“He retreated to the edge of the club and sat down in the corner. A couple of black guys were already dancing, well overdancing. He was shy. Well, shy without alcohol. Although he secretly loved dancing. He was a bad dancer, a weird dancer really. Like Dad dancing, the kind that would embarrass a daughter if she was with her friends.

But that was his trick. It was what worked here. In fact he did love it here. As weird and peculiar as it was, it was very liberating to be away from the Home Counties where he’d grown up. To be away from the village. To be away from King Augustus’ boarding school. Here “gay” wasn’t a dirty word. People wouldn’t use the word “gay” to describe something bad.

Homosexuality was desired. Worshippable. Loved. Encouraged. Coaxed out of its shell. You wouldn’t need to hide away, and keep it a secret. It was a free thing here. You could indulge in your desire for handsome boys, shamelessly. You could dance with everyone. You could probably take any of these boys home. You could take them, like plucking apples from a tree. You could bite into them. You could love them for a night. Maybe more.

They were all hungry to be wanted and loved. Hungry to be needed. Hungry for the attention of a bigger man. Hungry to yield. All these young men were flexible, malleable, colourful. “

About Alex

Alexander Clifford is a young British author. He is very perceptive and curious and has always been fascinated by practical psychology and what makes people tick. His biggest influences are Stefan Zweig and Colin Wilson – whose writing asks the big questions. Who am I? How can I fit into the world despite being an outsider? What is it like to really be human? His curiosity led him to working various jobs in marketing, as a copywriter, journalist, salesperson, estate agent and masseur. He’s also traveled the world to the Caribbean, America and many European countries. All of this observation and curiosity has given Alexander a wealth of material to write books that he hopes resonates with you.
