“Be careful,” Jesse said as I turned around.

I gave him a thumbs-up and followed Rio. I moved the light in front of us, searching for anything that could jump out. The air was hot and sticky, giving the illusion that the darkness held breath. I could feel it on the back of my neck, a curl of moisture that sent a chill down my spine. The walls closed in, narrowing my vision to a small yellow beam.

The school had been raided already. Books and paper littered the floor. Classroom doors were thrown open, and chairs were left broken in the hall. Rio eased a janitor’s cart out of the way. She looked it over.

“Nothing.”
