There’s Something About Ari

(Bluewater Bay 02)
by

L.B. Gregg

Buck Ellis’s future seems pretty damn bright. With a full college scholarship in hand, he’s going to ditch Bluewater Bay and pave the way for his kid brother Charlie to do the same. The only fly in Buck’s ointment is his ten-year addiction to his best friend since second grade, his true love, and his Achilles heel: Ari Valentine, Mr. Least Likely to Succeed.

But then Buck’s mother dies, changing everything, and five years later, his future is still on hold. It’s a struggle to keep food on the table, a roof over their heads, and Charlie on the straight and narrow. Buck can’t afford any temptation, especially in the form of the newly returned, super hot, super confident, super successful television star Ari Valentine.

ADHD poster-child Ari Valentine left for Hollywood and lost everything, including his bad reputation. Then the breakthrough role of his skyrocketing career lands him back in Bluewater Bay, to the stunned disbelief of, well, everyone. But there’s only one person Ari longs to impress—the only person who ever really mattered to him, the person he left behind: Buck Ellis.

Introducing Bluewater Bay

Welcome to Bluewater Bay! This quiet little logging town on Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula has been stagnating for decades, on the verge of ghost town status. Until a television crew moves in to film Wolf’s Landing, a soon-to-be cult hit based on the wildly successful shifter novels penned by local author Hunter Easton.

Wolf’s Landing’s success spawns everything from merchandise to movie talks, and Bluewater Bay explodes into a mecca for fans and tourists alike. The locals still aren’t quite sure what to make of all this—the town is rejuvenated, but at what cost? And the Hollywood-based production crew is out of their element in this small, mossy seaside locale. Needless to say, sparks fly.

This collaborative story world is brought to you by ten award-winning, best-selling LGBTQ romance authors: L.A. Witt, L.B. Gregg, Z.A. Maxfield, Aleksandr Voinov, Heidi Belleau, Rachel Haimowitz, Anne Tenino, Amy Lane, SE Jakes, and G.B. Gordon. Each contemporary novel stands alone, but all are built around the town and the people of Bluewater Bay and the Wolf’s Landing media empire.

Join L.A. Witt and L.B. Gregg for the Welcome to Bluewater Bay Tour, and check out Starstruck and There’s Something About Ari to meet the cast, crew, and locals!

Review: This story is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone. Buck put all his dreams on hold when his mother died, he had a little brother, Charlie, to look after and there was no way he was losing his brother to social services. Ari is returning to Bluewater Bay after 5 years, he left before graduation and has shuck his bad boy image and now returns to star in Wolf’s Landing, he never forgot his childhood friend, Buck, and has bought the house next door to him. Buck is surprised when Ari moves back into town, he’s even more surprised when Ari acts like everything is fine between them, putting the past behind him is difficult but Buck must find peace if he is to find happiness.

Buck is a great guy who has done everything he can to keep his brother and to keep him safe, he gave up a full college scholarship when his mother died and he still works in the coffee shop where he used to work part time in school. The day his mother died was one of the worst of his life as he not only lost his mother and had to become the parent to his little brother but he also lost his best friend when Ari skipped town with no word. Ari coming back into his life unearths his old feelings for the man and leaves Buck in a confusion of emotions. Ari left Bluewater Bay when his life fell apart and he didn’t know how to tell Buck, Ari struggled for months by himself before he admitted he needed more help than he could get in the town and headed out. Ari came back to Bluewater Bay for more than a television show, he also came back for Buck, but breaking through Buck’s prickly shell is harder than he thought.

This is an easy read story with just a touch of background angst, it’s of secret first loves reuniting and forgiving the past and moving on to the future. Buck comes across as a bit of a loner, he’s shaped his life around his younger brother and when Ari walks back in his life he seems awkward. Ari was the lively one who dragged Buck from his lonely world when they were children, now he wants to do it again. Ari is a sweetheart who has already had his wild years, and he now wants to claim Buck like he wanted to do when they were younger but was too scared to. Having their attraction for each other out in the open doesn’t just instantly repair their friendship but Buck finally puts his misgivings away and embraces what they could have.

I liked this story and the fact that there was no instant forgiveness; Buck had to work out his feelings and let go of the past before he could accept Ari and Ari had to be patient and open himself up to Buck. They make a very hot couple but with Buck’s rolling feelings you never know quite where they stand with each other. I must admit that seeing things through Buck’s eyes was great as he was in turmoil over his feelings for Ari, but I would have loved to know what was going on in Ari’s head as well… it couldn’t have been easy for him to return to Buck and lay himself bare while keeping his cheerful attitude.

I recommend this to those who love bad boy makes good stories, who adore men who put their lives on hold for their families, who love angsty pasts that are laid to rest and men who finally admit their feelings for the other and begin to get their happily ever after.
