Coming Clean

by

Silvia Violet

An unexpected inheritance lands Jeremy a large house and plenty of money to take a sabbatical from his job teaching poetry at a small college. He intends to sell the house and take off on a new path to discover what he wants out of life. Then he meets Connor. The attraction he feels to a man so different from himself is no less shocking than his change in financial circumstances, but Connor is in the closet and Jeremy wants a life lived out in the sun.

Connor is a former Force Recon Marine who runs a housecleaning business. When he’s hired to get Jeremy’s house market-ready, he’s startled by how attracted he is to his client despite their many differences. But his past, especially his final mission, weighs heavily on him. He’s not certain he can be the man Jeremy needs, but no man has ever made him want to take a risk like Jeremy does.

Excerpt

Connor needed to forget about him. Why did he find the man so fucking attractive anyway? He’d been tongue-tied and maybe a little crazy—were all professors a little crazy? And those socks, those damn neon socks, were hideous.

But you said they were cute.

I was just being polite.

Sure you were.

They were absolutely not sexy. I do not have a neon sock fetish.

Sounds more like you’ve got a nerdy poetry professor fetish.

No. I. Do. Not.

He could feel his conscience laughing at him. Fuck!

Connor pushed himself off the couch. Maybe he needed to get laid. He was going out, and he was going to find someone to fuck, someone who was nothing like the beautiful professor he could never have.

About Silvia

Silvia Violet writes erotic romance in a variety of genres including paranormal, contemporary, sci fi, and historical. She can be found haunting coffee shops looking for the darkest, strongest cup of coffee she can find. Once equipped with the needed fuel, she can happily sit for hours pounding away at her laptop. Silvia typically leaves home disguised as a suburban stay-at-home-mom, and other coffee shop patrons tend to ask her hilarious questions like “Do you write children’s books?” She loves watching the looks on their faces when they learn what she’s actually up to. When not writing, Silvia enjoys baking sinfully delicious treats, exploring new styles of cooking, and reading to her incorrigible offspring. Come visit me at my website: http://silviaviolet.com

Review: This isn’t your run of the mill ex-marine romance, nor is it your usual nerdy professor type getting some love. Instead this is a sweet story, even if it sometimes rather slow-paced. However, the slow pace can be forgiven when you see/read just how much the characters need to get through so that she can possibly even get a something resembling a HEA.

Jeremy is the professor who has inherited a small fortune. Through this he meets Connor, an ex-marine who unexpectedly runs and works for his own house cleaning service. These are both great characters and it’s easy to feel their trepidation and uncertainty. I particularly like Jeremy, perhaps because characters like him hit too close to home. I really enjoyed that despite being a university academic he isn’t strictly a bumbling, anti-social, cranky guy who is too obsessed with his work to even care about the people around him or more than his close circle (although thinking about it that does sound like me, lol). Connor is also different that what you expect for ex-marine characters. He is extremely sweet, soft-spoken introverted and careful in all that he does. The contrast between these two guys is great.

The story essentially revolves around two broad questions. One, what will Jeremy do with his career next and where will it take him? And two, how long will Connor live in the closet, worried about what his best friend would think?

As I said earlier, the story does tend to drag in places but I found I was saved from absolute boredom by the very different characters. Aside from Jeremy and Connor, there was also David and Sabrina, their respective friends. David especially put a lot of colour onto the page when he made an appearance.

I couldn’t decide between rating this one 3.5 or 4. In the end the higher rating won out because this was an enjoyable book. With one character closeted it certainly had the potential to be frustrating and Connor could have been difficult to like, but in the end I found I liked how Connor’s issues were dealt with.
