The Door Keeper

by

Hurri Cosmo

Although they’ve been labeled as a group of misfits, Minneapolis’ 77th police precinct has plenty of talent.  The problem is, it’s paranormal talent and no one’s supposed to know about it.

Nick keeps his officers busy chasing after all the creepy crawly things that tend to go “bump” in the night, thus insuring the twin cities are safe and totally unaware that other realms even exist. Nick is the Door Keeper and his job as the precinct’s captain is to maintain order in what would otherwise be chaos.

When said chaos rears its ugly head in the form of a ferocious and brutal vampire, the last thing Nick needs is to deal with a new partner, even if that new partner is as sexy as Arrain.

Excerpt

“You?” Arrain took his hands away from Nick and stepped back, a look of surprise on his gorgeous face. Nick found himself wanting to step back into that heated space, a space that belonged to him. “You? You’re…you mean to tell me you’re a Door Keeper?”

Nick sighed. Found out. Finally found out. But if this man took him in his arms, it wouldn’t matter at all. “Yes.”

“Here? In this realm? How is that possible? There is no one assigned here in this realm.”

Oh shit. Cold water again, this time with ice. This was about to get fourteen times uglier. “How…” Damn it! “How would you know that?”

“I sit on the Council and there is no one listed for this realm. There has been no need.”

Nick laughed nervously. “Well, you haven’t had need because I’ve been here taking care of it.”

“Taking care of it? There have been instances? We’ve received no reports!”

Okay, the guy was starting to piss him off. Pull or no pull, need or no fucking need, Arrain was starting to sound like the many asshole idiots Nick had to deal with on a daily basis.

“Why would you? It’s not on your radar. You said so yourself. You have no one assigned here. Why would you get a report from someone that doesn’t exist?”

Nick turned to walk away. He no longer cared that this jerk was out here messing up the crime scene. It wasn’t his problem anymore. He would now need to turn over the other three murders that matched up with this one to Barden and somehow explain why he didn’t report them.

Shit. Reporting! All the fucking time, reporting! Well, that was over with now, too.

He would need to see about getting a door open to some other realm that the stupid-ass fucking Council hadn’t assigned to anyone. If this guy was truly on the Council, no doubt they would figure out who Nick was and come looking for him. Shit. They wouldn’t have to figure out who he was in order to come looking for him, but they sure as hell would find out once they did. So he needed to disappear before that could happen. He would ask if his crew would like to come with him. They were all misfits in need of strong leadership. Without Nick around they would most likely implode.

Well, they did that even with him around.

“Where are you going?”

“Nowhere you need to know about.”

Nick heard Arrain coming up behind him. Should have known he wouldn’t be able to shake the guy that easily. “Wait a minute. Who are you? How is it that we don’t know about you? All Door Keepers are registered and accounted for except one…wait! Seriously? Are you…you couldn’t be…you’re Lore of the Sullenguard! Is that who you are?”

Nick’s heart leaped to his throat and he wouldn’t have been able to talk even if he wanted to, which he didn’t. Damn. That didn’t take long. Didn’t matter, though. He had no trouble disappearing again. Even though he liked it here. Even though he wanted some other existence other than just existence. Closing doors to other realms was a big job. However, it was his responsibility to do in this realm since he was the one who caused the transmutation field to shift in the first place by creating, then coming through, a door leading to it. Arrain was right. There was no need to have a Door Keeper here because prior to Nick arriving, doors never actually opened here.

But as busy as that job kept him, he had only recently realized two things. The first was that the doors, or rather, rips, were more frequent and the beings that emerged from them more intense, more evil than anything he’d seen before. Up until recently he had been able to curb the nasties and send them packing with little to no damage reported. But lately things had become ugly. Destructive. Harder to hide.

The other thing was, he had begun to think there could be something more for him than just closing every fucking breach in the fabric of the realms. He had finally allowed these friendships with his comrades, and lately had actually thought about something even deeper. Something more than just fucking up against a brick wall with Mr. Smith or Jones.

Of course it had been this idiot who had put those thoughts in his head. And what was it he had said? The givers had paired Arrain with a human? Actually paired him? And did he mean him? Well, Nick wasn’t exactly human and the givers never paired Door Keepers and they sure as hell wouldn’t pair him.

Because the givers knew.

Fuck. Walking away was no longer an option. He needed to run.

About Hurri

Hurri Cosmo lives in Minnesota where she holds tight to the idea that there, where it’s cold a good part of the year, she won’t age as fast. Yep, she avoids the truth as much as she avoids mirrors. But one of the reasons she loves writing is reality doesn’t always offer up a “happily ever after” and being able to take control of that is a powerful lure. Being a happy ending junkie, writing just makes them easier to find. Oh, she doesn’t mind “real life” and she does try to at least keep it in mind when she writes her stories, but she truly loves creating a wonderful couple, knowing they will fall in love and have their HEA. Every – single – time. And, of course, that is exactly the reason she loves reading this genre, too. Give her a glass of red wine, some dark chocolate, and her computer, whether she is reading or writing, and she will entertain herself for hours. The fact she actually gets paid to do it is Snickers bars on the frosting on the cake.
