Wayward Son

(Sons 02)

Shae Connor

After his move to Atlanta and away from the influence of his conservative parents, Mikey O’Malley finally feels free to be himself: art student, aspiring animator, and out gay man. He has friends, a new job, and not one, but two men interested in him. Cory Lassiter and Jimmy Black have been a happy couple for years, occasionally bringing a twink into their bed, but only for a brief roll in the hay. When Mikey meets the pair, the attraction is immediate, and it runs three ways. Mikey just can’t believe they’d have room in their lives for a permanent addition.

When Mikey’s newfound life is shattered by a lawsuit that accuses him of molesting a child years earlier, he’s determined to face his troubles on his own, but Cory and Jimmy are just as determined that he not have to go it alone. To reconcile his need for independence and his desire for love, Mikey has to learn that being a man isn’t just about standing on your own two feet. It’s about letting yourself lean on the ones who love you.

When Three Men Are Better Than Two

by Shae Connor

Writing a ménage is a delicate balance. It’s difficult enough to navigate the troubled waters of romance when just two people are involved. Add in a third, and everything can easily be thrown off kilter.

But when the pieces all fit together right? A ménage can be one of the best things ever for a reader who loves them. Like, say, me.

I don’t know what it is about a threesome that appeals to me so much. I mean, a sex scene involving multiples can be extra hot, but a true polyamorous relationship is about way more than just that. Sure, everyone involved gets extra support, from two (or more) people instead of just one, and there’s an extra body when you’re dividing up the chores. But the participants in any ménage (or more), whether a one-time thing or a lifetime commitment, interact in intricate ways that can, for some people, tie them together closer than any one-on-one pairing ever could.

When I was writing Unfortunate Son, it became clear to me early on that Cory and Jimmy were going to demand a story of their own. They aren’t exactly shy, retiring types. As they told me more about themselves, though, it also became clear that it wasn’t going to be all that straightforward. Cory and Jimmy love each other very much, but a part of that is the way they enjoy sharing their bed with a third man. When Riley’s friend Mikey came into the picture, he fell perfectly into the empty space in Cory and Jimmy’s life. Okay, maybe not perfectly, at first, but he was clearly what they needed. He just had to figure that out.

After writing Wayward Son, I have even more respect for authors who write multiple-partner stories well. I’ve read a lot of them over the past few years, and some work well while others just don’t. I’m going to share a few of my ménage favorites here, but rest assured, there are many more I could have included.

Wayward Son is dedicated to Heidi because her book was one of the first M/M/M books I read. Yes, the story ends up with just Sam and Mitch as a couple, but Randy’s involvement is an integral part of their relationship development. It’s wickedly dirty and wonderfully sweet, which are two of my very favorite things.

What We Deserve by Kerry Freeman

Four years ago, I donated a manuscript critique to a fund-raiser for relief efforts after a tornado outbreak in Alabama. Kerry won, and I got the pleasure of being one of the first to read this story. I think I got the better end of the deal.

By Any Other Name by Tia Fielding

A story of what happens to an established couple when a first love re-enters the picture—and they both fall for him.

Dark Horse series by Kate Sherwood

https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/index.php?cPath=311

Many menage stories start with the premise of an established couple bringing in a third, but this series takes a slightly different approach. Yes, Evan and Jeff are lovers, but they aren’t that serious about it until adding Dan into the mix brings them together.

Out of Focus by L.A. Witt

Another case of an established couple bringing in a third, this book tells the story of two alpha-top photographers and the submissive who captures their eyes—and then their hearts. BDSM yumminess.

911 by Chris Owen

A classic of the genre, this book is really two stories: an M/M romance, and then an M/M/M as a third enters the picture. Featuring men in uniform (doctor, firefighter, and EMT), which just makes things that much better.

Falls Chance Ranch by Rolf and Ranger

http://fallschanceranch.blogspot.com/

This still-ongoing free online series focuses on a domestic discipline relationship between four men that expands to include a fifth. And, since it centers around a ranch, you get the bonus of cowboy types too. Never a bad thing in my book!

Review: This is the sequel to the book Unfortunate Son. I recall at the end of Unfortunate Son wanting to know about Mikey, Cory (Coco Lame) and Jimmy. I wanted to know what was going on with these guys and if they would actually get a HEA. And here is the book to find out, which is really a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying sequel.

This is a large deviation from the first book. While Unfortunate Son featured porn rather heavily, it is barely mentioned here. In fact, it is only mentioned once when Jimmy explains he did porn for a bit to pay the bills. Of course, we get a quick look in on a few of the other characters of Unfortunate Son, which all fits together seamlessly. Cory and Jimmy are fairly much an established couple, although I would have loved more of an appearance from Cory’s drag persona Coco Lame. They also been known to play around with a third man and this is where Mikey comes in.

Mikey is the unknown variable really and so we are follow his story. Mikey has snared the attention and the affections of the Cory and Jimmy. With the intrusion of Mikey’s past and serious legal allegations, the question is will Cory and Jimmy step up to the plate? The Wayward part of the title comes in when Mikey’s past and present collide. All three men are such lovable characters and I was cheering for them individually and together for the entire book.

However, this is really and truly Mikey’s book. There is no story line involving Cory or Jimmy when they aren’t worrying about Mikey’s current predicament. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, since I really enjoyed the pace and direction of this instalment. In saying that though, because it is Mikey’s story, it would have been nice to explore Mikey’s relationship with his parents, because while his mother was annoying his father seemed pleasant enough.
