Coral Moore - Deep Water (DD)

Interview with Coral Moore

Pixie: Hello to Coral Moore who is joining us today for the Dreamspinner Press Daily Dose with their release Deep Water, hey Coral *waves*

Coral: Hi, Pixie! *waves back* Thanks for inviting me.

Pixie: Coral your contribution to the Daily Dose is Deep Water why don’t you tell our readers a little about it.

Coral: Deep Water is a story about a swimmer and a poet. *grin* I guess you want a little more than that? Well, they meet, and they have a bit of a miscommunication and a couple of false starts, but eventually they decide they don’t hate each other. Just when they get it together, Mario is attacked by some guys that mistake him for Jordan. That creates more issues between them when Mario thinks he’ll lose his scholarship and his only chance to go to college.

Pixie: So did you have Deep Water in mind before the Daily Dose submission call or did it come into being after you saw the call for hurt/comfort stories?

Coral: It was a story I had already written a few months before seeing the submission call, but when I read it I thought that Deep Water was well-suited for the anthology because it covered the theme of being hurt and healing, literally and figuratively.

Pixie: Did you enjoy writing a hurt/comfort story or did you find it hard to write?

Coral: I loved writing Deep Water. It came very easily for me. The characters are fun and it’s the most sweetly romantic story I’ve ever written. I also love writing angst and there’s plenty of that in this story too!

Pixie: So Coral you have a couple of stories to your name but I do believe that this is the first with a publisher, how’d it feel to get that email saying you were in the Mended Daily Dose?

Coral: I was so thrilled! I had submitted half a dozen stories at that point I think, and this was my first one to Dreamspinner. It took me completely by surprise. So much so that at first I thought the email was rejection. I scanned the first line and I misread something. I was so busy thinking to myself “Oh well where should I send it now?” that when I got to the bottom and they said I should reply if I accepted I couldn’t figure out what they were talking about. It was funny.

Pixie: Do you think you will revisit Mario and Jordan in the future?

Coral: I’m not sure. I do love the characters but I’m not sure I have more story to tell regarding them. I’ll have to wait until I get an idea.

Pixie: What can we expect from you next?

Coral: More stories, of course! I have a few other short stories making the rounds that I hope someone will pick up. I’m also sending a novel around to some agents. It’s an exciting time for me and I hope to have more news to share very soon.

Pixie: Now why don’t you let the readers know where to find you.

Coral: My website is the place where my writing updates go: http://www.coralmoore.com/ Twitter is the best place to stop by and just say hello: https://twitter.com/coralm My Facebook page is somewhere between the two: https://www.facebook.com/AuthorCoralMoore

Pixie: Before we go is there anything you’d like to tell the readers and fans?

Coral: Thank you for reading and being interested in Deep Water! If you like my writing and you’re a werewolf fan, I have a self-published series of Paranormal Romance books called Broods of Fenrir (http://www.broodsoffenrir.com/). The love story of the first book is MF, but the second book in the series features an MM couple as the main characters.

Pixie: Coral thank you so much for joining us today, good luck with Deep Water.

Coral:  Thanks, Pixie!

About Coral

Coral Moore has always been the kind of girl who makes up stories. Fortunately, she never quite grew out of that. She writes because she loves to invent characters and the desire to find out what happens to her creations drives her tales.

Prompted by a general interest in how life works, she studied biology. She enjoys conversations about genetics and microbiology as much as those about vampires and werewolves. Coral writes mainly speculative fiction and has a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Albertus Magnus College. She is a 2013 alum of the Viable Paradise writer’s workshop.

Currently she lives in Connecticut with the love of her life, who offers both encouragement and kicks in the tail when necessary. Also in residence are two mammals of the families Canidae and Felidae. List of places you can find her on the web:

Blurb: Mario Guzman is trying out for the swim team, his ticket to paying his way through college. When he meets Jordan Lewis, an outspoken writer for the school’s paper, he considers coming out even though he’s been very private about his sexuality all his life.

Violence intended for Jordan takes Mario out of consideration for the team and threatens his best hope for an education. He lashes out when Jordan tries to help him in his time of need. Eventually Mario regrets driving Jordan away, and his need to apologize takes him to the scene of the attack, where he confronts his pain and terror. This time Jordan is there to help him face the biggest obstacle in his path.

Review: Mario faced his fear of water with the help of his best friend Gladys and now he is trying out for the swim team. Meeting Jordan has him considering coming out but after a first date he is viciously attacked and Mario pushes Jordan away. Jordan is surprised when the hot swimmer makes his interest known and when Mario is mistakenly attacked Jordan refuses to let Mario push him away. Can Mario get past his fear and will he allow Jordan to give him the support he needs?

This is a lovely little story of facing fears and finding love. Mario faced his biggest fear when he was younger, now he loves the water and is hoping to get on the swim team to help pay his college fees. Jordan writes for the newspaper, he writes about important LGBT issues as well as the usual college issues. Mario isn’t quite in the closet but neither is he fully out, Jordan is fully out and has no intention of ever hiding it. When they first meet neither is sure of the other but they quickly warm up and express their interest in each other.

I really liked this story and the way that Mario and Jordan first got together, it was nice to see the flare of attraction between them. It wasn’t going to be easy for the guys though and we see that early on with Mario not really being open with his sexuality and Jordan being very out, but they have even more going against them when Mario is attacked and he sees all his dreams crumbling before him. Jordan is incredible though and refuses to allow Mario to lose hope; he is also there to support Mario when Mario faces his new fear head on.

I recommend this to those who love facing fears and supportive friends, starting relationships in turbulent times and a sweet ending for two sweet men.
