No Master

(Bounty 03)
by

Christine d’Abo

No man in the galaxy inspires more fear than Korbin, the Admiral of the Black. His life as leader of the biggest pirate band in space leaves little room for trust, so when Korbin’s second-in-command disappears without a trace, he suspects the worst.

Zain Strand has left his life as a sex slave behind and risen within the pirate ranks. But he abandons it all to rescue an old friend from recapture by the slavers—even if that means a suicidal confrontation with his old master. He doesn’t expect Korbin’s arrival, doesn’t want Korbin’s help . . . but Korbin gives Zain no choice.

Posing as master and slave to infiltrate a slave auction, Korbin and Zain embark on a journey of lust that rapidly reveals their deeper feelings. When Zain’s old master discovers their ruse, Korbin must do everything in his power to save both their lives and their newfound love.

Publisher’s note: While books #1 and #2 in the Bounty series should be read in order, this book stands alone and can be read without the first two.

This title is an edited second edition, previously published in 2011.

Review: Paul is a little mouse shifter who is in love with his choirmaster. However he stands true to his creature, he is too afraid to let Cale know. So he spies in his animal form… that is until he is caught. When Cale brings him home with him, he is determined to stay as a pet. That is until Cale tells him his secret desires.

This one was absolutely adorable and so damn cute. I had a lot of fun reading this and would hope that the author might someday make this a bit longer. Mice shifters are so damn unique that you don’t see them a lot.

I enjoyed reading Quiet As A Mouse and would definitely recommend it.

Review: The first thing that caught my eye with this story was the title and then I saw the cover and I knew that I wanted to see what it was about. Then I took a look at the blurb and had to grab it. This author is new to me, so I was a bit leery of reading it though. However I am so damn glad that I took a chance, because this story rocked.

A few years ago Cameron had left NCIS after an innocent man died. He blamed himself for the man’s death. He had been an innocent man who just happened to be gay, but his Cameron’s partner was a homophobic asshat that pushed it. After that Cameron knew he no longer wanted to be in the Navy. He had not only quit his job but came out to his family. His father deserted him, but his sister stayed. However sometimes he wished she hadn’t, especially when she set him up on blind dates.

Cameron had found the body of a woman whose cat he babysits for. If that wasn’t bad enough, the sheriff was a jerk. Now guess who his blind date was. You guessed it none other than the sheriff himself. So here was a sheriff who at first doesn’t seem to know how to find a killer, to ending up going on a blind date with Cameron. Cameron owns a cat specialty shop and Jake has two dogs, sounds pretty good to me.

Now one would think that these two definitely don’t have anything in common, but it would seem that for them it is the opposite. It takes one date to realize they have something good and that they seem to make a perfect team when it comes to killers.

I have got to say that these two were the best characters I have come across in a long time. They are fully developed and there is so much detail that you feel like you know them from the start. The story is one of the best mysteries I have read in a while. It not only has the serious tone to it, but this story has so much humor in it that made it rock even more.

I hope that the author will turn this into a series with Jake and Cam the main characters in some future mysteries. I had so much fun with this and can’t wait to see what other stories this amazing author has out there.

Review: Tobias is one of those young men who is a chosen virgin. He is twenty-five years old and has a good life. Only a virgin can see a unicorn in his true self. So when he sees Amar he is shocked but accepting. Then Amar is in trouble and Tobias must save the man he has come to fall in love with.

Now this starts out pretty good, but I have to say that it gets pretty creepy. I didn’t much care for the ending at all. I think if it had been told in a better light that it would have made a hit for me. I enjoyed the characters quite a bit but the story not so much. I was glad that these two found each other though.

I would recommend it.

Review: Mark has a teaching degree, but is stuck working in a bookstore. It is not the job that he wants to do, so when he is offered a job he jumps at it. Staying in the village however changes you. His new employer is a shock to him, but a rather nice one. He is to teach his daughter. Then he finds out Thomas’s secret.

This was a very unique little story that I would have never thought possible. When I saw the title I was not thinking of what it truly meant, but I am not saying it was bad just different.

The characters were quite frankly enjoyable but the story was just a tad bit weird. This is a shifter story that you would have never heard of before. You have a young student who is not all that friendly but if you look down deep you can tell her heartache. An employer whose heart is on his sleeve but fear is there also. And a teacher who just wants to love. And a location that should never be seen after dark.

I would recommend it.

Review: Oh my god this book was so good. You have Miles Fox who has a secret gift he was told never to use lest he lose everyone he cares about. Now a medical student he goes against what he promised his grandmother and uses his gift to heal a man.

Unfortunately, it brings negative attention to him in the form of Dr. Gerald Stangl, who has been following Miles waiting and planning for the perfect time to have Miles in his clutches so he can covet the gift and have it for his own. I loved the background details on Stangl’s family and what they represented. It brought awareness and a deeper understanding to Stangl’s motives.

This story is full of twists and heart stopping moments. Dr. Stangl’s family has been trying to figure out how to get the gift out of one person and into another for a very long time. There are mentions of Nazi’s and prisoners and what was done to these individuals as result.

Spellbinding and mind-blowing it shows just how far one is willing to go to get the ultimate gift for themselves no matter the cost. Brilliantly written it is a roller coaster ride of deception, suspense, murder, experiments and love. I loved it and am looking forward to reading more.

Highly recommended.

When honey badger and cobra meet, there should be instant enmity—after all, honey badgers eat cobras—yet both men find themselves oddly drawn to the other. Romance blossoms, but can it survive captivity and beyond? In order to do so, Jiri will have to find a strength he doesn’t know he possesses and Miksa will have to open a heart long closed to anyone except his immediate family.

Review: Jiri had been sold to a collector when he was just a child so he didn’t act like a cobra at all. He was there for dancing and sex. The collector has brought in a new find, and to Jiri’s surprise it is a honey badger. Honey badgers and snakes do not get along, but these two just about make you feel like you are over heated.

This was a bit strange to me and I wasn’t really sure if I liked it or not. I felt bad for Jiri though. I was glad that Miksa turned out to be a great catch for Jiri. I had fun reading this and look forward to seeing what other stories this author has out.

I would definitely recommend this story.

Review: I had mixed feelings about this story and really wasn’t excited about reading it. What caught my attention was the cover, but not in the way that it should have. It gave me a creepy feeling and made me just want to put the book back down. Then the title was not as captivating as it should have been. However the blurb made the book sound pretty damn good.

Lexan is a complex man who had been sold by his own parents and forced into a lab to be bred. He was trained to kill men and worked for the mob. He was hired to execute those who needed to be killed. He was cold and determined, with no emotions. However after a kill he would need to release what was in his head in a way that would get him killed himself. He used his gift of having no feelings and killed. That is until one target made him start to feel.

Enzo was that target. He was a rancher who had mob ties. He had hired a young man to help around the ranch, not knowing that the man was to be his executioner. His family made it easy to live a good life, but he had to hide who he truly was. Being in and around mob families he had to hide the fact that he was gay. Now someone was trying to kill him, but he had a savior. The man sent to kill him, was the one that would save him.

In the story there is a part that seems to be missing to me. It left me with questions and very few answers. The problem with this story was that the previous stories did not really catch my attention enough to remember them, so I had not realized that I might just be missing something. Which actually tells me that this story could be read as a stand-alone, because I didn’t realize that I had actually read the first two. Now that might sound bad in a way, but it truly isn’t. It is more like a history of the characters and their lives up to this point, so it didn’t feel like I was missing anything on that front.

I liked Lexan quite a bit. He had been sold, raised to be a killer, killed with no feelings but you can see deep inside of him that he did indeed have a heart. It just took the right man. Now other than that, the story itself was well written. The problem is the fact that it gave me the creeps and really reminded me to stay away from dystopian stories. I am more of a reader of stories that make you laugh, and there is no humor in this story whatsoever.

Over all, the story fell flat for me, and it made me realize that this is one of those stories that will not be read more than once. I also hope that this will be the final story for this series, because in truth it is one that I did not care for. The characters yes, but the story was not for me.

That ruling made history, and now gay and lesbian Americans will grow up in a country where they will never be denied the right to marry the person they love.

But what about the gay men who waited and wondered all of their lives if the day would ever come when they could stand beside the person they love and say “I do”?

Here, four accomplished authors—married gay men—offer their take on that question as they explore same-sex relationships, love, and matrimony. Men who thought legal marriage was aright they would never have. Men who, unbelievably, now stand legally joined with the men they love. With this book, they share the magic and excitement of dreams that came true—in tales of fantasy and romance with a dose of their personal experiences in the mix.

To commemorate the anniversary of full marriage equality in the US, this anthology celebrates the idea of marriage itself—and the universal truth of it that applies to us all, gay or straight.

Someday, by B.G. Thomas

Lucas Arrowood is walking to school on his first day of kindergarten when he meets Dalton Churchill—a boy who stops and helps him tie his shoe. He knows from that moment he is going to marry that boy one day.  “Boys can’t marry other boys,” his mother explains, but that doesn’t stop Lucas. He knows what he wants.

He and Dalton become best friends—and then, no matter how much he resists, Dalton falls in love with Lucas. Dalton’s very conservative family can’t accept that their boy loves another boy, but finally Dalton stands up for love and for Lucas. Still, he declares he won’t marry Lucas until it is legal everywhere. He hates the “Commitment Ceremonies” gay men have. They aren’t the real thing. Why bother?

So Lucas waits for his day. The day same-sex marriage finally becomes legal and he can be joined forever with the love of his life.

Flames, by J. Scott Coatsworth

Alex and Gio had a big fight, and Alex ran away. Then a fire at home destroyed the life they had built together, and threatened to take Gio away from him.

Alex had always thought love was enough to keep them together. Why did they need wedding rings or legal certificates? But now, with Gio lost in a coma, his mother has banished Alex from his side.

What if Alex’s voice is the only thing that can bring Gio back from the brink? Their memories are all Gio has left, and the urge to just let go is getting stronger.

Still, nothing can keep Alex from Gio’s side. If it’s against the rules, he’ll break them. In stolen moments alone together, Alex fights to bring him back, one memory at a time.

Destined, by Jamie Fessenden

When Jay and Wallace first meet at an LGBTQ group, they have no idea they’ll be dating six years later. In fact, they quickly forget each other’s names. But although fate continues to throw them together, the timing is never quite right. Finally they’re both single and  realize they want to be together… but now they can’t find each other! With determination and the help of mutual friends, Jay and Wallace can finally pursue the relationship they’ve both wanted for so long.

It’s only the beginning of the battles they’ll face to build a life together.

From disapproving family members all the way to the state legislature, Jay and Wallace’s road to happily ever after is littered with obstacles. But they’ve come too far to give up the fight.

Jeordi and Tom, by Michael Murphy

Living as an open, loving gay couple in the rural South isn’t easy—even today.

When Jeordi and Tom move in together and come out to their families, Jeordi’s family does not take the news especially well. When yelling doesn’t work, they send in one sibling after another to try to separate the couple. When that fails, they call out their pastor to help Jeordi see the error of his ways. But Jeordi’s love for Tom is greater than anything they throw at them.

When an accident sends Jeordi to the hospital, his family goes too far when they try to keep Tom from visiting his partner. Jeordi and Tom are determined to do everything in their power to gain legal protection so this can never happen again. But when a bigoted county clerk refuses to issue them a marriage license, Jeordi decides a big, bold effort is called for, which is precisely what he sets in moVon so no one can ever separate him from Tom again.

Greg Dwyer and Kyrie Li are living the glorious couple life in New York City. Or are they? When struggling actor Kyrie lands a modeling job, he’s ecstatic to have extra cash to spend on his best-friend-turned-boyfriend.

Greg is probably to blame if Kyrie is drawn to the openly gay and seriously beautiful Andy. With Andy, Kyrie can be himself, as loud and proud as he’s always been. But Greg’s sexuality stays firmly locked in the closest except when he’s with Kyrie’s supportive family or alone with the man he loves.

Can Greg find a way to stand up to Mommy Dearest and win back a love he fought so hard to reach? He discovers the road to pride begins at home and with accepting oneself first. Otherwise, it’s just a dead-end street.

One night an investigation goes horribly wrong, and a powerful ghostly manifestation sends Joe tumbling into a river. Spirit worker Owen Watson saves Joe’s life, and once they are back on dry land, whatever has been blocking Joe’s vision has been washed away.

Review: If like me you enjoy watching or recently enjoyed a Most Haunted (or something similar) marathon, then this is the book for you, this is the first book I’ve read by Ki Brightly and I think that it was an excellent introduction to a new author for me – although I thought that things dragged on a bit a places, I would definitely and seriously consider reading more by the same author.

This is not your usual romance. There is a bit of ghost busting and some pretty constant communication both helpful and malevolent spirits. The MCs, Joseph Appleyard and Owen Watson are very different and yet they are poles apart, which I think lends greatly to their forming relationship. They have both seen ghosts as children, yet they or rather their parents, dealt with their gifts very differently, making Joseph something of a Fox Mulder of the ghost world (minus the FBI thing) and Owen is a lot like the Men in Black (minus the shady government group).

Ok, so maybe the sci-fi pop culture references aren’t working so well… the point is one is certain of ghosts but still searching for something to help him believe, while the other knows exactly what he is dealing with and is confident in his work as a paranormal investigator.

I think it is these guys differences that work so well. It certainly helps their attraction. They meet by chance, although Owen already knows about Joseph, but it is ghosts that bring them together and it is ghosts makes these guys need to spend time together. That just happens to give them the chance to explore the explosive attraction.

As I said, sometimes, between the action – encountering some malevolent spirits and some, perhaps, as equally malevolent people – the pace of the story tended to drop off a bit. It wasn’t an entirely bad thing to happen but I have to admit that I got a tad bored for a few pages here and there.

Some of the dead minor characters added a bit f fun and a bit of mystery to the entire thing. Part of me just wished that the story point associated with Joseph’s childhood ghostly friend was picked up a lot earlier in the book; apologies for rehashing things that I thought were slow.

All in all, this is a whole lot of fun and I recommend greatly to those who like a good ghost story to spook them a bit.
