Police cadet and bear shifter Tyson Dakota looks forward to his on-the-job training in Seaside, Oregon, working alongside his cousin, Chief of Police John Dakota. Their goal is to investigate the growing meth epidemic and identify the kingpin bringing the drugs into their community. All signs point to someone inside law enforcement working with the drug traffickers, and Tyson must find out who before the body count gets any higher.

Along the way, Tyson meets Amante, a charismatic and attractive man in town for reasons he doesn’t want to share. Tyson is drawn to Amante despite his secretive ways and is sure there could be more between them than explosive passion, if he could just get Amante to make his stay in Seaside permanent. But when Tyson’s pursuit of justice puts him at odds with Amante, they could lose more than their fledgling relationship.

They could end up losing their lives.

Ethan Stone Interview!

We are here today to talk about Wild Instincts.  What can you tell us about it?

It’s a mystery involving drug dealers, murder and attempted murder set in Seaside, Oregon. Seaside is a haven for shifters of all kinds to live or visit. I think it’s a little different than many shifter stories in that the focus is on the mystery not the paranormal aspect. If shifters were real they’d be dealing with everyday matters such as crime. Not everything they dealt with would be central to their being shifters. Shifter cops would deal with crimes committed by both shifters and non-shifters.

Please tell us more about our main characters.

Tyson is a bear shifter and a cadet in training for the Seaside Police Department. At the beginning of the story he has just turned eighteen, a huge step in the paranormal world. He’s gay in a fairly small town and is hoping to celebrate his birthday with a hot guy. He gets his wish when he meets the slightly older, and mysterious, Amante. Their lust is instant and quite hot but their relationship has a deadline because Amante is only in town for a short time.

What do you want to tell those who may be new to the series?

Tyson is related to John from the first book, Wild Retaliation, and there are some references to the first book but you don’t need to have read it to understand this book. It shares the same setting; Seaside, Oregon. By the way, Seaside is a real town in Oregon. Though, as far as I know, there are no shifters.

What about Wild Instincts makes you the proudest?

I liked the relationship I created between Tyson and Amante. There’s passion from the beginning but it becomes something deeper as time goes on. The story also involves a subplot of mpreg and I had a great time writing a male character giving birth—a first for me.

What is next for these characters?  Is there more to this series?  If so who will we hear from next?

I don’t see another story for Tyson and Amante but there might be more stories in the Seaside Shifters series. I have an idea for another mpreg plot but I have other projects to finish first.

What part of a new story comes to you first? Characters? Plot? A scene? A theme? Or does it vary from book to book?

It varies from book to book though lately it’s been the plot coming to me first. I’d like to get back into more character based stories. That was the case with In the Flesh. Cristian Flesh came to me pretty clearly formed. I think some of my later characters aren’t as edgy as Cristian, though I can’t write every guy as an asshole like Cristian is.

How important are secondary characters to your story telling? Do you actively try to have women characters in your M/M to balance the male focus of the MCs?

I love writing interesting secondary characters. In Wild Instincts there are a couple like some of the deputies but in full length novels I’m able to add more colorful characters. As far as female characters, I admit that in my early books I often wrote negative depictions of women. I’ve tried much harder since then and consciously work on writing strong women.

Any last words?

Thank you for allowing me to visit MM Good Book Reviews today and thanks to all the readers for taking time out of their busy day. I hope you consider reading Wild Instincts whether you’re a fan of shifter stories or not. I tried to make it interesting to both sides of the table.

May the force be with you.

TURNING EIGHTEEN is supposed to mean a lot, but really it doesn’t amount to much other than a shitload of new responsibilities.

One of the advantages, at least in Seaside, is that I could now get into the town’s one gay bar, the Basement. It was nothing more than the basement of one of many local clubs—Beach N’ Brew—not very large and not usually crowded. But it was a place for the locals to go and for the tourists who wanted to hook up.

The bouncer eyed me when I came down the stairs. Minors, even those with fake IDs, didn’t stand a chance in Seaside if they were residents. Everybody knew everybody, so they knew who was underage and who wasn’t.

I held up a hand and grinned. “I’ve been legal for a few weeks now, since just before I graduated high school.”

“Prove it,” he said.

After retrieving my wallet, I tugged out my license and handed it to him. I watched as his lips moved, probably doing the necessary math in his head. Finally he handed it back and I headed for the bar. It served only virgin drinks and soda. Those wanting alcohol had to order it upstairs.

“Gimme a Jack and Coke, hold the Jack,” I told the bartender.

He rolled his eyes and snorted. “Yeah, like I haven’t heard that one before.” He poured the drink and I paid the overpriced bill, adding a decent tip. Leaning against the bar, I surveyed the scene and was fairly disappointed. I should’ve known the place wouldn’t be packed, but I’d hoped since it was my first visit to the Basement, I’d find a guy to have some fun with.

I’d been with less than a dozen guys while in school, though not always the type of guys I preferred. I had a thing for older guys. Not a lot older, but guys ten to fifteen years above my age. Being a minor had made that very difficult. I’d settled for guys my age because, well, I was a horny teenager. I’d messed around with Xander, my best friend, several times. But he didn’t live in town. He went to college in Seattle. It wasn’t serious with him, but the sex was hot. We knew we weren’t life mates; that much was for sure.

The people were mostly locals and men who weren’t my type. Even the tourists didn’t do anything for me. Shifters outnumbered the regular people approximately sixty/forty. There was a huge difference in their scents, and I tended to favor the smell of shifters, though not always.

I preferred to sleep with fellow shifters even if they weren’t bears like me. With strangers I was always a little afraid I’d lose control during a particularly erotic moment.

Nursing my drink, I hung out at the bar for a couple of hours, never once going on the dance floor. A few guys asked, but I declined. They weren’t my type, and I didn’t want to settle just for the sake of having sex. I wanted, truly desired, an experience that would blow my mind and that I would never forget.

I was getting ready to leave when someone new entered. He instantly caught my attention—and everyone else’s—and I couldn’t help but stare at him. He was shorter than me by about four inches, probably five ten or so. A bit on the twinkish side but more muscular than most and with several tattoos. Despite his size, I suspected he was older than he looked. There was just something in the way he strolled in and observed everything that told me he’d been around and seen a lot.

When I finally took my eyes off him, I noticed several other guys were checking him out. As soon as he hit the bar, a local named Felix Magnusson was at his side and asking if he could buy him a drink. The guy shrugged and nodded. He accepted the glass and took a sip but didn’t pay attention to Felix’s blabbering. Felix was doing what he normally did to get men and women into bed—talking about how much money he had. Apparently, thankfully, the guy didn’t seem to care one little bit.

I smirked as I listened to Felix’s best game, but the sexy man just wasn’t into it. He was glancing around when his eyes caught mine. We held the eye contact for longer than normal, and only someone else stepping between us made me look away. The guy turned to Felix, politely thanked him for the drink, and stepped away. He ignored the men asking him to dance and pushed through them as he made his way to me.

“Hello,” he said, his voice deep and alluring. He also had a scent I had never smelled before. He was human, but his smell turned me on like nothing I’d ever experienced. It was a honeyed aroma. Sweet and woodsy. I wanted nothing more than to bury my face in his neck and breathe in the heady fragrance.

I coughed to clear my throat and get my concentration back. “Hi.”

He batted his eyelashes at me, showing off his beautiful emerald-green eyes.

“You enjoying all the attention?” I asked.

Felix and several other men glared at me, angry I got the beautiful man’s time instead of them.

He waved a hand. “None of them are who I’m interested in.” He turned to me and put his hand on mine. “You, on the other hand, are exactly the type of guy I like.”

I felt my face warm, and he chuckled. “Are you shy?” he asked.

“Not usually,” I admitted.

He gripped my hand and tugged me to the dance floor. Taken aback by his forwardness, it took me a moment to find the rhythm and start moving to the beat of the techno music. He started off an inch or so away from me, but soon he was pressed up against my body. His back to my front. His ass to my crotch. He reached back and grabbed my neck before rubbing it sensually.

There was no doubt about my attraction to him. He had to feel my erection pushing against him. His scent, the way his body felt against mine, the energy between us was all so goddamn incredible. I spun him around and pulled him to me before cupping his face in my hands. I went in for a kiss, but he dodged it and my lips landed on his cheek.

“I prefer to know a man’s name before I kiss him,” he whispered.

“I’m Tyson.”

He blinked quickly and gave me an odd stare, then said, “My name is Amante.”

“Beautiful name for a beautiful man.”

He blushed and glanced at the floor. “You’re just flattering me to get me into bed.”

“No, I’m not.”

“You don’t want to have sex with me?” He stepped back and folded his arms.

“Of course I want to,” I replied. “You’re hot as fuck. I doubt there’s a man in the room who wouldn’t kill to take you away. But that doesn’t mean what I said isn’t true. You’re gorgeous. I haven’t been as attracted to a guy as I am to you since… well, ever. And that’s the truth.”

He nodded toward an empty table. “Want to take a break from the dancing?”

I shot him a cheesy grin. “I’ll follow you anywhere.”
