Blurb: When his three-year-old daughter is kidnapped, Eric Wilson doesn’t have many options, and time is running out. With nowhere else to turn, he reaches out to his ex, influential businessman Brock Vencenza, whose money and contacts might be able to save Josie.

Brock never got over Eric’s loss, and he’s more than willing to help when Eric needs him most. Together with law enforcement and private security, they embark on a twisting investigation to find the little girl – and who wants to hurt her and destroy both men in the process. Under the circumstances, confessing he still has feelings for Eric would be inappropriate, but Brock can’t deny what’s in his heart. He doesn’t know if their love can be rekindled or if he can even protect Eric and Josie. But one thing is certain: Brock’s determined to be the hero in reality that he is in Eric’s eyes.

Review: Unlikely Hero is a really well written story of second chances, the family you make with a rush of danger. Written by Sean Michael, I really looked forward to listening to this audio, mostly because I don’t think I’ve come across a book by Michael that I didn’t at least like. I also love how Michael has a knack for weaving wonderful child characters into stories as well, which is where many of his characters form their own families.

Jeff Gelder did the narration for the audio, which I thought was a perfect choice. I’ve heard Gelder perform a number of different books before, but I think he just really nailed this one. Specifically, I think his voice and tone was flawless for the main character, Eric. He also does a pretty good voice for Eric’s little girl Josie.

Eric and Brock are interesting characters, especially since we get into the story where these guys have a very well developed and described past. They had been together and in love when Eric broke up with Brock ten years earlier and they never lost their love for each other in the intervening years. There is no animosity between them, in fact it’s like that one friend you have where you don’t talk to them for years but you get back in touch and it’s like none of those years or months have passed, you just fall back into the old rhythm. However, in this case it’s more of a case they had Mr Right, they were simply in the right place at the wrong time. More than anything else, though, Eric had feared Brock drifting away because Brock was a rich businessman and Brock a high school teacher.

Time has been kind to them for the most part, Eric has adopted a little three year old called Josie (she is totally adorable) and he is mostly estranged from his family. For Brock while there had been a few men in his bed, he admits that he had hardly changed at all (probably a good plot device so that we can focus on the danger and allow the romance to just happen). I think if I have any real problem with this book, it’s that they were apart for so long before coming back together.

When Eric’s little girl is kidnapped, he cannot think of anyone he can trust more to help him than his ex, the rich and handsome Brock. Brock has never stopped loving Eric and when he finds out what has happened he will do anything to help. It’s not a smooth and clean ending to the ordeal though, and Brock becomes very protective of Eric and Josie. Brock had never wanted a family, another part of the reason why Eric broke up with him, but being in Eric and Josie’s life brings him the discovery that maybe life could really be a compromise of what he and Eric want most and they might just find their HEA.

While it’s not insta-love, there is a definite feel of things just falling into place between the men automatically. For that reason, despite their past, I do wonder if people that don’t like insta-love will have the same reaction to this relationship, especially with a ten year gap.

As for me, I absolutely loved the book. The dynamic and connection between Brock and Eric, as well as the kidnapping and psycho storyline was enough for me to forget some of the little things that should annoy me, as well as the fact that I figured out who was behind the kidnapping well before the end. The two men had fantastic chemistry and very definitely belong together!

Review: Daddy Needs A Date is a standalone book by Sean Michael. Since reading more of Sean Michael’s work, particularly through Dreamspun Desires, I’m totally getting into the writing style and now look forward to Michael’s new releases. For the most part, they are usually quite happy and fluffy stories, with some adorable children and strong themes of building families and bringing together people in a way that is totally relatable and believable. In short, Sean Michael has recently made it onto my seemingly long list of authors I must read these days.

The narration of this novel was performed by Stever Balderson. I didn’t recognise the name, but when I looked in my audible library, I found that I had listened to Balderson once before in the past, performing Michael’s novel Add Love To The Mix. I remember not only loving that book, but also the performance, so it was just another reason to look forward to starting and savouring this story. In terms of the current performance, Balderson has once more done a fantastic job bringing heart and depth to the characters, not only the two main characters, but to a handful of very important background characters. I think he has a real knack at capturing the emotion and urgency of an emergency worker during the action scenes, but also successfully brings it down to when the character is home and has to discover the joys of building a life and settling down. He also brings great depth to a single father who is very lonely, as well as an enjoyable performance on the child characters who adore their father because he is the centre of their world.

As for the story itself, which I’ve just alluded to, Sean Michael has written a beautiful story of two men trying to find their way in the world. There is so much love and emotion that I found myself quickly lost in the plot and cheering on the men who have so much chemistry, they just need to learn to trust their emotions and give love a chance.

For both MCs, their lives are dominated by caring for others: Ryan Withers is a young father with four daughters. When he was fifteen and still unsure of himself, he got his high school girlfriend pregnant. The girl didn’t want the baby but he did, and with the support of his wonderful mother, he became a single father. Later down the track, in recent years, he lost his sister and brother in law, and necessity led to him adopting his orphaned three nieces. Life hasn’t always been easy, but Ryan has not only become a great father and has learnt to juggle his home and work life. Unfortunately, though, his juggling act does not help him meet new people, especially potential boyfriends. With a well-meaning mother and a concerned teenaged daughter, Ryan finds himself set up on a date with a nephew of a woman that his mother knows. Ryan is not happy, yet he is touched by his daughter’s concerns, and so he swallows his pride and goes on the blind date.

Alex Bernot is a dedicated disaster relief worker. With no real close ties other than the aunt he lives with in between trips in disaster zones all over the world, Alex has no reason to stay still or settle. However, things begin to change when he set up on a blind date by his aunt. It starts off a little rocky to realise that Ryan has four kids and he was about ready to hit the brakes right then. But something, some feeling, propels him forward and the men begin to get to know each other. Falling in love is the easy part, the truly difficult part is Alex’s work and need to travel into dangerous zones with little or no communications back to the States. My heart broke for Ryan as he was left to keep things going, however, with four girls it doesn’t matter how understanding Ryan is when Alex has to learn what it truly takes to have a family that depends on him for love.

This book is sexy, there is low angst and overall, while it is relatable it probably does go towards the fluffy and sweet kind of things. This is a great book when you are looking for something easy to listen to, the performance is excellent, if you want a no-nonsense kind of romance or coming down for a book that broke your emotions. I think for me this will be one of those books I’ll listen to again on a flight to pass the time (because I never listen to new stories when I’m travelling).

Blurb: Firefighter Jason “Jase” Weller and EMT Scott Bronson are living the perfect life. They work together in jobs they love, they live together, and in their downtime, they still can’t get enough of each other. It’s been six amazing years. Then on Christmas Eve, Jase’s former lover Elsa shows up with a six-year-old girl in tow. The strung-out junkie claims Kerry is Jase’s daughter and it’s his turn to care for her, and then she walks out.

Shocked at both the fact that Elsa is now a junkie and that he has a daughter he never knew about, Jase nonetheless steps up to the plate as her father and Scott offers his full support. Having an instant family comes with plenty of challenges, and the two men work to deal with sweeping changes in their lives and to make things right for Kerry.

It’s not going to be easy, and their new circumstances test them and their relationship like noth-ing ever has. They’ll need all the love they have for each other–and the love they discover for their daughter–to keep from breaking apart.

Review: Add Love and Mix is a totally charming book by Sean Michael, an author that I feel I am only starting to appreciated within the past year. Michael seems to have a knack with creating relatable characters that are both ordinary (thus making them relatable) and yet extraordinary (which makes the story interesting). What I love most about this book is that this isn’t so much a romance of relationship that is starting, it’s the story of a well-established couple who go through an extremely turbulent time which changes their family.

The narration of this book was done by Steve Balderson, who is a totally new narrator for me. Overall, his voice lent great depth to an already awesome book. His voice suited both emergency service worker MCs. I’ll definitely look forward to more books narrated by Balderson because this was simply a fantastic narration.

The story itself about firefighter Jase Weller and EMT Scott Bronson. The two have been together for six years and they see each other at home and work. They never had a reason not be scheduled on the same roster rotation at the fire station they work out of and they have been living a blissful life. All that changes close to Christmas when Jase, who is bisexual, has an unexpected visit from his ex, Elsa, who had been seeing before he got together with Scott. A lot has changed with Elsa and the main part is that Elsa turns up with a little girl, saying that she is Jase’s and that she doesn’t want the kid anymore.

It is a totally heart-breaking scene, especially after hearing of the palpable love between Scott and Jase. This is going to rock their world and their family. But kind and caring Scott immediately makes a rapport with little Kerry. But there is a ways to go before their happily ever after. Both men have to deal with this massive change to their family. Jase must understand what it is to become a father and to begin getting Kerry settled. Of course, Scott is right there next to Jase, supporting Jase and taking on as much responsibility for their daughter as the little girl deals with feelings of being rejected from her junkie mother. Add on to this Scott’s own baggage of knowing what he wants to do – he feels for Kerry because he was adopted by his parents – but the stress can get to even the most sainted of men.

This is the out of the ordinary story of two ordinary men bringing their family together and I loved it. Totally sweet and worth the read!

Review: I always like to have a bit of look over of Dreamspinner’s Greatest Hits collection at the end of every year. For the most part, I am always satisfied by the novels featured. I’m going to change up the review format to include an individual heat and heart rating for each of the five books featured. I’m not going to go into too much detail either, just a quick summary on my thoughts of the book and an equally brief summary on the overall plot.

Anna Martin - Five Times My Best Friend Kissed Me Cover ssFive Times My Best Friend Kissed Me by Anna Martin
and One Time I Kissed Him First

Rating: Low

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖 3.5 Hearts

This is a friends to lovers type of story, between two besties who have been fighting an attraction between each other since they were children. I’m not entirely familiar with Anna Martin’s work, so this was an interesting one for me. This is a charming tale and quite cute. I love how we get to know the characters so deeply before they get their HEA. I understand that this is greatly due to the format of the novel, the five times Scott kissed Evan is presented to us out of chronological order. Despite liking the premise (usually a sucker for these types of novels), I personally didn’t mesh well with the format and thought that it prevented me from relating to the characters, though I’m sure others will enjoy this one.

Sean Michael - The New Boy Cover ssThe New Boy by Sean Michael

Heat Rating: Explicit

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖 4 Hearts

The New Boy is the first book in the Iron Eagle Gym series by Sean Michael. I was curious about this book because I love Sean Michael, although for me BDSM books are usually hit and miss for me. I think I enjoy books by authors that understand the lifestyle, rather than others that make the book seem like a flimsy porno. And so, long story short, I did enjoy The New Boy. Lance is a photographer just won a once in a lifetime contract to shoot photos of models in an exclusive BDSM club, the only problem he has is finding models. One model that he does meet is Tide, he is not only a model but he’s also a Dom. I loved the introduction to the host of characters and the careful way in which the relationship between Lance (the sub) and Tide (the Dom) is defined and how it works. They are contrasting characters, Lance is quiet and shy (almost naïve), while Tide is in your face, a little cocky and knows what he wants. In short they are the typical sub/Dom duo. The only issue I found was that there was not a lot of development of either main character.

Grace R. Duncan - Beautiful Boy Cover ssBeautiful Boy by Grace R. Duncan

Heat Rating: Explicit

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖 2.5 Hearts

You know how I was just talking about those hit and miss BDSM novels? Yep, this is one of the misses for me. In part I think it’s because of the couple of Grace R. Duncan books I’ve either heard the audio for or read, I’ve always found myself struggling with connecting to the characters I think it’s now safe to say that I find the author’s style not to my taste.

This is an insta-love BDSM romance, so I know that will turn off a number of people alone. Also, I know people that don’t like orgasm denial in BDSM, yet the BDSM itself is very basic, so there is not really a lot of balance in terms of the sex play. Mal is the Dom and after tragedy struck in an ill fated relationship, he decided to turn his back on the lifestyle. But Kyle, a sub he wins at a charity slave auction, is the young man that brings him back into the lifestyle. There is danger in the form of a serial and a heck of a lot of baggage from both men.

The other thing is, I swear I’ve read a book with a very similar storyline. I’m certain it’s a different book and one that I read sometime in the past couple years – I’ve definitely not read this book before. There are details that I remember from the other book that aren’t in this one. Regardless, I can’t remember what book it was, so maybe I’m wrong.

Kim Fielding - Rattlesnake Cover ssRattlesnake by Kim Fielding

Heat Rating: Low

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖💖 4.5 Hearts

This is a charming book. Although I missed it’s initial release earlier in the year I looked forward to it mostly because I love Kim Fielding’s writing. This story has a lot of heart and a sweet romance between drifter, Jimmy Dorsett and small town, average guy Shane Little. Jimmy’s encounter with a hitchhiker has him heading to Rattlesnake to deliver a letter that has come so many years too late. Shane helps Jimmy when he breaks down and the sparks light immediately between the guys. Jimmy first fights his drifter instincts, but later this turns into fighting to keep them when the prospect of settling down with Shane scares him. These guys are great together, they have a lot of chemistry but the romance is sweet.

Michael Murphy - The President's Husband Cover ssThe President’s Husband by Michael Murphy

Heat Rating: Low

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

By far my favorite book of the collection. This is a novel from the Dreamspun Desires line, which I fell in love with earlier in the year when I heard the audio for the book. My initial thoughts haven’t changed between hearing the audio and reading the novel. Essentially, this is a story of a relationship that becomes strained due to stress. Specifically, it’s the new POTUS and his husband who are struggling between the sudden inauguration from Vice President to POTUS within the space of an hour, and the President’s husband who wants to maintain his life as doctor and med school professor while battling the conservatives that believe that the very male President’s husband cannot be in the spot light.

Review: The Librarian’s Ghost is the second book in Sean Michael’s The Supers series. I’ve been really looking forward to reading this one after really enjoying the first book, The Supers. Not only that, I’ve enjoyed a number of Sean Michael’s books in the past and totally keen to give the author another go. I don’t think you need to have read the first book to enjoy this one, but since I loved the first book I totally recommend reading it if you haven’t already.

This is a fun story that reminds me something of a gothic romance. You got the big, old family estate that has more things that go bump in the night than you can poke a stick at. You have an almost recluse-type owner who inherited the place from his grandfather. Then you got the stranger who comes to help uncover the big mystery that is holding spirits to the home.

That’s the key elements. Now for the MCs: one is the cameraman for The Supernatural Explorers, the group of friends who investigate haunted buildings, partly in the hope to make a television show. Will has been on enough cases to know that ghosts are real, but he still has a healthy skepticism.

Their client, Payne Macgregor, is a quiet librarian who likes to keep to himself and has painstakingly tried to renovate the rambling family mansion that he had inherited from his grandparents. His grandmother, who had recently died, hadn’t exactly made it a secret that there were things that could hurt Payne in the home. However, it took Payne some time before he gave into the fact that he had ghosts. He just needed to find someone, or some people that could help him get rid of his angry housemates.

As I said before, the story is fun and I don’t want to give too much away. This is a story that incorporates ghost hunting with family folklore. It’s the stories from the Macgregor family’s past that give the most important details. The problem is Payne doesn’t know how to handle it all.

If you’re not sure this is the type of book for you, I recommend this one for people that like watching supernatural investigations and would be intrigued in reading one where there is some great romance.

Review: Rec helps Barclay in so many ways. I liked the dynamics of these two characters. One trying to put his life back together while struggling with his physical limitations and self confidence. The other being there for him in every way. Rec was a gentle man with compassion and understanding that did wonders for Barclay.

Barclay struggles with everything he has been through so far. Which I understood. There was a lot of sex in this book which at times was too much because I would have preferred more story. But that’s me.

I did feel like this story was incomplete by the end. Too many unanswered questions that I assume will be addressed in the next book. I would have liked to see more interactions between the gym members in this story given the circumstances.

Other than those things it was a wonderful story that I enjoyed.

Review: Christian and Peter are the focus of this story with Toby’s stalker finally behind bars. Christian is a former soldier and is having a hard time submitting to Peter. These men love each other dearly and Peter is patient and not willing to give up on Christian.

I loved how Peter tried different scenes to see if they would help with Christian’s issues. Never pushing too hard and when they did not work he figured out something else. I also found it cute that Peter was constantly distracted by Christian.

Great read.

Review: In this book we see a new business open and Toby is ecstatic and immediately begins sculpting in his new studio. Damon is happy yet concerned when the stalker yet again throws their world into chaos.

We also learn more about Peter and Christian. Christian is struggling with his d/s relationship with Peter. But Peter is not giving up and finds different ways to ease Christian in the lifestyle.

I liked this story as the stalker is finally revealed and we learn more about Christian and Peter as opposed to only the story being about Damon and Toby.

Great read.

They’re even better in the bedroom, where Toby is learning all sorts of new things and Damon is happily pushing his limits.

They’ve almost forgotten that someone doesn’t seem as happy with their closeness as they are, when Toby walks into his studio to find it trashed and his little apartment ransacked. Are the authorities going to be able to apprehend the culprit before Toby decides the best course of action is to remove himself from the equation?

Review: The aftermath of book two leaves Toby shot in the shoulder and recuperating with Damon’s help. The perpetrator is still on the loose and continues their threats but Toby is focusing on Damon and their further explorations in the bedroom.

I loved that Damon was there for Toby. Toby for his part was brave and responsive to what Damon wanted as well as to his own fantasies.

Great read.

Review: Robin and Stack broke up several months ago. Since then they have both moved on with their lives. A chance meeting sets the flames of passion rising again. But can they learn to talk and communicate what they want and feel to each other or are they destined to repeat the same mistakes?

I enjoyed this story of these men and how they grew as the story progressed. Sometimes it’s harder to try than to let go. I think their trouble was not talking to each other. Sure it’s easy to talk about day to day things but much harder to express emotions.

Great addition to the series.

Blurb: Toby and Damon’s whirlwind romance continues, but can they find a balance between love and work? Do they even want to?

Toby can scarcely believe that his life has changed so much in less than two weeks, but it has. His predictable little life has gone from routine to sexually adventurous in a matter of days. And to be honest, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Damon’s just as into Toby, more interested in exploring with his new lover than spending all his time at the bar. Luckily things are running fairly smoothly there with his hand only occasionally needed on the rudder.

Their idyllic love affair has a few bumps to withstand, though, in the form of an intruder with a gun. Can Toby and Damon survive what happens next?

Reviewer: Shorty

Review: Damon and Toby are back in this sequel as they continue to get to know one another. Toby is still in shock about his relationship with Damon while Damon is spending less time at work and more time with Toby.

More sexy explorations abound as Toby and Damon explore each other further in the bedroom and where ever else the need them. Hot and sexy read.

Great story.

Blurb: Sometimes unpredictable is exactly what’s needed, but can Corner Pub owner Damon convince shy Thursday night regular Toby of that?

Damon loves his life—his bar, his employees and his beer. He especially loves Thursdays. That’s when the mysterious little red-head dances into his bar, drinks two honey wheat brews, and flits right back out.

Toby’s comfortable. He has a good job, great friends, and he gets paid to do what he loves—sculpt. His life is great, if a little predictable. And if he secretly wears a plug to Corner Pub every Thursday, well…that’s nobody’s business but his.

But when Toby meets Damon, his predictable little life flies right out the window. Damon shows him the big, wide world of the Dom/sub lifestyle, plugs and piercings, and teaches him that maybe, unpredictable is exactly what Toby needed all along.

Review: This book has mostly sex in it and some humorous scenes as well. By the end of the book I felt as though Toby was still confused so I was confused as to why he was in a relationship with a Dom.

Never the less it was an entertaining read as I watched Toby stutter and seem to do whatever Damon tells him to do.

After reading I’m wondering about Toby and whether he was actually ready for sex and a relationship all at the same time.

Good read.

Brock never got over Eric’s loss, and he’s more than willing to help when Eric needs him most. Together with law enforcement and private security, they embark on a twisting investigation to find the little girl—and who wants to hurt her and destroy both men in the process.

Review: Josie has been kidnapped. Eric will do everything he can do to get her back. He calls the one man who can help, the one man that he has always loved. He knows in his heart that the man will do anything for him, even though they had ended their relationship so long ago.

Brock has always loved Eric, but at the time their relationship had came to an end. That didn’t mean his feelings ever stopped. So when he gets a call from a very scared Eric, he jumped right in.

This story has quite a bit of twists to it. It kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out the crime. I was shocked at finding the ending but damn was it karma. The little girl was a cutie but she came off as a little brat, but I guess after being kidnapped one would expect it. The story was fully developed and the charaters were damn hot. I loved the secondary characters in this and would love to hear their story.

This is not normally my kind of book, but it was a blast to read. The suspense, danger, excitement with a twisted criminal was what made this story rock. I will definitely have to check this author out more.

I had a good time reading this and would definitely recommend it.

Blurb: When Jeff agreed to be the sperm donor to his best friend Beth, he never expected a tragedy to leave his newborn and three-year-old motherless. Beth’s loss has totally thrown his life into chaos: his lover has left him, his house isn’t anywhere near childproof, and his boss feels the restaurant has been patient enough with Jeff’s time off.

Donny has always known he wanted to work with kids, and he just finished his degree in early childhood education. He didn’t count on the prejudice he’d face as not only a male nanny, but a gay one at that. Job-hunting has been frustrating to say the least, so when he knocks on Jeff’s door and is greeted by the sounds of things breaking and a pair of screaming children, he thinks maybe he can begin this particular interview with a trial by fire.

Becoming the nanny to Jeff’s children might be a dream come true for Danny and exactly what Jeff needs, but are either of them ready to really be a family?

Review: Four weeks ago, his best friend was happy with her two little ones. Then tragic happened, and Jeff was now raising her children. He had been the sperm donor for his best friend Beth, and now his life has gone crazy. His boyfriend of over seven years decided he didn’t want to be an instant father and took off. He was in desperate need of help.

Donny is one hell of a good man. He loves children and just wanted to be a nanny to a nice family. His only problem was he was male and gay, something noone seemed to want to hire. That is until Jeff and his little family. The man needed his help and he just might have found his own family to love. That is until danger shows up and now their lives are in danger.

This is one of those stories that I can see myself reading more than once. It is a great story but beware you will need tissues. It was very intriquing, exciting and just a great read. I love how this author just puts together a story that makes it seem like you are right there with them all. It caught my attention from the start and kept it all the way to the end. This is one story that gave me everything I could ask for in a story.

I had a blast reading it and can’t wait to read more by this author. I would definitely recommend this book.

Blurb: With four girls, single dad Ryan Withers has his hands too full to look for romance. He’s caught off guard when his mother and daughter decide to play matchmaker.

Ryan and Alex enjoy each other’s company more than either of them expected, and they soon make a second date. Their lives are complicated, though, in very different ways, and soon family needs and their jobs conspire to pull them apart. They’ll need to figure out how to work through the things keeping them apart, but first they’ll have to decide if they even want to….

Review: Ryan was fifteen when him and his girl friend got pregnant. She didn’t want the kid so Ryan ended up being a full time dad. Then the unexpected happened, and he was raising his sisters three daughters as well. It did not leave a lot of time for a love life. So his daughter and her grandmother went into matchmaking mode. Set him up with a blind date. Talk about a stresser for sure.

Alex was one of a kind. Raised by a father who took advantage of the poor countries, he decided to go in the opposite direction. He works in disaster relief. It takes most of his time from other things. He didn’t even have a real home. And now his aunt has set him up on a blinddate. A man who has four daughters, will he survive or not.

I have read this book and one other by this author and he just has a way of writing that pulls you in each time. I am not to sure what I think of the kids in his stories but they are pretty much like all the ones you come across I guess. It is an entertaining story and what Alex does is amazing. However Ryan was the one that made a big hit with me. Don’t know many teenage boys that would raise their kids, but he was a winner. It actually feels like you are right there with them through out the whole story. It is a fully develope story with amazing characters.

I actually had quite a bit of fun reading this and look forward to reading more of this author’s work. I can’t say they are stories that I would read more then once though. I would recommend this book and can guarantee that it is a blast.

Review: Brett injured his shoulder pretty bad and he might be looking at the end of his baseball career. He was a grouch at is best, but he had the best backing him up. His boyfriend was always there for him. Benji just wanted the man he loved to heal, but he worries quite a bit. Each day just seems to get harder and harder. Now they were going to go stay several months in the boondocks with a therapist and his lover, who just happens to be one hell of a cook.

Ralph and Jean have the best set up. Now they were looking at helping another couple. His goal is just to help them, but he does it in the only way he knows how. However he seems to buttheads with Brett from day one. Where as Jean is just like Benji, has such a big heart. Then another problem steps up, and it will take the three of them to get Brett back to his normal self. Even if it cost him his baseball career.
