story that has history older than me. However Eli has a gift at telling a story of that time. She nailed it pretty good. The name for what John does, which I just call a beat cop, is actually pretty cool. The guys are more like the ones that you would meet in those times. The part I didn’t get was how you greeted each other, would have driven me nuts.

The story is well told and the characters were quite charming. I even liked the secondary characters. I found the story entertaining and quite interesting in a way. It is a really sweet Christmas story. However I really was not a fan of it and it was just not my cup of tea.

Blurb: The year is 1969…

Gary Fairchild is proud to be a hippie college student, and he protests the Vietnam War because he believes in love and peace. To him, it isn’t just a counterculture movement—it’s a way of life. When tickets to the Aquarium Exposition—3 Days of Peace & Music, or Woodstock, as it was better known, go on sale, there’s no way he isn’t going.

Richard Ronsman is a sheltered farm boy who lives in the shadow of his overbearing father. He’s hidden his darkest secret to earn his father’s love, but nothing is ever good enough—not even volunteering for the Vietnam War. And with just a few days left before he’s deployed, a striking hippie invites him to join them at a music festival.

Three days of music, drugs, rain, mud, and love forged a bond between these two very different men that would shape the rest of their lives. They share dreams and fears, and when Richard is shipped off to war, they share letters and love. For Richard’s first Christmas home, he is gifted a special angel ornament that just might make a soldier’s wish come true.

ISBN: B07KVRLNKG

Product Link: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: Three days is all it takes to find love. A young man who believes only in peace and love, and a man who will do anything to get his families approval. Richard is a naive young man who has spent his whole life on a farm. Nothing he does will ever get his fathers love, but he does the one thing he thinks will get it. He joins the Vietnam war as a volunteer. He decides to take a invitation up and goes to Woodstock, with Gary.

Gary does not believe in the war. He just believes in his heart. He invites Richard to spend three days at Woodstock with him and to enjoy. They make a promise a to always stay in touch. This is a magical time for both men and in a time where it is really dangerous.

This story is told in a weird way. It goes from the moment they meet to eght years later. You go from Woodstock all the way to San Fransico. A young man forced to join a war he didn’t want to be in just to please his family and comes back broken in more ways then one. So this story is full of pain and angst, but does have its happy parts as well. It is a well told story that will have you in tears and have you smiling as well. They make a Christmas wish that an angel brings true. It is a sweet Christmas story that will make your heart swell with the best of them.

Now to the down side to the story. It didn’t really catch my attention like it should have nor did it keep it. I don’t really care for stories that are not in the future so to speak. It doesn’t really do anything for me and wasn’t really my cup of tea. That is not saying it isn’t a good book, but it just wasn’t for me.

All he wanted to do was create a special gift so that a small part of himself could be with his unattainable and noble beloved, always. But when the gift keeps showing back up at his shop in the hands of a windblown and rugged thief-taker, Alec will need to reconsider his conviction that love is destined to remain an ethereal ideal.

This book is one of seven stories which can all be read and enjoyed in any order.

A Soldier’s Wish

(Christmas Angel 05)
by

N.R. Walker

The year is 1969…

And with just a few days left before he’s deployed, he’s invited by a striking hippie to join him at a music festival.

This story is one of seven stories which can all be read and enjoyed in any order.

Review: Shared Revelations is a novella by Andrew Grey, who praise in each and every review I write for his books. I’m not sure if it’s meant to take place in the same world as his Hearts Entwined series, but the epilogue made me think of Hearts Unheard.

The narrator for this quick audio (seriously, not much more than an hour!) is JJ Boyer, who was an unknown narrator to me. I really liked his tone. I think the tone really matched as someone who was reminiscing about the past, it was simply delightful.

The story is simple. This is the coming age story of Eddie, who in the 60s finds himself feeling things that he had learnt to be wrong. He has great love and affection for his best friend, Jack, who is partially deaf, but has a massive crush on baseball player, Johnny. Eddie has to carefully discover himself and sort out his feelings for Johnny, while keeping that taboo part of himself secret from everyone he loves, including Jack.

This is a sweet, no fuss story. I suspect if this had been a full-blown novel there would have been a load of angst and homophobia and terror.Since there was no room for that we are left with the bare bones – a boy growing up, discovering his desires and navigating first love. I really like the ending too, wonderful until the end!

Christmas Homecoming

(Christmas Angel 04)

August 1939.

This 24,000 word novella is part of the multi-author Christmas Angel series, and can be read as a standalone.
