Bedside Manner

(Hearts and Health 01)

Dr. Paul Johnston can’t get a set of dark, somber eyes out of his head, and the timing couldn’t be worse.

The last thing he needs is to fall for a patient. Not now, when he’s been put on paid leave pending review of a formal complaint. One that most likely accuses him of sexual harrassment or impropriety of some kind. It’s possible he let his newfound freedom as a divorced, out-of-the-closet gay man go to his head, but he’s certain — mostly — he didn’t do anything wrong. Now, he’s struggling to handle the reality that his job is in danger and the only guy he wants should be off-limits.

Zane Kavanaugh is floundering, and there’s only one man who soothes the storm inside him.

Reeling from an assault that landed him in the hospital and the painful estrangement from his family since coming out, Zane is trying to get his feet under him and find his independence. He moves in with a roommate and searches for a job, all while recovering from a fractured arm and cracked ribs. None of that hurts as much as the emotional damage he’s suffered. When he connects with Dr. Paul Johnston outside of the ER, he’s drawn to the man’s calm, collected manner. It doesn’t hurt that Paul’s lack of experience with men is sexy as hell, and so are his over-the-top responses when Zane gets his lips on him.

There’s no right time to fall in love.

Paul is afraid to start a relationship, and Zane can only handle so much more rejection. Will these two find their perfect moment, or will they realize you can’t choose when and how you fall in love? If Paul can’t take a risk, he may have to choose: the career he loves or the first man to capture his heart.

Bedside Manner is Book 1 of the Hearts & Health series. This is a spin-off series from the book Heart Trouble and includes characters from that novel, but it can be read as a standalone.

Zane should have found Paul too gangly or too academic, but something about the way all his angles came together was appealing. Paul Johnston was easy on the eye, with perfectly balanced features and skin so smooth Zane occasionally wondered if he even had to shave.

Zane raised his eyebrows. “Come on, Doc. You’re hot in that sexy doctor way.”

“What does that even mean?” Paul said, brow wrinkling in confusion. “There’s plenty of ugly doctors. I’ve seen them.”

Zane chuckled. “I just mean you look like a sexy, smart guy. Come on, your wife must have told you all this, or other women you’ve dated.”

Paul shrugged, looking embarrassed. “Meredith wanted the doctor, too, I suppose. I was kind of a trophy husband for her.”

Zane shook his head. “No wonder you don’t like being called a hot doctor. You’re more than your profession, Paul.”

Paul didn’t look convinced, and even though he’d just been rejected, Zane couldn’t resist leaning forward and pushing a hand through Paul’s hair.

“I love this gold hair of yours. It’s not that peroxide shit that people get from bleaching and it’s not that boring sandy color Gage has. It’s really gold, and when you’re in the sun, there are all these little highlights that glint in the light.”

“Um.”

Zane moved his hand to Paul’s face, cupping his jaw. “I like the shape of your face and the way you look in these glasses. Smart and hot at the same time.”

Paul’s lips quirked in amusement.

“And those lips.” Zane moved a thumb to caress Paul’s mouth, and the man sucked in a sharp breath. “They’re the perfect shade of pink and so fun to kiss. It’s a bummer you’re telling me I can’t kiss you anymore.”

Blurb: Dr. Paul Johnston can’t get a set of dark, somber eyes out of his head, and the timing couldn’t be worse.

Note: This is a spin-off series. While it can stand alone, you may want to read Heart Trouble (Ashe Sentinel Connections), where the characters first appeared in secondary roles.

Review: Doctor Paul Johnston becomes a little infatuated with a patient who was severely beaten by his stepfather, there’s something about the strength that Paul spots in the younger man’s eyes that draws him to Zane. But just as Paul thinks about making a move trouble lands in his lap when someone makes a complaint and he’s put on paid leave.

Zane’s life fell to pieces when he came out to his dad, and it shattered when he came out to his mom and her husband reacted badly, recovering from a severe beating while moving into a friend’s apartment isn’t ideal but when the doctor who treated him makes an appearance Zane perks up but with Paul being newly out of the closet and his work problems it doesn’t look good when Zane sets his heart on him.

This is a great new series that connects slightly to the Ashe Sentinel Connections series and it does say it can be read as a standalone but I’d recommend reading at least Heart Trouble first as they are directly connected.

Paul is fresh out of a marriage and the closet so he’s completely hopeless with his flirting and approaching a man for a date, it’s led to some awkward moments and Paul just hasn’t a clue. Zane has been hurt by the ones who were supposed to love him unconditionally, but his dad hurt him the worst when he gave Zane an ultimatum. With the help of his friends, including his college teacher Gage and Gage’s boyfriend Ben, Zane begins to rebuild his life without his parents.

Paul and Zane’s relationship is a May – September relationship, Paul is eighteen years older than Zane but Zane is much more worldly in living as a gay man, their relationship has a lot of fits and starts before they get to a place that suits them both. Neither man has it easy as they try to set their lives back in order.

This story is an easy read with just a touch of tension, we get to see a bit of Ben and Gage from Heart Trouble and it was nice to see their relationship growing in leaps and bounds. I’ll admit to taking Paul to my heart because he was vilified in Heart Trouble but he was just severely misunderstood, and being honest I’d have sued the nurse Alex for defamation after all the trouble she cause Paul, she seriously pissed me off and I grinned as Paul made a very succulent point to her.

I recommend this story to those who love contemporaries where troubles are faced head on, where relationships bloom after some difficulties and a happy ending where parental relationships are tentatively repaired.
