Meredith Russell - Just Jack 600x900

 Just Jack

 by

Meredith Russell

When the line between fairy tales and magic, and the real world become blurred, can love really conquer anything?

Leo Marsh is having a bad day. He just caught his boyfriend cheating on him, and not for the first time, then he falls, quite literally, for a man who has to be too good to be true….

When Leo slips and falls on some ice in front of Jack, Jack sees something all too familiar in Leo’s eyes. For over fifty years, Jack has existed in a solitary life of ice and bitterness. Just like Leo, he was betrayed by a man he loved, and swore no one would ever break his heart again: he gave up on love, and it seemed love had given up on him.

But if by fate or magic, Jack and Leo find their paths crossing for a second time, and with a little guidance from friends, dare to take a chance on each other. The problem is, Jack isn’t the charming and uncomplicated guy Leo thinks he is. When Jack gave away his ability to love, he became something else, someone cold and unloving. He became Jack Frost.

As Jack and Leo get closer, Jack is left torn and confused. Jack yearns for anything that reminds him of his humanity, but the truth is, he feels nothing, not warmth, not love, and he knows he might never be able to love Leo the way he deserves to be loved.

Cramming his hands in his jacket pockets, Jack looked at the ground, and with the toe of his boot, he drew a circle in the snow. Adding eyes and a smile, Jack admired his masterpiece for a moment. It wasn’t quite right. He crouched and held his hand over the simple drawing. Slowly, he pulled back his hand. The soft flakes quivered. He teased the snow, rearranging the picture, then straightened up. The image’s smile was gone, replaced with a frown.

“Hello, Jack,” he said to the drawn face.

With a heavy sigh, he dragged his foot across the image, wiping the sidewalk clear. If only it was that easy to wipe away the morose feeling from inside him.

He rubbed a hand over his face and took a deep breath. There was a smile on his lips as he looked ahead at the elderly gentleman making his way toward him.

“Too cruel?” he asked himself.

Maybe. Jack smiled. Or maybe not. He wiggled his fingers and felt the cold air surge between them. This was who he was—the bringer of mishaps, ice, and mischief, and of the frost on the window panes.

He was Jack Frost.

Review: Leo has just caught his boyfriend cheating on him and then slips and falls as he makes his escape, one of people who offers him aid catches Leo’s eye but while his heart is hurting the last thing he needs is another man. Jack has lived a near solitary life for the past fifty years, it’s been a long time since he felt human emotion but something in Leo’s eye tugs at him. Jack doesn’t understand what makes Leo different from all the others before him and Leo isn’t sure if he can open his heart again so soon but both men realise that there is something special about the other man. But with Leo’s ex still hovering in the background will Leo be able to warm Jack’s frozen heart or will Jack give in to the frost that has bound him for fifty years?

This is a great paranormal story that has a new take on Jack Frost. Jack forsakes love after being betrayed and for the last fifty years has embraced the cold even if it has left him feeling lonely. Leo is left feeling betrayed when he catches his boyfriend cheating, it’s the last straw for their relationship as he can no longer take the lies and cheating. When Leo slips on some of Jack’s ice Jack comes to his aid which is out of character, but something in Leo’s eye draws Jack in. Meeting again later Leo and Jack take a chance but Jack is afraid his nature might hurt Leo, but Leo is encouraged to take a chance on Jack.

I really liked this story, the way that Meredith Russell has managed to recreate the Jack Frost folklore by giving him a human element of betrayed love which gives it a refreshing twist as love thaws the frost. We’ve all been there at some point, our heart breaks, we’ve been hurt and we just want the devastating pain and hurt to go away saying never again will we give our heart away but what if when we did that our heart froze and we embraced the cold becoming something of folklore… Jack Frost. So this is the story of a man who forsakes love completely, who embraces the cold until finally he meets someone who chips away at the loneliness and has Jack feeling warmth for the first time in fifty years.

When we see Leo’s circumstances you hope that he will stay strong and refuse to fall sway to the honeyed words of his ex, we also hope that he will keep his heart open to the kindness and attraction of Jack. With Jack we hope that he hasn’t given up on love completely even if it hasn’t touch him in many years, his friendship with Abe and his family gives us hope that he hasn’t completely shut off his emotions, he just has to open up a bit and take a chance. Leo and Jack make a sexy couple and their story warms your heart, it isn’t an instant love story but it does move quickly, they click, fitting together like two halves of a whole. So I really liked how this story progressed and yes there is a moment of angst as Leo’s ex tries to worm his way back into Leo’s life but it all works out well… although I did secretly wish that Jack would freeze Leo’s ex’s bits… he really deserves it LOL

I recommend this to those who love folklore figures finding love, men healing from broken hearts, love conquering the cold and a great ending for two men who deserve it.

  1. Absolutely love this cover. My favourite season is Spring. It’s not too hot and the gardens are just starting to burst into life.
