When six-year-old Matt Wilson and his Shih Tzu, Pixie, step out of the Stanton Community Hospital and disappear, his desperate parents convince Jaron Greenberg, a local pet psychic, to aid the police in the search. Jaron specializes in finding lost kitties and fixing problem pooches. He isn’t prepared for a case with so much at stake. And as soon as he starts, the abilities he’s had since childhood begin changing and growing in unexpected ways.

Paulo Silva is a veteran detective new to the small town of Stanton. As the low man on the totem pole at Stanton PD, he isn’t happy when the chief assigns him to babysit the pet psychic instead of actively working the missing child case. As Jaron uncovers clues, Paulo starts to wonder if he might be the real thing. Or maybe it’s just his testosterone reacting to what he’s sure is mutual attraction.

THE HYSTERICAL yapping of a dog could be heard through the thin walls separating the small office from the main business area. It must be bath time for the Pomeranian. Resisting the urge to sigh, Jaron Greenberg gave his prospective client what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “I’m sorry about the noise. Most dogs love getting the full spa treatment at Pampered Pooches, but a few are nervous about getting their paws wet.” A chorus of barks joined the Pomeranian in doggy solidarity.

The old woman’s eyes widened behind her thick glasses as Jaron’s Newfoundland poked his massive head up to see what the racket was all about. The dog’s thick black coat and calm demeanor meant more often than not he blended in as he sprawled half-underneath the desk on the black tiled floor.

“Don’t worry,” Jaron said, scratching Bear’s ears. “He’s a furry ball of mush.”

Mrs. Reynolds smiled politely but clutched her leather purse to her flower-covered bosom. It was hard to blame her. Bear really was a bear of a dog. A hundred and sixty pound teddy bear.

Review: Jaron is a pet psychic, he is just getting by helping find lost pets and fixing pets problems when he’s approached by desperate parents ask him to find their six-year old son’s Shih Tzu, Pixie, a Shih Tzu who went missing with their son. Paulo is the low detective on the totem pole at Stanton PD and he is assigned to babysit the pet psychic on a missing child case and he isn’t happy to be working with a flake, convinced Jaron is faking he tries to disprove Jaron’s abilities but ends up surprised. Jaron finds that his abilities are expanding the longer he works the case, but he can’t stop till he finds Pixie and even then he finds that something refuses to let him stop.

Oh now this was a great read, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Jaron has had psychic abilities since he was a child, it only works with animals and he has made it into a business where he just scrapes by. He is ignored or shunned by some townsfolk some because he is psychic, some because of his parents and others because he is gay but he has his best friends Stephen and his loyal Newfoundland Bear. Paulo feels terrible guilt over a case and left the State Police to join Stanton PD hoping to never come across the type of case that he nearly lost his mind over. He’s settled in but his newest case is driving him mad especially when his ex in the State Police is called in to help. Paulo and Jaron have an instant attraction but with Paulo thinking Jaron is a fake and Jaron knowing that Paulo thinks he is a fake it doesn’t look like the two men will ever act on their attraction.

I was pulled into this story from the very first paragraph, I couldn’t not read it after the opening scene, it disturbs but reassures as the same time and then we are thrown into Jaron’s sphere with his quirky ability and open heart, we then meet Paulo who is sceptical and deep down wants to believe. The story is really well written and we follow it easily. The storyline is brilliant with just a hint of paranormal mixed with mystery and a touch of suspense, the characters are wonderful holding your attention as they muddle through trying to find a missing child and the person that took them. There isn’t any relationship building, it’s more of a tentative feeling out and because they are both involved in some way with the case it isn’t until the very end that they can actually be physical but the feelings between them and the longing is there throughout the story.

Now the actual psychic aspect of the story is brilliant, being able to communicate in such a way with animals and the way it was portrayed was nicely done and damn, the way that Jaron was affected by the use of the abilities made sense. I loved seeing how it all came together, with Jaron finding the leads and then Paulo finding the concrete evidence to back it up, it slotted perfectly together. We do get a bit of turmoil for Jaron as Stephen has jealousy issues but it just adds to the story as Jaron tries to figure out what the next stage of his life will be. And that also seems to be what Paulo needs to figure out as well, the case that messed him up was bad and had me wanting to heave and cry but finding Matt might just put his head back on straight. Bear really needs a special mention because he was just a delight, I adore big dogs and Bear with his caring protective nature was something special.

I recommend this to those who love something a little different, who love psychics, tough cops, mystery, suspense, danger, brilliant characters, incredible animals and a wonderful ending.

  1. I would absolutely love to win a copy of this book. It sounds incredible. I love books with psychics. And in answer to the question, no I don’t believe in psychics, but there’s almost nothing better than a story about a psychic and a copy. Yum!! Great review too. 🙂
