Merry Christmas. Mr Miggles

by

Eli Easton

Toby Kincaid loves being the junior librarian in his hometown of Sandy Lake, Ohio. He spends his days surrounded by books and chatting with the library patrons. He especially adores the head librarian, Mr. Miggles, who is kind, witty, knowledgeable about everything, and hopelessly addicted to Christmas. Sean Miggles is also pretty cute, especially for an older guy who wears ties and suit pants every day.

But Sean keeps himself at a distance, and there’s a sadness about him that Toby can’t figure out. When Sean is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, he gives up without a fight. Toby realizes that he alone can save the library, and their head librarian.

Toby will need to uncover the darkness in Sean’s past and prove to him that he deserves a second chance at life and at love too. And while Christmas miracles are being handed out, maybe Toby will get his own dearest wish, to love and be loved by Mr. Miggles.

Exclusive Excerpt

I was nervous when I knocked on the door of his little lake cabin Saturday night after work. He hadn’t said much on the phone, and that was worrying. Had he heard through the grapevine that I was interfering? Was he going to tell me to knock it off?

Or was he going to sweep me into his arms and tell me he’d been unable to stop thinking about our kiss? Would he tell me that he would die a thousand painful deaths if he couldn’t have me stretched out on his bed, naked, and very soon? I’d vote for the latter.

But when Sean opened the door, he didn’t look tortured—fortunately, or love sick—unfortunately. In fact, he looked much better than the last time I’d seen him. He was freshly showered and shaved, and he wore a red sweater and jeans. I glanced behind me, wondering if I’d caught him on his way out.

“Toby. Come on in.” He gave me a smile that was only a little bit sad.

I’d take that. I stepped inside. He took my coat and hung it on a coat-tree near the door. “Would you like a drink? I made some glühwein. Old German recipe.”

“Sure. Sounds interesting.”

The air in the house was thick with spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, something warm and plummy. If Sean was feeling up to doing something Christmassy, that was a positive sign. And if he’d made the brew especially for me, that was an even better sign. Had he dressed nicely for me too?

My heart decided he must have dressed for me, and it began to beat overtime.

I felt tongue-tied as we went into the kitchen. He got down a couple of mugs from the cupboard and poured some fragrant wine from the pot into each one. I wasn’t sure why he’d asked me over, even if the hot wine did seem a little date-ish. I didn’t want to presume and look like an idiot. So I sipped my wine and watched him. The hot liquid was potent and warmed me all the way down. Not that it would take much at the moment.

He stood sipping from his own mug, leaning against the sink, his eyes avoiding mine.

“So….” I prompted. Patience has never been one of my virtues.

“Yes. Thank you for coming, Toby. I wanted to talk to you. I’ve given a lot of thought to what you said the other night.”

“Oh yeah?” I blinked my eyes innocently. Li’l old me?

“Yes.” He sighed, his face determined. “You’re right. I shouldn’t be a coward. That’s not fair to you or to the library patrons. Someone needs to stand up for the library.”

I nodded emphatically. “I totally agree.”

He nodded once. “Good. I’m sorry I haven’t been… helpful. This entire business became personal in a way that was…. Let’s just say it cut the legs out from under me for a time.”

“I understand.”

“Do you?” He blinked at me, frowning, as if he was trying to read me. Maybe he thought that I’d be repulsed by the accident once I’d had time and space to think about it.

Sean,” I said firmly. “Nothing that’s happened has changed my high opinion of you one iota.”

He blushed—blushed!—and looked away. “Thank you, Toby. That’s um… that means more to me than you could possibly know.” He cleared his throat. “Anyway, Monday evening is the board meeting. They’ll be voting on the issues affecting the library, my position included. I’m going to attend and do my best to stand up for myself, as you put it. And, of course, for the library in general. I don’t know that it’ll do any good. But I wanted you to know—I will try. Whitman says, keep your face always toward the sunshine—and shadows will fall behind you. Thank you for reminding me of that, for… for being my light.”

Oh my God, this man. I blinked hard to keep from making a fool of myself. “You’re welcome.”

I knew it wouldn’t be easy for him, standing there at the board meeting to face those accusations in person. But I was glad to see the Mr. Miggles I knew was back. He wasn’t a quitter.

“I’m going too, by the way. To the board meeting.”

Sean looked bewildered. “You are? You don’t have to do that, Toby.”

“No. But I want to. I already knew about it, and I planned to go.”

He studied my face and then nodded. “All right. I’d be grateful to have a little support there. Thank you.”

I bit my tongue to hold back a smile. He had no idea.

We leaned back against our respective counters and sipped at the hot mulled wine. It was good and a little sticky. I licked my lips. Sean’s gaze flickered to my mouth, then back up to my eyes. I could see uncertainty in his face. I liked to imagine he was warring with himself—that he wanted me too, but was too much of a gentleman to reach out. I stared at him, allowing my eyes to show everything I felt. We were so close. Kitchen. His house. Alone. All I could think about was the last time I’d seen him…. That kiss. I wanted to kiss him again. I’d gladly trade a few months of my life for the privilege.

He broke our mutual stare and looked up at the ceiling, his eyes wide. “Toby…. About, um… the other night….”

“The bit where I kissed you, and you said you didn’t deserve me?” I suggested.

“That would be the bit,” he said a little shakily. “I think—”

I put my mug on the counter with a loud bang and took a step toward him. “Look, Sean,” I said boldly. “We’re both grown men. Grown gay men. This isn’t a lifetime commitment. We can just make each other happy for an hour or so. Right?”

He blinked in surprise. A crease of a frown appeared on his brow. “I don’t think it’s quite that simple. If we—”

I took another step forward, crowding him. He had nowhere to go since he was already leaning against the sink. “After all, you’re not my boss at the moment, and I’m not your employee. It doesn’t have to mean anything. Or it might. We don’t have to decide that right now, do we?”

Good argument, I commended myself. I stared at his mouth and let my lips part slightly.

There was a tiny sound in the back of Sean’s throat. He looked down at me, eyes full of doubt but also desire. He didn’t move away. “It will mean something. To me at least. Surely you know that.”

“Okay. I don’t have a problem with it meaning something.” I was more or less babbling. I didn’t have a lot of blood left for brain work. I let my weight lean against him, felt the firm pressure of his body under mine. His thighs. God, the man had sexy thighs. That bulky damn sweater. Even with all that… yarn between us, the press of him was solid and muscled, and it made my blood pump like it was at a four-alarm fire. I stared at his mouth. I wanted him. So much. And I wanted him to see just how much I wanted him.

I felt his palms settle on my hips. He didn’t push me away. “You’re trying to seduce me, you Lothario,” he murmured. “You’re not playing fair. There’s no way I can resist you.”

I smiled at that. “Then don’t.”

There was nothing hesitant about the kiss this time. I started it, but he devoured my mouth, nothing held back. I sucked on his tongue like it was made of cocaine, chocolate, and orgasms. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me as close as he could. I loved the feel of his arms—strong, confident, secure, like he could take care of the entire freaking world. It felt like I’d been waiting for those arms my whole life.

But it wasn’t enough. I wanted more, preferably everything, preferably now. I pushed into him, needing to feel as much of him against me as possible. He was hard, a firm line of arousal against my stomach. My knees went weak at the solid proof that he wanted me too. Sean Miggles wanted me.

I broke the kiss, panting. “Oh God, I’m going to faint.”

“Me too. How can I… Toby. You’re so…. Let’s just….”

He pulled me out of the kitchen, to the bedroom presumably, or at least some place horizontal. We went down a dark hallway, still kissing. He fumbled with a doorknob. There was a bed. Oh look, a bed! The room was cold, which was great because I was about to burst into flames. We fell onto the mattress.
