Blurb: Eric Allen and his bestie buy a neglected hotel on the scenic Oregon coast to fulfill their middle-school dreams of co-owning a B&B. The building is in decent shape but in order to turn Buchanan House into the gay resort of their dreams, it’s going to need work.

Tim Tate is a skilled carpenter with many hidden talents, and a body that could grace the pages of a fitness magazine. When he and Eric meet, it’s mutual lust at first sight. Despite the intense attraction, both men are hesitant to fully out themselves by acting on it. But when they give in, it’s obvious that they’ve found something special—and not only in bed.

Before Eric can be free to love the gorgeous handyman they have to make it through the July4th grand opening. With rain that won’t stop and a meddling brother intent on wreaking havoc, can the holiday still go off with a bang?

Pride Weekend:
Overworked cubicle jockey Adam Byron wants to attend Oregon Coast Pride in style but the price of a room at Buchanan House, a popular gay retreat on the central coast, is beyond his budget. So he won’t miss out, he advertises online for someone to share expenses. Corporate drone Silas Grant responds to Adam’s ad, and the two get to know each other via texts before meeting at the coast. They agree on a no-pressure roommate arrangement, yet once they meet face-to-face their attraction is undeniable. Desire might simmer well beyond Pride weekend, no matter how hard Adam and Silas try to live up to their noncommitment pact.

Review: 💖💖💖💖 4 Hearts Buchanan House

This is a real interesting book that has a really interesting historical background as to the name of the book/the B and B that is brought by the MC and his best mate. This is the second Charley Descoteaux book I’ve read (previously read and reviewed The Pinch of the Game) and I have to say that this one, with all its sweetness and a touch of angst and drama, is my favourite of the two.

I have to say, that there really is one MC of this book, Eric, whose family except for his grandmother rejected him when he revealed that he was bisexual. Years later and now with his grandmother dead, Eric’s bestie Nathan has a plan for the pair to buy an Oregon resort, fix it up and open it up to the gay community. Eric’s love interest is Tim, a handyman who is hired on to help the guys with the odds and ends that need to be fixed up. He really doesn’t come through as an MC as such, not really until the last quarter of the book. I would have loved to have heard more from Tim.

There are a whole other host of minor characters that paint Eric and Tim’s world with colourful and sometimes eccentric personalities. There is also the clash of Eric’s biological family giving him issues, something that I wasn’t completely satisfied with when it was only resolved with a quick phone call and no real explanation.

As I said this is a really sweet book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is about a guy trying to make a fresh start and making a pretty good go of it. All in all it is an uplifting sort of book and something that I think would appeal to a general audience.

The historical side note, said in the blurb, the guys name their resort after President James Buchanan – who was a bachelor with a “very close male friend”. Totally fascinating, even if you aren’t from the States, this book has me wanting to read up about Buchanan, though I wish a bit more background was incorporated into the book.

💖💖💖💖 4 Hearts Pride Weekend

This is a short and sexy read. It such a wonderful glance into the little universe of Buchanan House – named after a potentially gay president.

This is the story of Adam and Silas. They meet each other online and make plans to meet up at Buchanan House for Pride Weekend and hopefully for some hot loving. But the guys get more than they bargained for when romance sparks between them. A lovely story with a satisfying ending, it is just a teaser for the upcoming, full length installment of the Buchanan House series.

Chase Holland spends his days painting Portland scenes to hang in local businesses, neglecting his own surrealist style. After twenty-five years as a full-time artist, he’s frustrated that his career has stalled, but churning out the equivalent of corporate art is better than getting a day job. Chase and Garrett have been together—off and on, but mostly on—for a decade. If asked, they would both say the source of their trouble is the seventeen-year age gap. The truth is less clear-cut. Life would be so much easier if Chase could make a living with his own art, or if Garrett held less conventional ideas about relationships.

Garrett Frisch has been watching their friends get married for the past two years, and it’s taking an emotional toll. When he proposes as a way to keep them together permanently, he thinks he’s being responsible, but Chase is ambivalent and hurt and can’t hide it. It doesn’t help that Garrett’s anxiety is out of control and he’s dealing with insecurities about his own art career. They will have to do their least favorite thing—talk about something more important than which food cart to visit—if they are to get the happy ending they both want.

Ryan Orchard moved from small-town Idaho to Portland almost two years ago and still feels like a hick. When Paulie Nesbitt dumped him, he wasn’t even surprised. Despite losing twenty-five pounds since then, Ryan’s confidence is nonexistent and his life has stalled. Not only is he convinced the career he wants is beyond his reach, he’s given up on relationships. A new job at a familiar restaurant—and his gorgeous coworker—could be just what Ryan needs to believe in himself again.

Glenn Hernandez might be the only nineteen-year-old in Portland who dreads his days off. Between his horrible housing situation and the ever-present temptation to crawl back into the bottle, Glenn prefers to keep busy. He volunteers at the Elliott Foundation House, a homeless shelter helping LGBTQ sex workers. As an alum of the shelter, Glenn finds it hard to leave his past behind. Review: Charley Descoteaux’s Buchanan House series is really a fantastic read. However, this particular book can be read as a standalone, those that have read the previous four books in the Buchanan House series may want to go back and work out where things fit in the story. Then again, you may not want to do that either. Whatever.

Charley writes in the author’s note how this particular book fits in the story. It’s not a part of the main timeline within the series, much like the other novella within the series “Pride Weekend”, “Holiday Weekend” is a part of the Buchanan House universe but not directly, also an important of the structure is that these also don’t open with a funeral, as the other three books in the series do. That was me quickly rehashing the author’s note .

The story itself revolves around the Elliot Foundation House – it’s a shelter for young gay men living on the street, most of them as sex workers to get by which has roots in the previous books of the series. Glenn is one of the success stories. He used to live on the streets and sell his body for money but the 19 year old is now a recovering alcoholic who is making life better for himself, even if he doesn’t really see it for himself quite yet. Then there is Ryan – we met him in the book “Tiny House” when his boyfriend Paulie found love with someone else. It wasn’t that Paulie is an asshole but Ryan is a very lonely and tragic figure. Both Ryan and Glenn have a lot of healing to do but the question is once they get together and sparks fly, can they be together and heal each other at the same time? When they head to Buchanan House for a weekend a bit of magic and love from familiar faces just makes everything perfect.

This is a heartwarming story which is full of hope and love. Glenn and Ryan are simply wonderful together, they have plenty of chemistry and a lot of heart. This is a wonderful addition to the series. I love that these guys have their chance at a happy ending within their own little world.

Blurb: Kyle Shimoda is an asshole magnet, has been for as long as he can remember. At forty-seven, he doesn’t see much chance for improving his luck in love. His friends who run Buchanan House, a gay retreat on the central Oregon coast, know he wants to find “someone nice” to settle down with, and they set him up with Officer Brandon Smith. Kyle has a turbulent history with law enforcement, but he can’t deny his attraction to the buff cop.

Brandon has been a police officer in Lincoln City almost since the day he graduated from high school over thirty years ago. He’s cultivated the facade of a serious, disciplined law enforcement officer, but beneath his overdeveloped chest beats the soft heart of a drama queen. A cancer scare shifts Bran’s focus from finding a serious relationship to having as much sex as he can—putting his goals squarely at odds with Kyle’s. If he can’t find the courage to be honest about his feelings for Kyle, the happiness they’ve both been searching for could slip through their fingers.

Review: Charley Descoteaux is a new author for me so I wasn’t too sure what to expect. I have never really been a fan of new to me author’s works but only because I have a certain type of book that I like. When I first saw the title I figured it was a bit closer to a mystery or suspense; that is until I read the blurb.

When I saw that Brandon was a police officer I was kind of hoping for a story with a bit of danger to it but this is one of those tender love stories with a bit of twists to it. Brandon had at one time wanted a serious relationship, until he thought he might have cancer. Then it was an all-out sexual desire type of thing, well until he met Kyle. However Kyle is not what Brandon had expected.

Kyle had been profiled once before so the thought of coming across any cop made him feel scared and ashamed. However time will show that Brandon is not like the cop that had hurt him. Now it would seem that these two needed to figure out what they truly wanted and needed, before they lose it all.

Now it is a very cute story but it comes off very stiff and dry. The author used certain words so many times over that it lost the appeal to me. I am afraid that through most of the book I just skimmed over it just to get through the book. I couldn’t connect with either man nor the story, which is not very good for me. I am afraid that if this authors work is like this particular book I probably won’t be reading to many stories by her. I am afraid that this book was not for me.

Portland chef Paulie Nesbitt is head over heels in love with Nathan. They’ve been drinking buddies with benefits for years, while Paulie has not-so-secretly yearned for more. Paulie’s extra pounds and self-doubt have kept him from acting on his feelings. Review:  Tiny House is the third installment of Charley Descoteaux’s series Buchanan House, a small bed and breakfast set up by friends Nathan and Eric. Eric and his romance with, Tim, the handyman that the friends hired to do odd jobs around the small resort was the subject of the first book, Buchanan House. Book two, Pride Weekend, was a short story about 2 guys that meet online and decide to meet at Buchanan House for a weekend of fun during Pride Weekend.

In Tiny House, it is now Nathan’s turn for romance. Nathan has something of a complicated love life, mostly his own fault, but that is the way life has gone for Nathan. Nathan has always had a thing for Paulie, but both have hesitated for years (about fifteen?).

At this point, though, Nathan is not in the best frame of mind. He has lost his lovers, two cousins who worked at Buchanan House and while he was not in love with them, he definitely felt a friendly kind of love towards the men. Soon after he also finds out that the friend he’s had a crush on years, Paulie, has a boyfriend.

Much of the story isn’t so much about the romance between Nathan and Paulie because it seems pretty damn clear that they are meant for each other and definitely have deep feelings for each other. Instead the story is more about Nathan being able to move on and coping with the various changes in his life – he does have trouble because he has many of his friends worried because of the amount of drinking he has been doing lately.

This is a wonderful and sweet story line. It isn’t really melodramatic or action packed, if definitely could have been more melodramatic. The whole novel is well paced, even if Paulie has a boyfriend other than Nathan for most of the story, and the drama that does take place is elegantly understated. This is thoroughly enjoyable and it is nice to see both Nathan and Paulie get their story. All the characters of Buchanan House are deep and complex characters and it is an absolute joy getting to know everyone.

I am left wondering if there are going to be more stories from Buchanan House… I certainly hope so!

Eric Allen, thirty-three-year-old line cook, moved in with his grandmother, Jewell, after a disastrous coming-out when he was in middle school. She raised him, and he cared for her when she fell ill. When Jewell died she left everything to Eric—angering his parents and older brother. The inheritance isn’t much, but Eric and his bestie Nathan pool their money and buy an abandoned hotel on an isolated stretch of the Central Oregon Coast. The hotel isn’t far from Lincoln City—a town with its own Pride Festival and named for a president—so they christen it Buchanan House after James Buchanan, the “confirmed bachelor” president with the close male friend.

Eric and Nathan need a handyman to help them turn Buchanan House into the gay resort of their dreams. Eric finds Tim Tate in the local listings and over the months leading to opening weekend Tim reveals himself as a skilled carpenter with many hidden talents. Eric falls hard for Tim, but before he can see a future with the gorgeous handyman he has to get over twenty years of being bullied and shamed by his birth family. It would be much easier if Eric’s brother Zach weren’t trying to grab part of the inheritance or ruin opening weekend.

Review: This is a real interesting book that has a really interesting historical background as to the name of the book/the B and B that is brought by the MC and his best mate.

Blurb: Being a witch doesn’t mean one can beat the devil forever.

Jeffrey Overton, unemployed IT professional turned poker player, pushes his luck once too often and runs afoul of the host of an illegal card club. The man sent to escort Jeffrey to a “meeting” about his supernatural winning streak arrives at Jeffrey’s crappy North Portland apartment, lock-picking tools in hand and a charm to block Jeffrey’s magick.

Head muscle for said host, Mike Wells, is a Daisy from Daisyville. He isn’t a witch. What he lacks in magickal talent he makes up for in brawn, so he doesn’t expect the guy he’s after to overpower him. But once Mike renders Jeffrey helpless, he’d rather seduce him than bring him in.

Jeffrey and Michael ditch the “meeting” and end up hunting some of the same people they ran from, trying to get Jeffrey back into his own body. And that’s only part of the adventure.

The pair travel halfway across the country on the quietest road trip in history and find missing people, empire-building witches, and maybe even the families they’d both thought lost to them.

Review: I really had to think on this book after I finished reading it. It certainly is different and not in an entirely bad way. The characters and the world that was woven are quirky, even if it is filled with danger and, generally, a lot of odd people. Then again, I suppose that should not be wholly unexpected in fiction.

The story follows Jeffrey, he’s smart but he is also an unemployed IT guys and something of a gambler. And of course, the gambling gets him into trouble, which even Jeffrey knows is something he can’t get away from even if he is a witch. It’s through this that he meets Michael. Michael is sent after Jeffrey who is simply the muscle that needs to grab Jeffrey so that the man can (in a sinister sense) pay his debt.

This is a fast pace story with a good dose of insta-love, which is really needed if you want to consider this story a romance because part of the magick in the book involves body switching (which only appears in the blurb as a throwaway line that does not particularly make much sense).

You need to concentrate while reading this because things happen extremely quickly and the explanation is not always real detailed to make the reader stop and think. For example the word “Daisy” is used throughout the book and the best I could understand is that is simply a non-magick person (Muggle!). Jeffrey trying to find his is body is a big part of the plot and leads into a little twist in the plot which had me thinking, “don’t these guys ask more questions before going off to do something?”

All in all, I loved interactions between Michael and Jeffrey, even when Jeffrey was not in his real body. Jeffrey is hilarious – he is sarcastic and irreverent. Michael is the strong and stoic type, ready to be anyone’s hero.

Being a witch doesn’t mean one can beat the devil forever.

Blurb: All he ever wanted was to be a normal guy….

Phil Brask spends his days in the basement of his mentor’s Victorian home, converting legal documents into electronic format. When the pipe feeding the water heater bursts, Lee Redding arrives in the plumber’s truck and draws Phil away from the narrow focus of his computer and camera lens. Lee gives Phil hope for a life beyond the walls he’s constructed using the nesting habits of migratory birds and dense legal files, a guided tour through a world filled with romance and music…maybe even family. But there’s a reason Phil retreated behind those walls, why he panics at a simple touch.

Lee has a good life—working with his uncle and on his mother’s farm, playing bass in a horrible metal band, and hooking up when he pleases—but he’s always suspected something was missing. When he meets the hot photographer with the icy-blue eyes, he knows exactly what that something is. Phil isn’t like other guys, but neither is Lee beneath his carefree exterior. Maybe Lee’s the perfect guy to show Phil that everything doesn’t have to be done the hard way and “home” isn’t a four-letter word.

Review: A beautiful and dramatic look at two people learning to live life through the lens of their own experience, helping each other to cope and find love. The writing was smooth, the internal dialogue was seamless, the romantic scenes intense, and the plot was fast paced.
Phil has learned to trust just one man through his trauma, but knows that he needs more than the security of Jerry’s house, he needs to take a risk, to step out and experience life. This characters’ anxiety was so well written I could feel it, along with his minor successes. Each brave step Phil took had my heart pounding and expecting the worst. When it didn’t happen, I cheered for him, and when it did, I wanted to retreat to that basement with him.

Lee kept me curious, his intent and his own explorative personality had me smiling while at the same time I kept my guard up through the plot hoping he wasn’t going to destroy the bravery Phil had established in himself. I was very pleased to see a mirrored personality and an honest heart in Lee.

There are plenty of minor hurdles and then major dramatic events for both main characters, but they are survivors and that is what this story is about. Surviving adversity, rising above what others try to force on us, and beating the odds.
The important thing I saw in this story is that success was not just internal. Yes, Lee and Phil had their own demons to fight, and they worked hard to defeat them so that once they had met each other they were more able to make that relationship work.

But the secret to the healing and survival, in this case of Phil, is that at least one person stepped forward to be the hero, to be the support system and safe place for that healing to happen. The biggest hero in this story for me is not Phil or Lee, it is Jerry. Without the Jerry’s of this world, characters in story plots like this and in the real world would not have a chance. So, go Jerry! And congrats to Lee and Phil, two strange birds who found each other and made life work for them.

The Nesting Habits of Strange Birds is a great read, with plenty of surprises and “Aww damn that’s sweet!” moments.

Review: Curious Sustenance was one of those really fun books to read. It is sweet and charming with a bit of sensuality. I rated it moderate but all the sex is pretty much off the page, though it is very sensual and loving. This is just a great story and though it does center on Shibari (a type of bondage) it isn’t overly explicit.

I absolutely loved the story. I loved Ross. He really is a fabulous character and I give him props for going through with weightwatchers. I hated his ex, such a jerk. Miles is also hot and sexy. Who wouldn’t fall for him? The story has a decent plot and I loved the interaction of all the characters. I feel there is a little bit of everything in this story. I will say I wish the ending had been just a bit more conclusive but I was pleased.

If you like have wanted to read a story with a bit of bondage but not wanting a lot of explicitness, Shibari and this book is a perfect place to start. I highly recommend this to anyone that likes a good sweet romance, that is fast pace, holds, your attention, if you like BDSM, Shibari, weightwatchers, tight friendships, close family relationships, and some sensual mansex!

Blurb:   Jazz trumpeter Jake McKynnie is living a lonely existence in LA, convinced that’s the best he can expect from life. And for the first time in years, thanks to his son and Mason, he can actually imagine an exciting future when it comes to his personal life. Review:  A short story in the Comfort and Joy series featuring secondary characters from that novel. Jazz musician Jake, Stylist Mason, and Jake’s son DJ.

DJ has come to LA to live with his father and pursue his dream of becoming an actor. In need of a makeover, and thinking his father needs one as well, they head off to the local salon. Jake might be oblivious to the stylist that’s eyeing him, but DJ is not. DJ heads into town after sending his father back into the salon to talk to Mason. A quick thank you turns into a quickie in the restroom, a quickie that leaves both men wanting more.

Jake’s past still haunts him, and Mason’s is hunting him.

There is a lot of furniture stuffed in to a too small space. If this were a full-length novel and all the different angles had been fully explored it would have been better for me. As it was, it was confusing and scattered. I really wanted to like this book but overall I wasn’t overwhelmed, and the ending was too abrupt. I can’t say I wouldn’t recommend this author; Descoteaux’s novel Directing Traffic was fantastic. I just wouldn’t necessarily recommend this particular book.

Blurb:   Neil Sedwick expects to spend his vacation in a sleepy tourist trap mourning his late partner’s death. Instead, he puts his recently acquired CPR certificate to use and saves an elderly resident’s life. But it’s the survivor’s nephew, sexy middle-school teacher Ty Bigelow, who causes Neil to reevaluate his routine and consider reopening his heart.

Though the electricity between them is undeniable, Ty is struggling with his own feelings of inadequacy, and Neil is moored to the past. Even the healing peace of an old man’s garden and the ever-changing waters of the Oregon coast may not be enough to prepare Neil to overcome a crisis of the heart.

Review:  Short, Sexy, and Steamy, my three favorite colors! Although the sexiness is not overbearing and there is really only one HOT sex scene, it is only a 65-page novella; this was such a fun read.

Neil Sedwick is going through the motions in life after the loss of his partner of 18 + years almost 2 years ago. An accidental meeting on the street changes his mundane life forever. Ty Bigelow has suffered personal loss as well, even if not to the extent Neil has, so they are kindred spirits of sorts. The attraction is immediate and intense, but a simple misunderstanding pulls them apart before Neil can even begin to show Ty his true feelings. Will Ty realize that Neil isn’t trying to take control before he walks out of his life forever?

Charley packs a great story into this novella with amazingly well-rounded characters and a fantastic back-story for them both. Ty’s uncle and Neil’s longtime best friend add that little something extra to the story, just to take the reader outside of the romance between the two ML. One of the best “first times” I’ve ever read as well.

Like romance, steamy guy on guy action and a HEA ending? This is a must read then, and it’s short so you will just breeze through. I’ll definitely be reading this one again though.
