Duck Duck Ghost

(Hellsinger 02)

by

Rhys Ford

Paranormal investigator Wolf Kincaid knows what his foot tastes like.

Mostly because he stuck it firmly in his mouth when his lover, Tristan Pryce, accidentally drugged him with a batch of psychotropic baklava. Needing to patch things up between them, Wolf drags Tristan to San Luis Obispo, hoping Tristan’s medium ability can help evict a troublesome spirit haunting an old farmhouse.

With Wolf’s sister handling Hoxne Grange’s spectral visitors, Tristan finds himself in the unique position of being able to leave home for the first time in forever, but Wolf’s roughshod treatment is the least of his worries. Tristan’s ad-hoc portal for passing spirits seems to be getting fewer and fewer guests, and despite his concern he’s broken his home, Tristan agrees to help Wolf’s cousin, Sey, kick her poltergeist to the proverbial curb.

San Luis Obispo brings its own bushel of troubles. Tristan’s ghost whispering skill is challenged not only by a terrorizing haunting but also by Wolf’s skeptical older cousin, Cin. Bookended by a pair of aggressive Kincaids, Tristan soon finds himself in a spectral battle that threatens not only his sanity but also his relationship with Wolf, the first man he’s ever loved.

PART NINE

Tristan was dead tired.

Poor choice of thoughts, he realized as he glanced towards Wolf. The man was busy blocking up the broken window with duct tape and cardboard. A glazier would be by later in the afternoon to fix the pane but—Tristan started, realizing it was already past noon and none of them had slept or eaten since… he couldn’t remember when.

“I got a hold of Andrea.” He skirted the bed, its covers stripped off and taken in with the police for testing. His sweats and shirt disappeared alongside the linens but the detective had been understanding when he’d confessed to sitting down on the bed while Wolf tried to revive Hazel. “She’s at the airport on standby. The airline said they can probably get her on the next flight.”

“Still a long ass haul.” Wolf tore off another piece of tape and cornered it across the cardboard he’d cut out. “Glass guy called. He said he can’t get out here until tomorrow. Told him it would be fine since we’re not going anywhere. Gidge and Matt are going to stop for food on the way back from the hospital. I told them to grab something from the Vietnamese place on 4th. You like that meat and cold noodle dish, right? The one with the egg rolls?”

Bún thịt nướng? Yeah.” Tristan knew he was hovering but he couldn’t help it. Pacing down the room’s length, he stopped at the fireplace and stared at the photos arranged on the mantel. A snapshot of a younger Hazel and Deirdre had a prominent place, framed out in a thick black wood rectangle. “Did they say Hazel was doing okay?”

“Yeah, doctors think whatever it is, she didn’t ingest enough of it to do any permanent damage. Cops took everything in the bathroom and the tea canister from the kitchen. Screen too. Kinda interesting watching them cast the footprints. Got a good talk in with that detective. ‘Course she had as many questions for me as I did for her. She was interested in the screeching we heard before Hazel got sick. Don’t be surprised if they start hunting through the air ducts tomorrow looking for speakers.”

“So that’s what you think the screeching was… a speaker in the air ducts?”

“Think so. Someone’s trying to fuck with Hazel. Babe, someone poisoned her. With something that would make her go crazy. That’s not a ghost story. That’s someone alive and well fucking with a woman who seems like a pretty nice person. Sorry, babe. Looks like there’s no boo-wiggly here.”

“Yeah, about that,” Tristan said softly, picking up the picture frame with Deidre and Hazel smiling broadly in a loose embrace at a windswept beach. “I met Hazel’s girlfriend.”

“Andrea?” Wolf cocked his head and glanced at Tristan. “When?”

“Not Andrea.” He shook his head and held the photo up for Wolf to look at. “Deidre. The Bocker in the Maplethorn-Bocker name. She’s here, Wolf. Problem is, I don’t think she knows she’s dead.”

Review: Let’s just say that I’m biased about ghost hunting paranormals….I’m a big fan of Supernatural, so I’m already bound to love this book. Add to that my favorite artgeeky, sexy yet odd Tristan Pryce.

From the previous book we’ve finally, or so I thought, gotten over Wolf’s skeptical and cynical side, Tristan sees ghosts, interacts with them, no question about that. But is it more about the house, or does Tristan’s gift go deeper? As Tristan ponders this, he also has to wonder if his relationship with Wolf goes deeper. Can he function outside of the grange, will their chemistry and their relationship find new energy too?

Only one way to find out, Ford forces us out of the grange and into new territory and for Tris and new family members to meet too!

Okay, the only thing creeper to me than clowns…creepy dolls! LOTS of creepy dolls, moving dolls, headless dolls, doll parts, and yes, rolling doll heads. If this book didn’t give me a nightmare about being buried and suffocated by creepy dolls, nothing will. Because not only does Tristan see ghosts, and interact with them, it seems poltergeists have a way with him too!

Besides the spooktacular paranormal activity, the other thing I enjoyed about this book is knowing that Tristan isn’t the only one with a “unique” family.

On the plus side, Wolf’s sister turns out to be great ally for Tris, and very helpful in that because of her talents, he is now able to leave the grange and not worry about seeing the ghosts to their next stay. Ophelia sees Hoxne’s ghostly residents, and makes Tristan feel more “normal.

On the flip side, the testosterone and skepticism that seemed to ooze from Wolf, overflows Cin’s personality and once again Tristan feels the need to prove himself. Even if it proves more dangerous to his own well being.

I don’t’ want to ruin the details of the creeptacular events, let’s just say Tristan rocks and the Kincaid boys got nothin’ on my favorite sexy little ghost whisperer.

Yeah, I forgot to mention the hot bits, Rhys never disappoints with the steamy content!

If you like sexual tension, uber creepy paranormal activity and enough bravado to beat with a stick, pick up Duck Duck Ghost! While you’re at it read Fish and Ghosts first!

  1. Oh there is no boo-wiggly says Wolf, but Tris has seen the ghost of Deirdre, hmm but there is still the mysterious ‘un-ghostly’ footprints…?

Another interesting snippet and review, although I am no looking forward to the ghostly dolls and doll parts, thank you and also thank you for a chance to win something on this tour.

  2. Well, I finished Duck Duck Ghost this afternoon and I LOVE it. The only thing is, is that this is release week and I’m ready for the next book.

I really am enjoying this story though. Thanks Rhys.

  3. I finished Duck Duck Ghost this afternoon, and I must say I LOVED it. The only thing is, is that this is release week and I’m ready for the next book.

I am really enjoying this story though. Thanks Rhys.

  4. I think I was wrong in my suspicions–hmmm. I am glad Hazel is okay though–or as okay as someone who is in the hospital recovering from a poisoning can be. It seems like it would be kinda weird having a picture of Hazel and Deidre in the bedroom–if you were Andrea.

  5. Having so much fun following this story each day. Thanks so much for giving this to us all!

  6. Loving this story and looking forward to reading more. I just started Duck Duck Ghost too!

  7. Currently reading Duck Duck Ghost. Forgot how much I love Mara. Glad to hear Cook is still showing up.

  8. Finished DDG. This tour just wets the appetite for the next adventure featuring Tristan and Wolf.

  9. This is great! I have to say though, in the terror department I can’t move past clowns 🙁

  10. Really curious to know who the live person is.
And wouldn’t it be frustrating to not know you’re dead?
