Review: The Nerd and The Prince by BG Thomas a proper fairytale, royal romance type story that is probably more than a few people’s guilty pleasure. This was the first time I’ve read anything by Thomas and I have to say I found his writing style very pleasing and easy to get into. This story was a lot of fun. Unlike some other stories, he did the drama and secret keeping thing without making it explode to provide more, and probably, unnecessary drama. The Prince knew he was falling in love and that he had to tell his nerd the truth and I liked how this all went down. It was a very refreshing change.

The story is simple enough. Prince Amadeo Montefalcone of Monterosia, a relatively unknown European principality, decides to run away so he can live a normal life, at least for a little, as an out gay man instead on being forced into marriage with a woman. The principality itself is fictional, but the town that Amadeo tell people he is from, Trieste, is near the Italian/Slovenian border. He runs away to small town America and becomes Adam, a cultured Italian man looking to experience a bit of the US. Then Adam meets his neighbor, the owner of a small book store and café/diner, who dreams of one day travelling the world and falling head over heals for his prince charming. The two guys have chemistry, there is no doubt of that, but there is, naturally, the obstacle of the whole gay prince thing and said prince not telling anyone his real identity as he falls in love.

The Nerd and the Prince is a totally sweet and fluffy story. It was fun just to unwind with, a true romantic story. I can’t wait to see what else BG Thomas has in store for us in this series.

Review: I approached this audio book with a little trepidation. Actually, make that a lot of trepidation.

I’ve recently had a rather, shall I say, mediocre experience with both author and narrator. Shira Anthony is a relatively new author for me, I’ve now enjoyed two out of three books I’ve reviewed. Likewise, for Peter B Brooke, I can’t remember the number, but I had one not so good experience and a few pleasant ones. And so, I cheated. I started to read the eBook to see how I would go before getting the audio. I am very pleased to say I was quite happy – with both the story and the narration.

Swann’s Revenge is very much an ugly duckling type tale. Graham Swann reinvented himself from the pudgy geek, Jimmy Zebulon, after a horrific time in high school. He had a massive crush on one of the star jocks, Dan Parker. But Dan had always stood and did nothing as Jimmy experienced merciless bullying from Dan’s team mates.

Now fifteen years later, Graham (Jimmy) has come a long way and turned his life around completely. It was so good to see that humiliated and bullied teen become such an awesome guy – sort of an F you to all bullies. He lost the excess weight, looks after himself well, has got a career that he has worked hard for and is insanely successful as the owner of law firm.

Things take a strange turn when Graham hires a new guy, who happens to be his high school crush, Dan Parker. Things have not entirely worked out well for Dan in some ways, an injury ended hopes of becoming a profession sportsman. However, the direct his life and career since took him has been nothing but great for Dan. Meeting his new boss, Dan is enchanted by the handsome man and is ready to do anything to take down his defenses and start something romantic. Dan doesn’t realize at all that Graham Swann is the kid he knew as Jimmy Zebulon – I mean, fifteen years later, he wouldn’t. But Graham has deep running scars from his time in high school and so Dan’s pursuit of the sexy guy is hampered without Dan realizing.

This is a super sweet book with a lot of heart. This is about redemption, getting over the past and finding (or rediscovering) love. That is exactly what I love about this story because the plot could have so easily become a horrible revenge story, but thankfully that didn’t happen. Dan also has a cute kid called Lacey and that was just the icing on the cake. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable and light-hearted read.

Review: Noah and Caleb are cupids but Noah is the rebel of them using his dust to create matches between people no one else would. After finding out what Noah is doing Caleb takes him under his wing to help him. I liked the idea of this story but I really did not get a feel for these two as a couple.

They hardly interacted and at times their scenes together seemed thrown in to the story. I did like that Noah had help from gods and goddesses with his insecurities as well as what was expected of him as a cupid. I would have loved this story better if Noah and Caleb had actually talked to each other more than they did.

Aside from that it was an interesting read with some conflict from the other cupids with Noah. Good read.

Review: Adrian’s sister has lost her mind. Lets not forget that family equals lots of drama. His sister, Abby is worried about her funding. Funding that is given to her by her cousin’s husband. To bad the cousin is crazy as hell. So when another cousin is getting married, Abby has decided she needs to hire someone to play her boyfriend. A play boyfriend that Adrian wants to bag.

After Darcy was injured in the war, he decided that he liked to pretend to be a boyfriend for those who needed one. There is just one minor detail, he is gay. So here he is pretending to be Abby’s boyfriend and wanting her brother. A tangled web if you think about it.

There was only one part of this book that I hated, but it had to do with Darcy his love for his job. That and the fact that Adrian is just okay with it. Other than that this is one funny ass book. The characters were quirky and very charming. The story was engaging and entertaining, perfect for that mid day break. It caught my attention from the start and kept it to the end. I spent most of my time laughing.

I had a blast reading this and can’t wait to see what other stories these authors come up with. I would definitely recommend it.

Review: Niko is a made wolf. Made wolves are considered abominations and hunters are dead set on killing them all. Niko has been partnered with Guardian Alasdair. They two are investigating ritualistic killings of wolves. As the investigation intensifies the clues point to someone who wants the shadow gods favor.

Niko does not know a lot about what all he can do but is terrified of his partner finding out he has shadow magic and so it keeps it tightly bound. Allies are formed and Alasdair and Niko learn to begin trusting one another. This is a journey of Niko finding acceptance and learning to trust others.

The killer is a nasty piece of work. The rituals are brutal in how the bodies are found. I really enjoyed the story plot and the characters. I hope to read more about Grayson, the council and others as they series continues.

Great read.

Review: Ray has led a very colorful life. When he was younger he was running numbers for a bookie and delivering strange packages. Then he was given a choice police academy or prison after he was caught one time. So for over twenty years he was one hell of a damn good cop or should I say detective. There is one thing all cops have going, they never want to leave a case unsolved. However he was framed and lost the one job he loved. Now as a private detective, he was leading a very boring life. That is until Andy called him for help. It would seem his coldcase was not so cold.

Andy was a sweet young man who didn’t have a lot of things going for him. He had been thrown into being a server at his job and basically it was all work and no play. Then he walked in to his roommate and best friend being murdered. Now he was the target and he needed help.

The first thing I am going to say about this book is it is creepy. It has a very dark tone to it and a budding romance going on. I am not really a fan of long drawn out stories but this one was a shocking surprise. What was more surprising was I had never read any books by these two authors but if their work is like this particular book then I could see myself reading more by them. I enjoyed the characters quite a bit but I will admit that I didn’t care for Ray like I should have. Although they have chemistry that is off the charts, it was still a bit odd. Which was OK because the story itself was focused on the actual crime for once. That was what made this story rock for me. It was the danger, excitement, suspense, murder and a little bit of romance in it.

I will admit that the cover of the book was quite creepy also. I would have added horror to this book. I enjoyed it quite a bit and would definitely recommend it.

Review: Gray is hired to protect Sebastian. What starts out as job slowly turns into something more. Sebastian’s enhanced power was stunning to witness. I loved the slow burn between the two as the story progressed.

This story is not as intense as the other stories in the enhanced series but it still packs a punch. Seb is self conscience and reclusive. He doesn’t trust anyone. The experiments he is put through are mind boggling. I admit I felt his dad was extremely unemotional to the wants of Seb.

My heart went out to Seb as he struggled for his independence against family and a system that gives enhanced no rights. Gray was a rock for Seb when he needed it the most.

Great read.

Grisham heads to World of Aquatica, hoping to discover the identity of the stranger. When Grisham meets Cuzco Judson, the attraction is even more intense than his dreams. After a hot night with the man, Grisham learns a few secrets that turn his life upside down. Cuzco is an octopus shifter and believes Grisham is his mate. Review: Each book in the Beneath Aquatica’s Waves collection features a new romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order.

Grisham is about to get his eyes opened wide. He was the arresting officer for Solomon, although it turned out he was the wrong man. He coud not forget the sexy man that was wit Solomon and he was determined to find out. He just hadn’t expected to find out that his sexy man was a shifter.

Cuzco is a very cute octopus shifter. I would definitely love to come across one of his kind. He has found his mate. And things might be looking up, well as soon as they figure out who the bad guy is.

As always Charlie has given us a story that rocks. I admit that she is the only author who has given me a story about aquatic shifters that I find fascinating. Usually they are not the kind of shifters I like to read about. You get excitement, suspense, danger and some hot sexy times in these books. As always my attention was caught from the beginning and kept all the way to the end. This story gave me everything I could possibly want in a story and so much more.

I would definitely recommend this book and I can’t wait for the next one to come out.

Ebb and Flow by Andrew Grey ~ Audio Review

Blurb: To achieve happiness, they’ll have to find the courage to be their own men.

As first mate on a charter fishing boat, Billy Ray meets a lot of people, but not one of them has made him as uncomfortable as Skippy—because he’s drawn to Skippy as surely as the moon pulls the tides, and he’s almost as powerless to resist. Billy Ray has spent his life denying who he is to avoid the wrath of his religious father, and he can’t allow anyone to see through his carefully built façade.

Skippy is only in town on business and will have to return to Boston once he’s through. After all, his father has certain expectations, and him staying in Florida is not one of them. But he doesn’t count on Billy Ray capturing his attention and touching his heart.

Billy Ray doesn’t realize just how much he and Skippy have in common, though. They’re both living to please their fathers instead of following their own dreams—a fact that becomes painfully obvious when they get to know each other and realize how much joy they’ve denied themselves. While they can’t change the past, they can begin a future together and make up for lost time—as long as they’re willing to face the consequences of charting their own course.

Review: Ebb and Flow is the sequel to Andrew Grey’s Setting the Hook, the first two book in Love’s Charter series. Although this story is about a different couple’s courtship I recommend going back to listen to the first book, Setting the Hook, first to get a feel for the world, characters and overarching themes. One of the more fun aspects is that we get to catch up with the lives of William and Mike who we met in Setting the Hook. Those two guys have wonderful chemistry.

That said, Billy Ray (I know, sounds so hillbilly) and Skippy, the MCs of Ebb and Flow, also have wonderful chemistry. There is a lot of uncertainty on both sides and a boat load of emotion, but these guys work together so well, they have hot chemistry and they are just so damn sweet together.
Billy Ray is first mate to Bubba on a fishing charter boat (FYI and totally not a spoiler, Bubba got a promotion at the end of Setting the Hook). Billy Ray is stuck in a bad situation that he cannot help – his father is a small town preacher who is all about fire and brimstone. His father is over bearing, not only to his son but also to the locals (though no idea what the locals feel about that), and Billy Ray is resigned to the fact that no matter how hard he tries he will never meet his father’s lofty expectations.

On a charter, Billy Ray is drawn to Skippy (aka Harcourt Anson III, so snobby!). Skippy is in town from Boston for business, but he wants to make it fun. As a partner of his father’s law firm, his father works him all hours to the point of exhaustion and having zero time an actual life. And so we start, with instant sparks of attraction, the story of two guys unfortunately has to deal with the pressure of trying to please their impossible (and homophobic) fathers.

There is some slow burn and maybe some low key angst as Billy Ray and Skippy wallow in unrequited love. The guys are both worried about what would happen if they even thought of making a life together. Both of them expect retribution from their fathers, they do occur in different circumstances but overall, the story line for Billy Ray and Skippy is the same. Nonetheless, it was a joy to listen to them as they overcame their individual obstacles. I think that shared element both enhanced the story for me.

Greg Tremblay has done a tremendous job narrating both books in this series. His tone had me ensnared from the start. He conveyed the turbulent emotion of these troubled men so damn well.

For lovers of Andrew Grey, this story is another fantastic reason to love the man’s writing. If you started with Setting the Hook, you’re going to love Ebb and Flow. For me listening to the audio has enhanced the whole experience and enjoyment of this series for me.

Review: First off, I need to start with saying that I was torn with this review. I wanted to rate it 4, but knew that it really didn’t sit on par with other books I’ve rated 4, and while I also contemplated 3.5, in the end I settled on a 3/5 for this book.

The story is a sweet romance between high school music teacher, Joel, and home handyman/landscaper, Marcus. Joel has had a difficult life his family since coming out of the closet, but he has a couple of friends who became his adopted family. In fact, Marcus is brother to Joel’s best friend. They are both coming out of disastrous long-term relationships, Marcus has completely relocated to be closer to his sister, brother in law and niece. The two become friends but with a little help from their friends they discover the possibility of more between them. All this is happening around a large school concert Joel must orchestrate (pun intended) to raise funds.

Joel is a passionate musician and teacher and probably a bit stubborn, he is so easy to connect and relate too. I’m not sure I connected quite so well with Marcus, but he is also very likable. From the start, the two men together have a quiet but strong chemistry and are obviously going to find their way together.

Prelude to Love is part of the Dreamspun Desires line. It’s super sweet and has not a lot of over the top drama or angst and has a perfect little HEA for the two MCs. Written by Anne Barwell, who is a new author to me, I did enjoy the flow and writing style of the story as well. I just think the sweetness with not a lot of drama made this less exciting but perfect for the romantics out there.

Likewise, the narration by Andrew McFerrin was also quite good, although I cannot say it is the best that I’ve heard from McFerrin in the past. I think partly this is to do with the lack of proper drama in the book, but it still works. I particularly liked McFerrin’s ability to give each character, there are quite a few, their own unique voices. The only criticism I have about the narration was sometimes the accent would drift from New Zealand to Australian to South African and it did annoy me a bit.

However, being Aussie, I just have to accept the fact that many narrators will oscillate between these three accents quite often in audios.

Review: After listening to the audio book of the first installment of j, leigh bailey’s Shifter U series, I decided to get onto the next 2 books quick smart, ‘cos that just how I roll. Anyway, I was really looking forward to this because the world of the first book was fun and was interested in seeing one of my favourite secondary characters find his own HEA. Although this is a series, after reading all three books, I believe that these books can work either as a standalone or reading in order. I just prefer to read things in order.

The Thunderbird in question is Ford Whitney. He played the role of best friend to one of the MCs in the first book Stalking Buffalo Bill, and I was quite happy that we were able to meet up with the coyote and buffalo shifters a few times in this book. Ford is a barista at Buddy’s, a café located near the Cody College where Ford is doing his masters in bird migration (as a person with a PhD I appreciated the way that Ford was not made into a nerd with a one-track mind, which is something that really bugs me about academics, etc. in books).

Ford is then assigned to be the TA for the newest ornithology professor, and only human on staff in the biology school, Simon Coleman. The attraction between the guys is instant and the chemistry is off the charts. Yet Ford has been assigned the difficult task of ensuring that Simon does not question anything about the oddities that occur around the college due to shifter activity.

Both guys have a lot of baggage. Ford obviously is trying to protect the secrets of shifters, looking after some of the younger bird shifter students, and protecting the most important secret, that his family are Thunderbirds. Thunderbirds have been hunted almost to the point of extinction and on top of that they aren’t your ordinary run of the mill shape shifters either. Whereas Simon is completely human but comes from a family whose reputation has been discredited in the past because his grandfather and great-grandfather are certain that Thunderbirds exist. However, this belief and ongoing investigation, is not only putting him on the radar of the shape shifters, but also on the radar of the bad guys.

Chasing Thunderbird is a rather fun book and I found myself able to relate to the emotions and baggage of both MCs, although both are very different and quite often at cross purposes. I highly recommend reading this book and series to anyone who loves a good shifter tale.

Review: Each book in the Beneath Aquatica’s Waves collection features a new romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order.

Solomon lost his family at the age of eighteen, joined the military for a few years and then went to work as a guard for a very rich asshat. He was definitely not happy there so when the asshat’s son wanted to run, he let him. It got him fired and almost killed, only to be saved by one hell of a sexy man. A sexy man that claimed to be a shape shifting hammerhead shark.

Anthony was just swimming along when he smelled blood. As a shark you can imagine what he was thinking, only to find out that the man was his mate. A mate that someone had tried to kill.

Once again Charlie has not disappointed me. This story caught my attention and kept it there all the way to the end. I can guarantee that this is one of those stories that will be read more than once. So much so that I am going to go back and read the whole series again. This book gave me everything from danger, excitement, suspense and some hot sexy times.

I had a blast reading this and can not wait to get my hands on the next book. I would definitely recommend this book and the rest of the series.

Review: Flashpoint is at it again with simultaneous attacks against the residence’ of Sage and surrounding areas. Things are brutal and some are left injured or dead in the wake of the attacks. Some that participated are captured. John’s son Murray is badly hurt.

Trash finally reels in his lion shifter mates Brody and Tobias after they come on to strong and Trash runs. He gives them a merry chase until they learn to control themselves. There was a lot of different things going on in this wonderful addition to the series.

In the aftermath some of the residence’ of sage decide to leave Sage to live elsewhere in a safe Haven that sounds like heaven even though they have to start from scratch and build their place.

I loved everything about it except I wanted to know who were twenty eight residence that lost their lives in the attacks. The story never said and I wanted to know. Regardless, it was an absolute fantastic addition to the series.

Review: Each book in the Cade Creek collection features a new romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order. I would read book one in the Blaecleah Brothers first, it will start with the characters you will get to see in this story. There is one other collection that is also connected to these two that you might enjoy as well, Special Operations.

Happy knows everything about growing up around cruel family members but he has found love in his sexy deputy. He is surrounded by love and takes after his own name. So when Marc brings home a little girl who has just gone through hell, he wants to keep her. However there is someone that wants her and it will take the whole family to keep her safe.

I came across this author a few years back and have always been a big fan. She gives you a mix of emotions that makes your heart swell and you lips lift into a big smile. However she will also have you in tears and wanting to rip someone apart. This story makes what one young man go through to give forward what he has learned since he had been rescued. The story gives you love, joy, excitement, danger and so much more that will in the end give you one good story. It caught my attention from the moment I started reading and kept it all the way to the end.

I had a blast reading this and can guarantee that it will be read more than once. I can also guarantee that you will love the characters and their story quite a bit. Just make sure you have your tissues handy.

Review: Aidan has taken Jamie to his realm to mate him. Jamie tries hard to keep his secrets from Aidan. An interesting story that picks up where the first book leaves off. As the story progresses Jamie is at first determined to leave then slowly gets used to living with Aidan. Aidan for his part suspects Jamie is more than a vampire but has no clue as to what exactly he is.

Secrets are revealed in the face of a dangerous foe who sends his minions to deal a deadly blow to the dragons while attempting to take Jamie out. Twists and turns around every corner kept me riveted to the very end. The battle scenes were bloody and action packed.

I love this series. I am on pins and needles awaiting the next book in the series to find out what else is in store. I will admit to being a little miffed that Asa was only mentioned in this installment. I wanted to know more about where he went and how his life was now.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Review: Sean has done quite a bit of things that would be considered bad, but he always looks out for his friends. Stealing cars is what he is good at and what he craves, although he is damn good at fixing them too. Stealing cars and racing them seems to be his main drug of choice. He went in to the army to stay out of jail and lost one of his best friends to it. Now he tried to get out of that life, but his other best friend just can’t seem to stop. So he does it to help, but it almost gets him killed.

Ryker was also damn good at stealing cars and running with the Havoc motorcycle club. They seem to be a bad club to get into but then you see the good they are doing as well. Protecting those that need to be protected. Now he needs to protect the one man he loves.

I am not even sure where to go with this review. I can’t say that I like it or even that I hate it. It is a very long drawn out story that just didn’t keep my attention like it should have. It starts off a bit confusing and just kept on going. It is a very well told story but to me it had so much in it that it did the exact opposite of what it should have done. I liked Ryker but didn’t really care for Sean at all. His head is so far up his ass that I am surprised he could breathe. He does everything to protect his best friend, but his best friend needs his ass kicked to the curb. I didn’t like the way the whole book went.

It took so long to even get to the love part of the story that I wasn’t sure it would ever get there. If it had been written with the positive of the club instead of the negative it might have been a better read. When I started reading the book I was hoping that it was more like protection, body guard and kicking ass, but then I realized it was focused more on the idiots stealing cars. Total let down if I say so. The action in the story was not even a big impact in the story.

I am sorry that the whole book was just disappointing to me and I can’t say that I look forward to reading the next book in fear that it will come off the same way. We will see how it goes though. For now I am sorry to say that this book was not for me.

Review: I liked both Mal and Jory’s characters but found it hard to believe that Jory had no clue that he was something more than human. I mean with his abilities he should have had some idea. Mal’s deception I understood because of the job he took to find Jory and retrieve him.

The overall feeling of the book was good suspense. The ending was the icing on the cake but it felt rushed at times. The bad guy I figured out pretty quickly. I was disappointed with the fact that the story never revealed what happened to Asmodeus. He was never a key character but he was mentioned so much that I wanted to know.

Aside from that I enjoyed reading about Mal, Jory, Neal, louise and the dragon. They were all interesting characters that brought the story to life. Plenty of action scenes added an edge of your seat element to the book.

Great read.
