Balancing Act

(Shooting Stars 04)
by

Greg Dwyer and Kyrie Li are living the glorious couple life in New York City. Or are they? When struggling actor Kyrie lands a modeling job, he’s ecstatic to have extra cash to spend on his best-friend-turned-boyfriend.

Of course, Greg is suspicious Anders Berglund, the gorgeous and androgynous Swedish cover model the designers love to pair with Kyrie, is after his man. And maybe Kyrie encourages a growing closeness with the guy?

Greg is probably to blame if Kyrie is drawn to the openly gay and seriously beautiful Andy. With Andy, Kyrie can be himself, as loud and proud as he’s always been. But Greg’s sexuality stays firmly locked in the closest except when he’s with Kyrie’s supportive family or alone with the man he loves.

To make matters worse, Greg’s out-of-touch mom meets with financial ruin and moves in with the couple, forcing him into the closet in his own home.

Can Greg find a way to stand up to Mommy Dearest and win back a love he fought so hard to reach? He discovers the road to pride begins at home and with accepting oneself first. Otherwise, it’s just a dead-end street.

Blurb: Date night has never been hotter! Shannon and Gray are beginning to think they’ll never get “alone time” again. But Declan and Quinn have plans for these two desperate shifters. Sit back and enjoy Lynn Tyler’s latest short story in the bestselling Pack Mates series, Date Night.

Shannon’s getting desperate. Between teething, colds, and night shifts, he and Gray haven’t been together in weeks. Hell, he’s pretty sure Gray’s three nieces are working together to make sure he never gets any loving from Gray again. But it’s Declan and Quinn to the rescue and Shannon suddenly finds himself in a hotel room with an equally desperate mate.

Review: Shannon and Gray are committed to their relationship, pack, and family. But lately, between raising three little girls and Gray’s job at the hospital, the relationship part needs a little more attention. So when Declan and Quinn offer to watch the girls so Shannon and Gray can have a date night, it’s an offer they can’t resist.

Gray takes Shannon back to the hotel where they first claimed each other with the mate bond and the spark that has simmering just under the surface for weeks, finally ignites.

This is by far my favorite MM Shifter series. Tyler always pays extra attention to those little details and nuances that make each couple in her stories unique. Shannon and Gray are all but overwhelmed with the responsibilities of raising the girls, but they are determined to make sure each of them knows how much they love each other.

Stolen moments and kisses in the few minutes in between bottles, dinners, and bedtime stories just aren’t enough right now. They have a mutual itch that must be scratched.

Short, Sexy and Steamy! And just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Blurb: With a flourishing catering business and an acclaimed restaurant to his name, Chef Roman Geary had finally made it. Until his dreams go up in smoke, literally, when a fire devastates his kitchen. He finds a temporary home at the catering hall of the local fire company, putting him in close quarters with the attractive fire fighter Jacob Niemczyk, who proves himself as adept in the kitchen as he is at fighting fires.

While Roman is skilled in the kitchen, he finds romance a bit trickier, but the two find their way into each other’s arms despite missteps and inconvenient interruptions. Their relationship looks to be off to a smoking start until a massive fire makes Roman question how willing he is to risk his heart to a man who constantly risks his life.

They say that if you can’t stand the heat, you should stay out of the kitchen. But when food is your life and your heart is on the line, sometimes it’s the safest place to be.

Review: This is published by Liquid Silver under the banner of “Some Like it Hot” – stories about firies (yum!) and finding love in unlikely places.

Chef and restaurant owner, Roman Geary, loses just about everything when his restaurant and home just about burns to the ground. Since he also caters functions, he needs a kitchen to set up shop again and rents the kitchen of the local firehouse. Incidentally, it is the very same firehouse that attended the fire of his restaurant.

Almost instantly, there are lots of sparks between Roman and fireman Jacob Niemczyk (because all the hot firies are called Jacob in books). What was done nicely, though, that these guys don’t jump into bed with each other at first chance, and we get to know Jacob a bit before that happens. However, Roman fears for Jacob’s life, a common fear (and theme) with many spouses of fire fighters (and cops).

This is story is nicely paced, there’s plenty of emotion. The details about Roman’s cooking are sure to make you feel hungry. At times, there was more cooking and catering than fire fighting, but I’ll let that slide. This book, although is about Roman and Jacob, is primarily about Roman getting his life back together after losing his home and business in one fire.

My biggest problem that there wasn’t enough character development regarding Jacob, or at least I wanted to know more about his story.

Review: I wasn’t so sure about this story when I chose it, but I have to tell you that it was one of my better ideas. It is cute, funny and the fact that these two men were afraid to make a move on each other was just the icing on the cake. Griffin came down to help a friend finish his book and what he found instead was one hell of a sexy man. He took one look at Drew coming out of the water and wanted him bad. Problem was Drew was straight and he didn’t want to lose the friendship that was developing between them. To his surprise, Drew felt the same way.

This was a hot and very sexy little book. I had a blast with it and can’t wait to check out the rest of Jamie’s books. There was so much feeling put into a short story that had me gasping for breath. I would definitely be recommending this book because it was a fascinating little story. I loved the way the characters just jump off the pages at you and the way they react to each other. It was a delight to read.

My attention was captured with the first paragraph and kept it all the way to the end. Other than the fact that it was way too short for me, it gave me all I could as for in a story. Trust me you won’t regret reading this story.

Blurb: Fire fighter Lance Stuart is minding his own business when a man on the street stops him with a simple expression of gratitude. He falls into the conversation with the man, and learns that Jakob is far more than what one might expect from a busker. For starters, he’s gorgeous. He’s also funny, charming, and flirty. Lance immediately wants to get to know him better.

Jakob Fox spends his days performing on the sidewalk and his evenings in various coffee shops and clubs, reading his poetry. But he always takes the time to thank fire fighters when he sees them. He knows first-hand how much fire fighters risk and what they sacrifice. His father was a New York fire fighter, until he died in the line of duty. As a result, Jakob can show his appreciation, but he always keeps his emotional distance—from everybody. He also suffers from almost debilitating anxiety.

He wants to be with Lance, but he can’t handle the emotional stress of being with a fire fighter. Jakob needs to decide if they have a future, or if he should just walk away.

Review: This isn’t a hardcore read, it is rather relaxing. It probably helps that both main characters are extremely likable guys. In fact, Jakob is an absolute sweetheart. He’s easy going sort of person, sweet and sensitive. He performs his poetry most nights and busks for fun (playing his guitar). He also has the totally adorable (and kind) habit of saying thanks to every fire fighter he sees, all because his father died on the job as a fire fighter when Jakob was 13.

Lance is not as sweet as Jakob but still very likable. He’s the fire fighter that Jakob thanks for his service. Strong and reliable, compassionate and understanding, Lance only wants to help people, and has a heart of gold. The two seem polar opposites, but neither of them cares about that when there is chemistry between them! And there certainly is chemistry between the couple!

The plot reveals a reluctant Jakob trying to get over his hang up about dating fire fighters. This is where Lance’s compassionate nature comes in and where it’s obvious that Pepper Espinoza really knew what she was doing when she created these characters. The emotions of Jakob and Lance also come through in the text, which is always great and there are both some steamy and tender scenes between them.

This relatively short story is full of character background – very satisfying to read – as well as a steady pace plot as the uncertain couple try to figure things out. The ending seemed a bit rushed, but that was all right, the resolution was nice and left me satisfied nonetheless. This is the type of story that I think would be hard not to enjoy on some level and probably will leave many wanting more.

Review: An interesting imagining of a Steampunk world, ruled by cogs, floating cities, and air ship transport. A world where there are many paranormals, but of course different species should not breed, and among those there are different classes.

Cod was a perfect character to dislike right off the bat as intended, but I never did warm up to him. Bif seemed rather shallow and diffident too. I really hope this was not an attempt to write in the style of Christopher Moore, because if so, it fails.

I think there was supposed to be humor here. There is some good action in attempts to go unnoticed and to escape capture. The sex scenes are a bit predictable, not really unique, but fun.

My attention was piqued at the blurb, but there was more intrigue in that, than in the short story itself.

Quinn has been blessed with a very romantic mate. Twelve days before Christmas, the gifts start pouring in, some sweet, some spicy. But now the book and video game he’d purchased for Declan seem pale in comparison.

All it takes is a visit to an online adult store and a little help from Cullen to arrange for the best gift Quinn can give Declan.

Review: With Christmas fast approaching, Quinn worries that his gifts for his mate, Declan, won’t express his love for him. So he talks One of Declan’s betas into helping him set the perfect gift in motion. Now he just has to convince Declan that he is sincere, and that he truly wants what he is offering him.

Short, Sexy and Steamy… the perfect complement to this amazing shifter series. Declan and Quinn are definitely hopeless romantics and they cannot get enough of each other, cannot seem to be able to touch each other quite enough. Quinn hopes to give Declan the ultimate gift, to prove to his mate that he trusts him implicitly, now if only Declan will cooperate.

There was so much emotion conveyed in so few pages I was just blown away. But then, Tyler’s shifter stories are also emotionally driven. This is a must read series, I would say you could even start with this short story and make sure you can bond with the characters, then go back and start from the beginning.

Review: After reading the blurb, this book wasn’t quite what I expected it to be. Firey Josh Brooks has gone up the ranks to finally become a fire investigator, on his first assignment he runs into rehabilitated arsonist and ex-prisoner, Dylan Anderson. I really enjoyed Dylan’s character, just the fact he was sent to prison for arson was interesting. He also has an interesting back-story which I’m afraid has been constrained by the word count. Josh, on the other hand, is your average type of fire fighter and he severely lacks in the love life area. I get the impression, too, that he is lonely with probably only one best friend outside of work and a family who don’t talk to him anymore.

The plot seemed to me as if it should have had more suspense than there was, particularly considering the blurb. Then again, that’s probably just me wanting to know as much as I can. In saying that, the conclusion comes extremely quickly in the final pages and with little warning, as if saying ‘I know it’s near the end, let’s get a move on’. I say this because all of a sudden, Dylan down Josh’s throat (not in the good way), Josh catches some shit at work and then a dejected Josh is off drowning his sorrows where he suddenly solves the crime and has the evidence. A majority of the book’s action in the last eight pages!

Honestly, this is a good story to read. I just found myself unsatisfied by the conclusion. To me it felt like it needed to be longer.

Kyrie is an actor with a physical aversion to telling lies, a one-eyed cat, and horrible taste in men. His ex-brother-in-law and best friend, Greg, harbors a secret crush he can’t shake. After denying his feelings for Kyrie for too long, Greg finally gives in to desire one drunken night. Come the morning, the facts get twisted. Before they can clear the air, Kyrie follows his dreams to New York City, but could he also be running away?

A mistake from Kyrie’s past detonates their silence, and Greg is forced to confront the man he loves.
