Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love by Holden Wells
In this short erotica piece, Flesh Hook is on their first-ever out-of-state tour supporting better-known metal band Skullrim. Guitarist Scott Thompson has learned a lot during these last three weeks, like the fact that when you’re playing away from your local fans, almost nobody pays attention to the opening band. Or how once the set’s over and the van’s packed, there’s nothing but time to kill until Skullrim’s done and you can finally get paid and get on the road to the next town. So when a fan wanders back behind the club during Skullrim’s set just to tell Scott how kickass Flesh Hook was, he gets Scott’s full attention, and then some.
“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” is a stand-alone story that takes place fifteen years before the novella “Roughing It,” which also features Flesh Hook’s Scott Thompson. In “Ain’t Talkin'” Scott is a young guy with his future stretching out ahead of him. In “Roughing It” he’s a man with tragedy in his past and a need to go to extremes just to feel a glimmer of something more than numb disconnectedness.
