West Coast

(Up In The Air 02)

George Loveland

Max Cooper has never known love and uses drink to numb the feelings of rejection he’s faced with. It doesn’t help him in his career as an air steward when after a very drunken night his best friend swaps their flights over so Max can keep his job.

When Max flies out to Los Angeles, his patience is tested when he offers to help fellow air steward and rising drag queen, Dai Zee, with her costume changes at the best drag club in LA, Flamingos. While he watches Dai Zee perform, he catches the eye of a guy in the corner, but fails to find him when the performance ends. An ill-timed text message sends Max back to the bottle, and into the bed of a man he doesn’t know, and doesn’t want to be with.

The next night at Flamingos he finds the man he was searching for, but it’s not as easy as he’d hoped. Antonio Baldini isn’t interested in a drunken Max and rejects his advances until another drag queen, Miss Crystal, plays a hand in getting the two of them together. As Max and Antonio step past the initial confusion, they tread carefully with each other, neither one wanting to get hurt.

Even when Max is back in London, the late-night video calls don’t stop, but it’s when they are reunited in Las Vegas that things turn serious.

Max can’t shake his past, and someone is out for him and his job – trying to stop him from flying altogether. He’s worried about what it will mean for his new relationship if he can’t fly; and whether he can stay away from the drink long enough to be with a man who seems to care for him.

George Loveland Interview!

Thanks for having me today at MM Good Book Reviews, here I’m answering a few questions from my readers.

How nervous were you at your first signing?

Very, very nervous. I have only done one and it was at the UK Meet in 2016. I had the Starstruck anthology, which had only just came out at the time, with me. It was lovely, and I got in the groove of signing by the end of it. I was happy to have sold some copies too.

If you had the opportunity to live one year of your life over again, which year would you choose?

I would go back to when I was sixteen. I hid away, stayed in the closest and didn’t fight to go college/sixth form and live my dream. My life would be very different, I’m sure and I would be living my dream. However, life changes and I am happy with where I am. I think we all get to where we are meant to be in the end.

If you were stuck on a desert island all alone with only three things, what would they be?

A notebook, a pen, and sun cream. I burn so easily, I don’t want to be stuck with constant sunburn! hehe

Tell me one thing hardly anyone knows about you.

I used to live in Spain and worked in my parent’s restaurant for a couple of years. I was eighteen/nineteen at the time, and stayed until I was twenty-two. My parents left me there; I got a job elsewhere and stayed to enjoy the life. I think that’s when I became enamored with Latin men.

Were you a voracious reader as a child?

Yes! I loved Roald Dahl and CS Lewis, and as I got older I read a lot of Star Trek: The Next Generation books, as well as other movie and television tie in books. It was great to be able to escape into those worlds and follow the stories and characters in other ways.

What character gave you fits and fought against you?

In On the Third Kiss Sebastian and Javier wanted to get together a lot sooner than I had planned. As I was writing one of them would do something which end up with them kissing and more. This happened a couple of times, and in the end I had to write it just so I could let them have what they want, and then get back to the story. There was another time in Up in the Air 1: Johannesburg when James and Darren were about to do it, and James backed out. I had to do what he wanted and then went back to reweave it. However, with Max and Antonio in Up in the Air 2: West Coast, we were all on the same page. They behaved, or they got me to do what they wanted, I’m not sure which!

Where do you like to write?

I like a coffee shop. As long as there is a good table to sit out, and my back is supported I am happy. Plus I can get good coffee and snacks. Of course I have to pay for it all, but I love to write there.

About George!

George was about eighteen when he told his friend that he was going to be a writer. It took him another eighteen years before he finally did anything about it and wrote his first short story. A typical Englishman, he drinks buckets of tea with milk—but no sugar, because he is sweet enough. His Nan told him so.

George lives just outside of London, but close enough to enjoy Soho and the West End, where you will find him in a bar with a pint, in a club dancing into the early hours of the morning, or enjoying a musical in the theater; but more than likely he will be in a coffee shop reading a book or writing a new story. Currently single, but taking applications for future husband position, George enjoys crafting romantic stories in which he hopes that one day, life will imitate art.
