“Was the medical okay?” Finn asked as they got into his truck.

Talon’s breath hitched, and Finn immediately zeroed in on the noise.

“What?”

“Have you heard of telomerase?” He’d been shocked as fuck at the latest theory over the cause of his abilities. Finn shook his head, Talon chuckled. “You mean there’s actually something you don’t know?”

Finn grinned and slid a hand to Talon’s thigh. Talon’s muscles hardened underneath automatically. Fuck, he loved Finn’s touch. “What is it?” Finn asked seductively, his fingers roving toward Talon’s groin.

Talon groaned. “You have two choices. I can explain and we carry on to the tattoo place, or keep your hand there and I’ll just take you back to bed.”

Finn pouted and lifted his hand, but Talon grabbed it to lace their fingers, resting them both on his knee.

“Some doctors at Harvard did this thing with mice where they reversed the aging process. I didn’t understand it, but long story short, every person has twenty-three pairs of chromosomes, yeah?”

Finn nodded.

“Well, there’s this thing called a telomere on the end of every chromosome, like a protective cap. Every time a cell divides, this protective cap gets shorter, so they’ve developed this enzyme called telomerase to protect the cells. Not only did these mice live longer, but the cell’s aging processes were slowed significantly and sometimes completely reversed. Trouble is, this enzyme exists naturally in mice, but it’s turned off in humans.” Talon wrinkled his nose and pulled to a stop at the lights. “I don’t understand the science, but it’s something to do with the risk of cancer. More telomerase makes it higher.”

“Because the cells would develop out of control,” Finn added with a certain level of awe in his voice.

Talon smiled. “You know, I think I’m just gonna put you down as my next of kin so you can talk about all this with the doctor and just tell me the dumbed-down version.” He glanced at Finn when he didn’t get a reply. Finn was staring at him, and he realized what he had said. Next of kin. Like, partners. Like, family. The idea didn’t freak him out as much as he thought. Talon cleared his throat. “For some reason, I’m not like other humans in that this enzyme isn’t turned off in my body.”

“Do they think it could slow aging in you?” Finn asked, and Talon smiled at the question. Unless the doc had pointed it out to him, he wouldn’t have made that connection.

“No, Doc doesn’t think so, but she wants me in for more tests. They want to know if my ability is linked. Although I can understand it slowing the stuff in my body, I have no idea how it would work to slow down other people’s.” He tried to roll the sudden tension in his neck. “I’m worried it’s another excuse to think we’re weird.” He held his breath. Admitting that was like a weakness. What if Finn thought that? What if Finn decided he was too much trouble?

“And I absolutely think the opposite. Think about it,” Finn said, the enthusiasm in his voice clear, and Talon exhaled. “Both Sawyer’s and Gael’s abilities are caused by physiological changes in their bodies, like you. They weren’t suddenly zapped by lightning or visited by aliens. It’s natural progression.” He smiled. “Did you know that in the last one hundred thousand years, human teeth have actually halved in size? Obviously because of the dietary changes, but what’s really fascinating is, in the future, babies are likely to be born with fewer toes.”

Talon blinked. “Huh?”

“Before humans walked upright, our toes, like our fingers, were used for grappling. The biggest is still for balance of course, but the smallest is completely unnecessary.” Finn took a breath and glanced at Talon, the flush starting in his neck. Talon chuckled as Finn groaned and buried his head.

Talon nearly opened his mouth to say something. The words he never thought he’d say burning a hole in his gut, fighting to escape. He took a breath, and the moment passed. Although, telling Finn what was in his heart suddenly didn’t seem to be the impossibility he always thought it was, and for the first time, he wasn’t so sure the defenses he’d shored up over the years were a good thing.

Suddenly he wanted to say them very much. Talon lifted his arm and nearly dragged Finn over the central console to squeeze him tight into his body. Finn was quiet, and Talon knew Finn was waiting for him to say something, anything, but Talon didn’t know where to start.

He’d wished when he was younger to wake up one day and find the whole thing had been an awful nightmare, that he didn’t have a weird mark on his face. But now his dreams had changed a little. He liked being able to help the kids. He’d loved it when Oliver’s mom had taken him home, and they all still visited. He just wanted a cool ability like Vance or Gael. Sawyer was completely awesome… but him? He killed people.

He’d wanted to die himself the day he felt the life leave Finn’s body. That day in the warehouse, he was done. If the team hadn’t come in at that second, he would have attacked Dakota purely so he would have finished him off too.

“T?”

Talon closed his eyes and gripped Finn to him. He was terrified he was going to lose Finn, and he was equally terrified he was pushing Finn away.

“I—” He didn’t know what to do, what to say. He felt Finn’s smooth hand stroke his cheek and for a second leaned into it. If he gave Finn his weight, would he break or would he be able to hold him? He ached for that and felt the burn in his throat and the sting in his eyes.

“We need to go,” he whispered but didn’t let go.

“Trust me,” Finn said gently and raised Talon’s chin with two small fingers. Talon blinked until he focused better. He bit off a reassurance before it left his lips and stared into the green eyes he loved so very much.

“I don’t just mean with the job,” Finn added as if Talon didn’t know. As if Talon didn’t understand Finn was asking for more. For him. All of Talon, and especially for Talon’s heart. Trying to tell him he could give it to him because Finn would keep it safe. But it was too late. Talon didn’t know how to find the words to explain that his heart no longer beat in his own chest because it was already nestled in Finn’s.
