What Do I Like Best About Paranormal Romance?

Oh, where do I start? Paranormal romance is my favorite. Now, this isn’t to say that I don’t enjoy contemporary, historical and basically all other genres of m/m romance, but my absolute favorite is paranormal. Why? I can tell you that it didn’t just start this year, last year or even ten years ago. I’ve loved paranormal and all of its creatures since I was in middle school when Piers Anthony then later in high school when Anne Rice were my “go to” reads. There’s just something about being able to stretch the limits that really thrills me. Even in those works, there were hints and even glimpses of m/m, little pearls I treasured. Imagine my happiness when I discovered that not only was m/m being published, but paranormal romance was embraced as well. I had found my home.

Now, why do I like romances involving monsters, fabled creatures and the like? It would have to be the freedom. Yes, there are certain parameters that must be followed, moors that exist for different beasts and mythical beings, but I love the passion, the ability to stretch the imagination beyond the literary constraints of contemporary romance. Now, what’s fun about paranormal romance is the fact that I have room to play. I could dabble in the historical, urban fiction, thriller, etc. But, the expectation of the otherworldly is there as a thread providing me the ability to do more. It’s what I love. The more.

I can’t help but think about the heat that the characters are able to experience in paranormal romance, the acceptance that things may burn a little faster, a little hotter. The men are able to be more aggressive, a little more possessive in some cases. Also, introducing the main characters and developing the way they will circle around each other, sizing each other up or slamming together unable to resist that overwhelming pull to become one?  Or, maybe it’s fear of the unknown, overcoming the divide that separates those that are different? Simply varying the approach is fascinating to me.

Finally, there’s the history of the creatures. I tend to like the ones that are a little less known, the mysterious ones. I read about them, find out what makes them so unusual and invite them in to play.

Paranormal romance. Contemporary romance. Historical romance. Truly, I love them all. But, my requirement? The reader must be able to develop a relationship with my characters, know them, love them or even hate them. There has to be plot, a true story line.

Can I help that paranormal romance tends to offer the best story lines of them all?

Excerpt

They never asked him his name. They ran from his shadow. He was alone. Always alone. He was Nightmare.

To me he was everything I wanted. To me, he was beautiful. I needed to run my fingers along his skin, to cherish him. In the heat of the blazing sun, I wanted to taste his sweat. I wanted him beneath me, a part of me, a part of my soul. He didn’t frighten me. He entranced me. He called to me.

About Deja

Deja Black had fantasies of men loving men, men who felt strongly, loved hard, and needed a hero. Then one great day she came across a book and discovered the world of m/m writing, encountered others who shared her obsession as much as she did, and found a world where she could not only be accepted for the lives and loves she envisioned, but she could create them too. So why not? Why not take the stories she would write and throw away as a teenager, grow them, dream them, and make them a reality where she could know her own characters, let them live their story, and make them real for someone else? And she did. Now, with the support of her hubby and some intense time management, she is learning to balance her family of two energetic children and a very needy shitzu at home along with the many students she teaches each and every day with her passion of writing what she loves to read.
