Review: The Taste of Ink is one hot and thoroughly enjoyable ride. I’m not a stranger to Francis Gideon’s writing and this one certainly didn’t let me down. In fact, it exceeded all my expectations.

I tend to mentally groan to myself when I see that a story includes the “adorable geeky guy”, and if you’re the same there is no need to worry. There is nothing about Trevor (one of our main guys) that is your stereotypical nerd.

One thing I will say is that reading the title you may be forgiven if you think, as I did until I read the blurb, that this has got something to do with tattoos. It’s not. Instead, the ink referred to here is the ink on the pages of the comic books/graphic novels written by Trevor Dunn.

Trevor is quite happy to stay in his basement and plod along. Drawing his comics in the hopes that one day he can submit it to a publishing house for publication. But his well-meaning sister gets in the way and drags him, almost literally, kicking and screaming to the Stampede Festival (some sort of Rodeo in Calgary).

It is at the Stampede that his life changes in a whirlwind – he meets Charlie, who sweeps Trevor off his feet for some well-deserved romance. He also bumps into an old flame, Mathieu. Who is in the role of “the one that got away”,  because Trevor was too scared when they were together at the age of 18.

Trevor has only got the ten days of the Stampede to get his shit together and figure out how Mathieu and Charlie fit into his life. Charlie is really the instigator when things move towards the possibility of a three-way.

Totally enjoyable if you like your guys shy and your cowboys hot, there is even a bit of a knight in shining armour moment that helps ties the ends of the plot together for a very satisfying ending.
