Where We Belong

(States of Love 09: Colorado)
by

Tia Fielding

It all starts at a concert at the Red Rock Amphitheater in 2004. Blake just finished high school, Dusty is a college sophomore, and as soon as they meet, they know—they belong together. With Blake living in Nebraska and Dusty in Colorado, distance does its best to keep them apart.

For two years, it succeeds.

Then Blake flees his bigoted—and even dangerous—hometown.

Two years later, Blake and Dusty are getting their lives off the ground, with Blake trying to grow his computer repair business and Dusty working with kindergarteners. Dusty thinks there’s room in their hearts and their lives for their family to grow… he just has to figure out how to express that to Blake.

Release date: 30th November 2016
Pre-order: Dreamspinner Press

Tia Fielding

Hiya all, I’m Tia Fielding, and I’m basically here because look at the pretty cover! The ever so wonderful Garrett Leigh made random images I’d had in my head into something so fitting to the story I couldn’t help but to be in awe. Full disclosure, though, there wasn’t a camera in the story until I saw the first versions of the cover. But it fit the story so well, I had to give Dusty a camera….

This story, Where We Belong, is part of Dreamspinner Press’ States of Love collection, and it’s set in Colorado. The story came to me a bit weirdly, because it wanted to be told in two year cycles. I tried to change it into something more traditional, trust me on this, but in the end I made it work (by some miracle…)

I really like this little story and the characters, and I hope you enjoy reading about Dusty and Blake’s journey as much as I did writing it!

Excerpt

Blake sat in the armchair in the corner of his daughter’s small bedroom and smiled at her sleeping form. A lot had changed since the hike when Dusty had blurted out he wanted a baby.

They’d gotten to actually doing something about it some three months later, and by some miracle—which none of them took for granted—the turkey baster method had worked like a charm, and Holly had become pregnant on the first try.

Now it was the morning of Molly’s first birthday, and Blake had woken up before anyone else, just to savor the moment. He’d grown up fast, he thought. Had he ever really envisioned having a one-year-old at twenty-four? No. But then again, he’d never thought about having kids at all before he met Dusty, and frankly he’d never thought he’d find someone as awesome as Dusty either.

He hadn’t counted on meeting someone wonderful, falling in love, and meeting their best friend, who would later have the baby all three of them doted on from the beginning. But there he was, looking at the sleeping baby in her crib, trying not to cry as the feelings overwhelmed him.

He’d considered himself tough, but like Dusty said, “along came Molly” and things changed.

For one, they’d started to make long-term plans. Dusty had studied some more while keeping his job at the school, just in case. Blake, on the other hand, had worked his ass off to get his business off the ground. They’d done all this while supporting Holly while she went through the pregnancy.

They’d all—even Holly, because she said it would be her contribution to give the baby a stable home, after all she’d be more absent than not after it was born—put money into a deposit for a house more suitable for a family.

After a couple of months of looking and pondering on their options, they’d lucked out big-time. They’d found a house in a family-friendly neighborhood with a short commute to Dusty’s job in Greeley. In fact, he could cycle to work if the weather was nice; it was that close to the school.

Three bedrooms and a large, fenced backyard. Yeah, it was awesome. Sure, it wasn’t a new house, but it was in a good condition, and they couldn’t have hoped for a better property within their price range. “Morning,” Dusty whispered from the doorway, looking sleep-mussed and adorable.

“Morning,” Blake answered, holding out his hand to pull Dusty onto his lap for a moment.

“She’s so adorable when she’s asleep,” Dusty said quietly, making Blake chuckle.

“Yeah, that she is.”

They’d gone through some colic issues early on, and if Holly hadn’t had the first few months to spare, Blake didn’t know how they would’ve managed. His mom had come over from Nebraska for a few weeks, and Dusty’s folks helped where they could.

It had been rough, but somehow they were with a happy, healthy baby girl who was about to turn one.

“I still can’t believe we named her Molly,” Blake whispered, and this time it was Dusty who laughed quietly.

While pregnant, Holly had had to spend the last two months mostly on bed rest, and she’d read the entire Harry Potter series. When the baby had been born and, as Holly put it, “her genitalia suggests she’s a girl, but we’ll see,” she’d insisted on Molly. They’d managed to drop Anna from the front, but apparently, in the books, one of the moms was “the baddest bitch alive” or something, and yeah.

“Our daughter is a pop culture reference,” Blake stated, but he thought— like he had before—that it was nice for Molly to have a similar name to her mom’s, whether Holly would actually be part of her daily life or not.

About Tia

Tia Fielding is a thirtysomething Scandinavian who is a lover of witty people, words, cats, sarcasm, autumn, and the tiny beautiful things in life. Tia struggles with stubborn muses and depression, but both are things she has learned to live with.

After losing the thread of her writing in her teens, Tia rediscovered the joy of writing stories through fan fiction, which later kick-started her publishing career. Tia is not ashamed of her past of borrowing other people’s characters, but has found creating her own much more satisfying.

Tia identifies as genderqueer, but isn’t strict about pronouns. Why? Because luckily, in her native language there aren’t gender-specific pronouns. Being a reclusive author living with her fur-babies is another fact of life for Tia, among the need to write that seems to be a part of her psyche by now.

In the fall of 2014, Tia took a huge leap for most authors and kicked her coffee habit. Do not fret, though, she switched to tea, so her life isn’t completely lacking caffeine.

In 2013 Tia’s one of Tia’s novels was recognized by the industry’s Rainbow Awards in the Best LGBT Erotic Romance (Bobby Michaels Award) category.
