It’s the winter of 1971 and FBI Agent Zack Pomeroy is hoping to make a name for himself when he’s assigned the case of the century—the hijacking of an airplane by D.B. Cooper. Zack’s used to hiding his sexuality but working with Duke Magruder is even more of a challenge. Not only do they do have vastly different personalities but also contrasting opinions on how to work the case. Nonetheless, Zack is able to earn Duke’s begrudging respect.

Until Duke learns Zack’s secret.

When Zack finds a lead on the case Duke not only refuses to listen, he also refuses to work with Zack any longer. Zack’s career and his assignment are at jeopardy but that doesn’t mean he’s about to give up on finding Cooper, no matter how many years it takes.

Hijacked Love is a blend of mystery and historical fiction with a bit of romance thrown in.

Ethan Stone!

Thank you for joining me today here at MM Good Book Reviews so I can talk about my newest release Hijacked Love.

The tale is set in the early 1970’s and involves the true unsolved mystery of the hijacking of a plane by a man known as D.B. Cooper. The man escaped with a large amount of money for the time and he was never located or identified. And, except for a small amount of the cash, the money never resurfaced either.

My story interjects my fictional main character, Zack Pomeroy, into the investigation. It looks at what it might have been like for a gay FBI agent in that time period. In this exclusive excerpt Zack comes up with a theory that D.B. Cooper may have been gay and how his supervisors dealt with the information he gathered.

Was it just coincidence Cooper used a gay character’s signature phrase and wore a blue hanky in his right rear pocket? I could see there being one coincidence, but two? No way. And who should I inform? It was critical that we have a complete profile of the hijacker, including his sexuality. We wouldn’t be looking for a wife and kids, but instead a boyfriend or lovers. We should be looking at gay bars and bathhouses and other such establishments.

I sucked in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. I doubted Duke would take me seriously, but I had to try. If he rejected my theory, I’d have to go over his head and talk to Donaldson. Then I would wait for the shit to hit the fan.

Back upstairs, I located Duke and leaned against the corner of his desk. When he looked up at me he scooted the chair back a foot, giving himself space to avoid the gay cooties, I guess.

I said, “I have some information that might be helpful.”

He crossed his arms. “Go ahead.”

I laid out my findings regarding the Dapper Dan books, the use of the term “No Funny Business,” and the hanky.

“What the hell is a hanky code? Never mind. I don’t want to know.”

“If I’m right and Cooper is gay, then this could be an important part of his profile.”

Duke rose but still kept his distance. He flexed his fists like he was itching to punch me. “Just because you’re queer, Pomeroy,” he whispered so no one around us would hear him, “doesn’t mean everyone else is.”

I sighed. “I’m not saying everyone else is, just him.”

“When you’re a hammer everything looks like a nail.”

“What does that mean?” I glared at him.

“Just something my pops always said. I think that ‘cuz you’re a fag you want to find other fags so you don’t feel alone. Birds of a feather and all that. It don’t matter how many other perverts you find, it don’t make what you do right.”

“This is about our case, not my life choices.”

“Drop it, Pomeroy.” He started to walk away.

“No!”

He froze then turned to face me again. “What did you say?”

“I said no. I’m not going to drop it. I want to show Donaldson what I’ve found.”

Duke lifted an eyebrow. “Is that so?”

I nodded and prepared for further argument. Instead, Duke shrugged. “Okay, let’s go.”

I followed him to Donaldson’s office and tried to get my nerves under control. He knocked then entered.

“How can I help you?” Donaldson asked.

“Pomeroy here has a theory about Cooper.” Duke flopped down in a chair in front of Donaldson’s desk but I remained standing. “I don’t agree with him, but I wanted you to make the final decision.”

Donaldson pursed his lips and peered at me. “Very well. Go ahead, Agent Pomeroy.”

I cleared my throat. “We’ve already discussed the theory that the hijacker was a fan of the Dan Cooper comics. I think he also read a series of novels that were a take-off of those comics. They’re called Dapper Dan, and the character is also an action hero. He uses the term ‘No Funny Business’ just like Cooper did.”

“I’ve never heard of these novels,” Donaldson said.

Duke snorted. “Good thing, too.”

My boss examined Duke for a moment before turning his attention back to me. “Who writes these Dapper Dan books?”

“The author is someone named Novae DeNiron. Phenix Publishing out of San Diego.”

“Why haven’t I heard of these books?” Donaldson asked.

“They’re written for a…select audience.” I paused. “They’re gay pulp novels. Written for gay men, with explicit sex scenes.”

Donaldson’s face blanched. He recoiled as if he’d been slapped. “Books for fags? What the hell? How did you find these books?”

Duke looked at me with a smirk.

“Uhh…I have a gay friend. He’d heard about the Dan Cooper comics and told me about the books.”

“You spend time with a queer?” He gave me a sideways glance as if having a gay buddy made you gay as well.

“He’s an old friend,” I said. “I don’t see him often.” I hated lying, but revealing my private life to Donaldson wouldn’t do anybody any good. Especially me.

“I don’t see how any of this matters,” Donaldson said.

“Sir, I believe Cooper is gay. I think it’s a significant part of the profile.”

Donaldson scratched his neck. “You think he’s a fag strictly based on these…disgusting books?”

“There’s one more thing. One of the witnesses said he wore a blue hanky in his right back pocket.”

“Is that supposed to mean something?”

“Yes, sir.” I paused and wiped the beads of sweat from my forehead. “In the gay community, there’s such a thing as the hanky code. At bars and such they wear different colored handkerchiefs so other men know what they like to do.”

Donaldson looked really confused. “What they like to do? You mean sexually? How many different things are there?”

“Well, according to my friend, Dapper Dan wore a blue hanky on the right side and that, uh, means…that he’s submissive.”

“I don’t understand.”

“He likes to get fucked,” I blurted out.

My boss put a hand to his mouth like he was going to puke. Duke, meanwhile, looked like the cat who ate the canary.

“Your theory is…ridiculous,” Donaldson finally said. He reached behind him and pulled out a handkerchief. “I carry a yellow one for allergies. Is that supposed to mean I want a guy to suck my dick?”

I shook my head and stifled a laugh. I wasn’t about to tell him if he showed up at a gay bar with a yellow hanky he’d end up being the recipient of golden showers.

Duke beamed with arrogance. “I told him his idea was worthless.”

“Worthless and disgusting,” Donaldson added.

I stood tall and clasped my hands behind my back. “If Cooper is gay, there are different leads we can follow.”

Donaldson came around the desk and stopped just inches from my face. “There is no way in hell this hijacker was queer. No nelly would have the balls to pull this off.”

Donaldson seemed to realize how close he was to me and backed away saying, “Any homo would be too worried about his panties riding up his ass. He wouldn’t have asked for money—he would’ve asked for boys to sodomize.”

“Sir, please—”

“No, I won’t even consider the thought. Cooper was a real man, a smart man. Not some disgusting pansy. Homosexuals simply aren’t intelligent enough to pull this off.” He glanced at Duke.

“I tried to tell him,” Duke said.

I shot him an icy glare, and Duke just smirked in return.

“I don’t think Pomeroy is ready for such a big case,” Duke said. “Maybe his time in organized crime messed him up.”

Backstabber! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “I’m sorry, sir,” I said. “I’ll drop this angle and focus on other aspects of the case.”

Donaldson paced and shook his head. “No, I think Duke is right. I expected too much from you. Besides, it’s good to learn other aspects of the Bureau.”

I started to argue but Donaldson raised a hand to stop me.

“I’m going to move you to the Evidence Department. Agent Nelson has been asking for help.”
