The Way You Look Tonight

(The Standards 02)
by

Jo Tannah

As a member of a wealthy and influential family, Jaime “Jamie” Abello had his life mapped out. Being shipped off to LA with an insurance scam linked to his name was not part of his plan.

It had seemed so simple: pass the Philippines Medical Board Exam; practice in the family-owned and -controlled hospital; join the Board by age forty; and find a partner with whom he could settle down and be himself.

Instead, his father supplies him with a surfeit of money and dangerous secrets and sends him to a strange country.

The Pediatric Residency Program Jamie applies for brings him face to face with untouchable Program Director, Miles Kwon, whom Jamie soon finds to be a man of integrity and vision.

When tragedy strikes, Jamie finds himself falling deeper into depression. Unexpectedly, it’s Miles who helps him work through his pain.

Will Jamie ever experience a life with a loving partner, or will his father’s secrets cause him to lose everything he’s gained?

With my attention focused on matching faces to names, I had completely missed Dr. Kwon’s entrance, but when I see him, my mouth dries up like the Sahara.

The man is of mixed Asian descent, about five-nine or -ten, and appears to be in his early forties. He has peppered hair slicked back to reveal a high forehead and intelligent eyebrows. What that last part means, I really have no idea, but that is the only way to describe him. He is frowning, but smiling at the same time. It takes some time before I realize he’s not really frowning, just appears that way due to the deep lines between his eyes. He has those sharp, almost black eyes that look like he knows what you’re thinking or about to do.

As I continue to stare at him, I notice his perfectly groomed hair. From what I can see, he’s buff, too. The tightening of his sleeves around his biceps is quite revealing. He’s not the first Asian guy I’ve found myself sexually attracted to—I have eclectic taste—but looking at Dr. Kwon, my heart begins to flutter. Who can blame me? He’s beautiful, very male, and mildly resembles the actor Will Yun Lee. Only he’s leaner. I can tell by the way he quietly observes us newbies with those piercing eyes that he’s a man with a strong personality. The word ‘irresistible’ comes to mind.

As I continue to stare at him, he turns to me as if feeling my eyes on him. Our gazes lock. The ever-present frown wrinkles his brow, and I just about melt. I can feel the heat rise to my face, but I can’t turn away.

About Jo

JO TANNAH is a wife, mother, and blogger by day, writer by night. It can be difficult to say the least but it is a challenge that keeps her on her toes.

She grew up listening to folktales her father and nannies spun to either entertain the children or send home a message. These narratives stayed with Jo until she finally decided to write them down in a journal way back when she kept one. Years later, going through junk led to finding a long forgotten box and nestled within it was the journal. Reading over the stories of romance, science fiction, and horror that she had taken time to put to paper all those years before brought to light the realization that they were tales she’d never come across in her readings.

The tales Jo write are fictional but all of them are based on what she grew up with and still dreams about. That they have an M/M twist is simply for her pleasure. And she hopes, yours as well.

Review: This is the first book by this author that I have read and I have to say it was a blast. I wasn’t really sure at first if I was going to like it but damn it sure does get better. It is told from Jamie’s perspective and that was the part that I was not sure about. I am not one to normally like those types of books but this one was a hit for me.

Jaime is from a very wealthy family and loved by his father. When things go down in the family his father does everything to protect his son. Jaime had wanted to be a doctor and he was damn good at it. Then his father was accused of fraud and things go to pieces. His father is determined to clear his name and make a life for his son. Jaime had just not expected to be sent to another country altogether.

He takes one look at the residency doctor and is fascinated with him. It would seem that the attraction is returned. Miles wants Jaime just as much.

There is a lot of action in this story with a bit of mystery and suspense that caught my attention. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and look forward to seeing what other stories this author has out there. I can’t wait to read the next story.

This was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend it.
