(The Game Players 01)
by

Brad Vance

Software billionaire Marc Julian’s orderly life is shattered one night by a cyber-intrusion into his company’s servers. He’s always surrounded himself with the best people, but finding the culprit behind this might require a real expert…and sometimes it takes a thief to catch a thief.

Jesse Winchester and his team of “grey hat” hackers are suddenly available to Marc. Marc doesn’t know if he should trust Jesse with the keys to his company’s kingdom. After all, Jesse’s a convicted felon, sent to prison for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. A felon sentenced to thirty-five years in prison, who mysteriously served only three years before being released…

Marc’s first company, his whole life, was shattered because he trusted the wrong person. This time there’s even more at stake, but few other options. Especially when his evil enemies, the billionaire industrialist Krom brothers, are revealed to be the source of the intrusion.

Is Jesse there to help Marc, or does he have his own history with the Kroms, his own score to settle? As Jesse and Marc spend more time together, their growing intimacy is at war with their need to win their respective battles. Soon the game they start to play with each other, against each other, becomes more exciting, more exquisitely frustrating…and more dangerous.

Brad Vance short Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Brad Vance, author of “Would I Lie to You?”  Hi Brad, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Thank you!  Glad to be here.

Describe your book to us.

It’s a story about Marc and Jesse, two very smart, very sexual, very troubled men who connect on many levels.  But, their pasts have made them wary of new relationships.  And while they’re thrown together against a common enemy, each has different reasons and objectives when it comes to fighting that enemy.  Each of them is looking for something more than the garden-variety relationship, that’s not for them.  It’s a very fast paced, suspenseful book, with a lot of action and conflict.

Have you ever read something that made you think differently about your genre? Can you tell us what it was?

I’ve never forgotten Andrew Holleran’s “Dancer from the Dance,” set in the gay world of New York in the late 60s/early 70s.  That book changed my life as a teenager.  It was one of the first really significant gay literary novels.  I read it again many years later with this vague recollection of how sexy it was…and then I discovered that there was no sex in it at all!  That it was all just…heat.  Sultry summer nights in a decaying city, desire, mostly unfulfilled, the quest for love, the bonds of friendship between outcasts and outsiders.  It’s the gold standard for anyone writing in this genre – any genre, really.

Tell us about your character’s family life?

Marcus (Marc) Julian is very lucky to have the family he has.  His father, Hadrian Julian, is a Roman history professor, which is how his sons ended up named Marcus and Antoninus (who goes by Andy and refuses to answer to his full name).  His mother Julia is also an academic.  When Marc’s first business collapses, compounded by a betrayal by the man he loves, he falls into a deep depression, and comes home to lick his wounds.  They believe in him, and when he comes up with an idea on how to restart his career and his fortune, they’re right there for him.

Compare yourself to your main character.

Hmm.  Well, there is a lot of me in Marc.  We’re both very controlling in our business, we’re both impatient with stupidity, we both have, um, darker sexual desires than most! If I were ever to get into a LTR, it would have to be with a man like Jesse, someone who rivaled me in brains and humor and creativity.  Someone who wouldn’t bore me. That’s the nice thing about being a writer – if you can’t have your dream man, you just write him.

Describe your past week as a type of landscape or a weather forecast.

Oh, boy, a turbulent Normandy landscape, dark clouds and waves crashing against the rocks!  Trying to sell a new novel is a nerve-racking experience, and I’m going on vacation in two days and trying to get everything tied up before then.  In three days, though, the interior landscape will be a sunny California beach (not literally, but mentally, which is just as good)!

Excerpt

He’d made a mistake with Marc.  He’d thought they could play a game together, to pass the time, let off steam, release stress.  Marc was smart enough to know that that’s all it was.

Right?

But the look on his face, when Jesse said goodbye… The shock.  The disappointment.  The…

Say it.  The hurt.  That was when Jesse knew that for Marc, it had been more.

That was when Jesse knew that it had been more for him, too.

Review: I loved this cover and the blurb above really sounded interesting and I was eager to read this book. When I first began I had to go back and make sure I had the right blurb for the book because it began with Marc licking Ryan’s boots and Ryan is a high class very expensive escort. (Think thousands not hundreds of dollars a night or evening).

Soon though, Marc got a call and had to go to his office where he had been hacked. His security manager recommended someone unorthodox. This is where Jesse came in. He was very businesslike. His company set up to go to work then he and Marc ended up nearly naked having a real fight, MMA style in the office. After Marc wouldn’t surrender and got knocked out, Jesse tied him to the toilet in his office and left him. I was thinking is this going to be all about the BDSM?

Then it got worse for me. Once they did get to work on the invasion there was so much computer talk, and political talk I nearly quit reading the book. I thought it just really wasn’t going to be my cup of coffee.

But the underlying story was pretty good so I pushed through. Then…the story abruptly went to Marc’s past. Then it went back to the future for a while as they fixed Marc’s issue then all of a sudden we were in Jesse’s past, so it was almost like 4 books…Marc’s story, Jesse’s story, the main story, and Marc and Ryan (the BDSM part).

Now…once you got the whole story and there was a big twist. After we got Jesse’s story, there was a lot less computer and technical speak and I actually enjoyed the story more. It wasn’t easy to figure out, had a couple interesting twists and Jesse …well he isn’t your run of the mill knight in shining armor. Actually, he is a grifter and a con artist along with being a Dom. This story will keep you on your toes. I also liked the BDSM once I got used to it, as it wasn’t the usual ‘put your hands over your head’ or ‘do as I say’. It showed real control and why someone would want that and wasn’t about the sex at all.  I also really liked the ending though it was happy it also lead to more to come.  This gave the air of an ongoing mystery, leaving us wondering what Jesse was getting into next.

There is also going to be a short story with Ryan. I have to say that I really am interested in that. I LOVED Ryan.

If you like BDSM, computer geeks, con artists, ex-convicts, politics, Big businessmen, billionaires, BDSM, humiliation, some twists, and a touch of mystery along with a bit of hot man-sex this Is definitely for you.
